Be it known that we, ROBERT L. LYoNs, of WValtham, in the county of Middlesex, I-TAROLD V. Momns, of Roxbury, in the county of Suffolk, and CARL I. NIELSEN, of Arlington, in said county of Middlesex, all in the State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machines, of'wliich the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof: 9
This invention has reference to improvements in sewing machines and particularly to such machines as are adapted to attach by sewing stitches tags or other flat devices to a fabric. V
The object of theinvention is to so construct asewing machine, particularly a singlethread sewing machine, that a tag or other flat article may be attached to afabric by a group of stitches, that the relative movement of the work withrespect to the stitch forming devices may be arrested during the's'ewingof one or more tying stitches and that the sewing threadmay b'e strained to break saidthread.
Other objects of the invention are to facilitate the operation of the various parts of the machine as, for instance,the release and return of the lifter plate to its normal position.

In such operation the button has such stability that it is engaged by the arms of a button clamp and the lifting of the work to eflect the breaking of the thread is accomplished by the swinging upward of the arms of the button clamp. In carrying our present invention into practice the tagor flat article which is to be attached to the fabric has neither the shape nor the stability to be engaged by a lifting device adapted to apply sufiicient strain to effect the breaking of the sewing thread; The tag referred to herein is often of paper or of comparatively thin cloth and is therefore not adapt ed to resist any severe strain. e therefore find that it is desirable and often necessary to effect the straining of the thread by lifting the under fabric by means of a cloth plate against which said under fabric rests during the sewing operation. This preferred means of lifting the work to strain the thread usually requires the return of the'cloth plate to normal position, toreceive the work, beforethe presser foot is returned to its normalposition to bear on the work.

The automatic stopping of the machine is timed with relationjtothe formation of said tying stitch or stitches an d, preceding said stopping, -the rise *of said cam 26 acts on the slide rod'22 to raise said rod and to thereby move thread clamp member 21 against the action of its spring to the closed position whereby thread T is clamped or engaged between members 21 and 19 so that the forward movement of the thread is re sisted. 1
Connection 12 is now actuated or effected to rock or partiallv rotate shaft 10 and as a result of said partial rotation several operations occur, the sequence of which occurrence depends somewhat upon the relative positions and dimensions of the members carried by or actuated by the rotative movement of said shaft 40. Cam acts on pin 23 of rod 22 and effects the swinging of said pin on to the periphery of said cam 50 whereby said rod 22 is held in position to resist the opening movement of thread clamp member 21. Thread puller arm 43 is swung to draw thread through the tensions 16 and 17 or through one of said tensions if one only be used. Thread puller arm actuator 49 is moved vor swung outward to permit spring +17 to swing thread puller arm 44 to take up slack thread between the thread clamp (19, 21) and the tying stitch at the work. Arm 58 is swung to draw upward presser foot arm 34 by means of the connection 57. Arm 51 is swung to draw up rod 52 which acts, through its member 5 1 on the lifter arm 36 to effect the lifting of the cloth plate 31 whereby the work is lifted and a strain is put upon the thread T to break said thread, the break occurring at the tying stitch.
Before the upward movement of rod 52 is completed its cam 53 rides against cam 56 and cam 53 and its rod 52 is caused to swing outward whereby the member 54 of said rod 52 is disengaged from lifter rod 36 and said rod and its cloth plate 31 are caused to move downward under gravity or by the assistance of the spring of said rod 36. By thus returning cloth plate 31 to normal position said plate 31 is spaced from presser foot 33 so that work may readily be placed between these parts.
When connection 12 is permitted to move upward shaft 410 is retractively rocked 1 whereby thread puller arm 43 is swung backward out of the way of the thread. Actuator arm 19 actsto effect the backward swinging ofthread puller arm 1-1. Arm 58 in its movement permits the downward movement of presser foot arm 31, and arm 51 permits rod 52 to move downward until its member-5i rides against lifter ar-111 36 and thus become engaged beneath said arm 36as indicated in Fig. 3, thisengaging movement, laterally, of rod 52 and its member resulting from the action of spring I Nhen the 'machine is again started the rear portion of presser foot arm 3%, in making its first vibratory movement, strikes pin 2% of rod 22 and causes said pin to swing whereby rod 22 is partially rotated to bring its pin 22 into the position shown in Fig. 1 where said pin 23 may be received in the groove of cam 50 to permit the downward movement of said rod 22 and the opening movement of thread clamp member 21 under action of its spring.
It is not our intention hereby to limit our invention to the specific features of construction herein shown or to the relative operation of some of the parts but only as herein claimed.
Having thus described our invention we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A sewing machine comprising stitch forming means to form a group of stitches and a tying stitch and including a work holder for effecting relative movement between the work and the needle, said work holder having a presser foot and a cloth sustaining plate, means adapted to be operated to resist the movement of the thread, and means for operating said cloth plate to move the work and thus to break the thread.
2. A sewing machine comprising stitch forming means and a work holder cooperating to form a group of stitches and a tying stitch, said work holder having a cloth sustaining member mounted on said work holder and movable relative to such holder, means for moving said member, and means for resisting the feeding movement of the thread at times to break the thread.
3. A sewing machine comprising stitch forming means and a work holder cooperating to form a group of stitches and a tying stitch, said work holder having a member engaged beneath the work for moving the work, means for operating said member to lift the work, a thread clamp, means for taking up the slack thread between said clamp and the stitch forming means, and means for o )erating said thread clamp and take up whereby thread may be broken.
4. A sewing machine comprising a work holder having a presser foot and a cloth sustaining member mounted for independent movement, means for moving said presser mechanism for moving both said presser foot and sustaining member in one direction approximately simultaneously and for permit- 1 ting the return of the sustaining member to its normal, position lndependently of the presser foot.
6. A sewing machine comprising cooperating means for forming a group of stitches and a tying stitch and including a member movable independently of the presser foot in a direction to draw the thread, means 10- Gopies of this patent may be obtained for catcd-above the stitch forming devices for resisting the movement of-the thread, and meaiis for moving said member to strain and break the thread.
7. A sewing machine comprising a work holder having a presser foot and a work carrying member both pivotally mounted for relative upward movement, a lifter rod pivotally mounted on a member independent of said work holder and releasably engaged with said work carrying member, means for moving upward said'lifter rod, and means for moving upward said-presser foot.
