fiu enivi? to cooperate with the opened cover flaps in the formation of a wind screen during the dumping of the can contents. Obviously the can itself forms a very good wind screen on the fourth side of the opening which is protected on three sides by the two cover flaps and the partition 15.
Dividing the load carried by the vehicle into two compartments or bodies as above described, will often be convenient because it reduces the size and cost of the dumping machine. It also makes it possible to collect and keep separate two different kinds of refuse. On the other hand it adds to the cost of the vehicle and to the dead weight or tare of the latter, so that in some instances it will be preferable to provide only a single body for the vehicle. Even in such a construction I would provide the longitudinal septum or partition which would then be attached to the wagon body instead of to'the chassis. The covers would in like manner extend to this partition and all the wind screen and other advantages heretofore mentioned would be secured in like manner. Consequently, in the subjoined claims when speaking of the body of the wagon, I use the expression in a sense broad enough to include a body in which the two compartments are rigid with relation to each other as well as when they are inclependent, provided the context admits of such interpretation. Obviously in both constructions, the partition 15 prevents cross blasts of wind above the refuse in the wagon when the cover flaps are all down and thus preventsthe scattering of dust which otherwise might occur.
The can instead of having only a fixed half dome as in Fig. 4, may conveniently be rovided with a hinged hood 16 pivoted at 17 to the body 18 so that the fill and dump opening 19 may be closed. In this case the trunnion 20 would be mounted on the hood 16 eccentric to the pivot 17. When the can, resting on these trunnious 20 on the cross slides 9, is tilted up to empty its contents into the wagon, the hood 16 is automatically opened and permits the can contents to be discharged. In either can construction, the trunnions are mounted substantially in vertical alinement with the lifting handles 21 so that the can is. readily rested thereon when it is lifted to the slides 9.
Various modifications of details of construction will readily suggest. themselves which do not depart from what I claim as my invention.
I claim as my invention 1. A wagon body having a longitudinal partition, a series of transverse supporting members above the containing portion of the body, adapted to receive and support between adjacent members a dump can while the same is being emptied into the body of the wagon, and pivoted cover flaps carried by said transverse members and cooperating, when open, with said longitudinal partition to form a wind screen while the canis heing emptied into the wagon body.
2. In a refuse handling system, a wagon body having a longitudinal partition and transverse supporting members, together with cover flaps on said transverse members and extending halfway between adjacent members, said cover flaps cooperating, when open, with said partition to form a windscreen, substantially as described.
3. In a refuse handling system, a wagon body having a longitudinal partition and transverse supporting members, together with rods arranged at each of said transverse members and pairs of cover flaps pivoted on each of said rods, the flaps on each rod respectively extending partially across the spaces on opposite sides of said rod.
l. In a refuse handling system, a i'agom having a containing body and a series of transverse supporting members above the same, in combination with a dump can with swinging cover, said can having trunnions adapted to rest upon said transverse supporting members and means on said cover engaging said members to swing the cover open on the uptilting of the can to discharge its contents into the wagon body.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
