To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWlN llloGirAw, a

.town of Milton, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented anew and useful Detachable Door Extension, of which the following is a full, clear, and comprehensive specification and exposition, the same being such as will enable others to makeand use the same with exactitude.

The object of my invention, broadly stated, is to provide a detachable door-entension particularly intended to be employed in connection with automobiles, or other vehicles, the same to be employed in connection with one or more of the doors thereof.

It is well known that when the side curtains of a vehicle are attached in place on van automobile that it.is extremely difficult for one to enter or attain exit from the vehicle without unfastening the curtain which is disposed across the doorway and above the door; therefore the particular ob ject of this invention is to obviate this trou' ble and consequentdelay, and at the same time permit a construction which will be neat and attractive in appearance, strong and durable in construction, and which can be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low price.

Other objects, in addition to those above mentioned, are to provide an extension for doors which will be easily attached in operative position, which is easily detachable when not required, adapted to be rolled into a small compass of space that it may be stowed away, or which may be folded down against the inside of the door when not re quired in operative position.

Other minor objects and particular ad vantages of the invention will suggest them.- selves in the course of the following descrip tion, andthat which is new will be correlated in the appended claim.

The preferred means for carrying out the principles of my invention in a practical manner is shown in the accompanying one sheet of drawings, in which-higure 1 is an outside elevation of my invention "in-{opera tive position in connection with a vehicle door. 1*" 2 is an inside view or? the same, but taken on an enlarged scale from that of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 shows a fragment of the frame, partly in section showing the means for detachably connecting the side-arms and the horizontal upper bar. Fig. 6 is a front elevation of a hinge for each of the side arms. Fig. 7 is the same as Fig. 6 but taken at right-angles thereto. And Fig. 8 shows the extension as folded down parallel with the inner face of the door.

In order that the construction, the opera tion, and the advantages of my invention may be more fully understood and appreciated, T will now take up a detailed description thereof, in which I will set forth the invention as briefly and as comprehensively as T may. y

Letter C denotes the vehicle top. Detachable side curtains D and E close the space between the body A and the top Q, except that directly above the door B.

The invention proper comprises the two it socket-

3 and 4, respectively. The said socket-clips are the only parts of the inven' tion which are permanently attached to vehicle, and even these are very easily re moved and as easily attached in place. l

The frame, shown in Fig. l, comprises the side arms 5 and 6, which are disposed vertically and parallel with each other, the lower portions of said arms being bent or offset inward and they then extend down-- ward forming the two

llllt formed integral, or they may be otherwiseconnected as desired. In some instances the arm 5 and the pintle 7 may be connected by a hinge 15; and in like manner the arm 6 and the pintle 8 may be connected by a hinge 16, or these parts may be made integral with each other as shown: in Fig. 2.

- If the hinges are employed they should be in or near the offsets 9 and 10.

Numeral 17 denotes a section of fabric, preferably doubled, forming the body or main portion of the extension, whose width is slightly more than the width of the door B, in order that it may lap over or under the side curtains D and E, and the length of said fabric extension is such as to extend down and lap out over the upper edge of the door B and to extend up inside of the lower edge of the to C. One or more transparencies 18 may e placed in the fabric 17 in order to provide light or a clear vision to one inside the vehicle.

The frame shown in Fig. 4 is located between the two thicknesses of the fabric of the extension, and it extends around the trans areney 18, and it is secured in place bystitching the two thicknesses of fabric together around and near to both sides of each member of the frame, except the

We will suppose, for instance, that the device be assembled and in operative position as in Figs. 1 and 2, it'is evident that the extension and the door will completely fill the door-opening, yet if the door be opened it'is evident that the extension will open therewith thereby providing an unobstructed full-length doorway for one to enter or to leave the interior of the vehicle.

if it be desired to provide ventilation without opening the door then one has only to turn the extension inward and downward to the position in which it is shown in Fig. 8, thereby opening the upper portion of the doorway without opening the door.

I desire that it be understood that various changes may be made in the several details of construction from that herein shown, and in the arrangement of the several parts, without departing from the spirit of the invention and without sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.

Having now fully shown and described the preferred means for carrying out the principles of my invention in a practical manner, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-

In combination with a vehicle having a door opening and a door adapted to close the lower portion of the door opening, an extension carried by the upper ortion of the door and comprising in com ination a section of fabric closing the door opening above said door and extending down outside the upper edge of the door and extending upward underneath the edge-of the vehicle top and adapted to be connected to the sides of the door opening, a frame formed of rods on which said fabric extension is mounted, there being pockets formed in the fabric for the members of the frame, the said frame comprising two vertical side-arms and a horizontal upper sect-ion, means for detach; ably securing the upper ends of the sidearms to the ends of said horizontal section,

socket clips secured to the inner face of the upper portion of the door into which the lower ends of said side-arms of the frame are adapted to be detachably inserted and retained therein by gravity, hinges located intermediate said side-arms for roviding means whereby the extension may e turned down inside the vehicle and parallel with the door, the said extension being adapted to be disassembled and rolled into a small compass of space when not in use, all substantially as shown and described.
