Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. f5, 1918 Application met rte-5'; 24, 1917. Serial Nb. mass f;
Toullwhom it may concern? v Be it known that I, Annrrn J. Ronixsos, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garibaldi, in the county of Tillam'ook, State of Oregon, have inventedla new and useful Auton'iatic Cut-Off for; lVater-Glasses; and I do hereby declare the following to be-a full, clear, and exact descriptioi' of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and usethesa'me'u r The present invention relates to an automatic check valve for the water gages of steam boilers, and has for its object to provide a device of this character which embodies novel features of construction whereby the escape of steam and hot water will be automatically checked in the event the gage glass becomes accidentally broken.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a device of this character which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in its construction, which does not interfere in any manner with the circulation of water within the gage glass, and which is thoroughly dependable in its action and will positively prevent the escape of live steam and hot water if the glass becomes broken, thereby avoiding the possibility of the engineer becoming scalded in his attempts to close the regular cocks.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel combinations and arrangements of the parts as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the novel features thereof being pointed out in the appended claim.
For a full understanding of the invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a conventional gage glass provided with an automatic check valve constructed inaccordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of one of the sections of the sectional supporting column for the check valves.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate one embodiment of the invention, the reference numeral 1 designates the side of a replacing the glass tube 2. The lower boiler cock is' shown as provided with a drain cock 7.
The end fitting?) of each of the boiler cocks 4 is provided with a valve seat 8 which is arranged at an inclination to the axis of the member and adapted to be engaged by an inwardly opening check valve 9. These check valves are preferably hinged at their edges, as indicated at 10, and arranged to be held in an open position by props 11, although as soon as these props are released the valves will be quickly closed by internal pressure, thereby preventing the escape of live steam and hot water. The outer ends of the prop members 11 bear loosely against the ends of a sectional column which is assembled within the glass tube 2 and supported in an operative position by engagement with the walls of the said tube.
This column is formed of a series of similar and interchangeable sections, each of which includes a short axial rod 12 and a series of positioning arms 13 which are inclined rearwardly from the ends of the rod. The two extremities of the axial rod 12 are beveled in opposite directions, as indicated at 1%, and when the several units of the column are assembled in position within the glass tube 2, the rearwardly inclined positioning arms 13 hold the rods 12 entirely within the tube with the oppositely beveled ends 12 of adjacent units abutting against each other. The props 11 of the two check valves engage opposite ends of the unstable column member assembled within the glass tube so that the two check valves are held in an open position as long as the glass tube remains intact. However, should the glass tube become accidentally broken, the positioning arms 13 will be unable to hold the column sections or units in position, and the oppositely inclined abutting ends of the rods 12 will slide over each other and cause a collapse of the column member. The props 11 will then lose their support so that the valves 9 are forced into a closed position by the pressure within the boiler. This autoboiler, and. 2 a conventional gage glass which matically prevents the escape of live steam and hot water, so that there is no danger of the engineer becoming scalded in closing the valves of the regular boiler-cocks 4.
Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p In an automatic check valve for water gages, the combination with an end fitting provided with a valve seat, and a gage glass connected to the end fitting, of an inwardly opening checkvalve for the valve seat, an unstable column member formed in separate and interchangeable sections which are assembled within the gage glass and normally held in operative position thereby, each of the sections including an axial rod having rearwardly inclined positioning armsprojecting from the ends thereof for engagement with the Walls of the glass tube to hold the axial rod centered therein, the abutting ends of the rods being beveled in opposite directions so that they will slip over each other and cause a collapse of the column member if the gage glass breaks and the positioning arms lose their support,,and a prop between one end of the column and the inwardly opening valve for holding the valve in an open mains intact. ,i
