To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it kno-wn that I, ELIAS T. GoLnnnnG, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements` in rtrtificial Teeth; and I do declare fhe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in artificial teeth and has for its principal object to provide a metal backing and a replaceable porcelain facing which are interlocked at the lower or biting edge, and which may be assembled and firmly united by a cementitious substance without any relative sliding movements.
The invention further resides in the features of construction hereinafter specified and claimed, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawing wherein- Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation of a set of teeth in process of construction- F i0'. 2 is a section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1

Similar numerals of reference denote like parts in the several gures of the drawing.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a reinforcement of gold or other metal which is applied to the metal backings 2 that are assembled edge to edge, when a set of teeth are being constructed, each backing having a stud or key 8 extending from the front face thereof, The stud 3 is preferably formed with recesses in its sides and is adapted to be assembled within an opening 5 formed in the back of the tooth facing 6.
-Each backing 2 has a forwardly turned lip 7 on the lower edge, and the rear portion of the lower or biting edge of the tooth facing G is notched transversely to provide a transverse seat 8 for engagement with the lip 7. The porcelain facing thereby overhangs the lip and conceals the metal backing even to the biting edge without sacrificing the reinforcement afforded by the lip which latter partially forms and protects the biting edge.
The interlocking between the backing and facing is effected by first assembling them with the lip 7 in engagement with the scat 8, and then, having previously applied a cementitious substance a within the opening 5, simply pressing the backing and facing together, whereupon, when such substance hardens the parts will be firmly united.
In constructing a set of teeth the metal backings are assembled edge to edge and the gold or other reinforcement 1 is then applied tothe rear facings of the backings.
The openings 5 are then filled with a cementitious binder a and the lips 7 interlocked with the seats S. The studs are then simply pressed within the openings 5 thereby causing the cement to fill the rc. cesses il so that when it is ha rdenod the parts will be securely held together. The cement may also efficiently be applied on the contiguous or abutting faces of the backings and facings.
In Fig. 5 a molar tooth is depicted having a molar shaped facing 9 in the extension of which is formed a transverse notch or groove 10 to receive the edge of the metal backing 2, and in this instance the backing is simply first engaged with the notch 10 and then. after the opening has been filled with ce ment, the backing is pressed `into position with the stud 3 embedded within the cement l within the opening 5.
It will, of course, be obvious that, instead of forming the recesses for the cement within the stud S, these recesses may be formed within the opening` in the rear of the tooth facing, and I have therefore shown at Fig. G a construction in which the opening 5 in the rear of the tooth facing is formed with inwardly projecting fins 11, so that when a plain stud extending from the metal backing is assembled within the opening 5 between the fins 11 with a previous application of the cement, the latter will fill in the corner spaces 12 and thereby firmly bind the parts together.
I therefore do not wish to be limited. to any particular formation of the cement re cesses, nor is this invention limited to the location of these recesses whether in the facing stud or in the opening in the back of the facing.
I claim:
An artificial tooth, comprising a metal backing having projecting at right angles therefrom a rectangular stud and provided With a lip extending transversely across its loWer edge, and a porcelain facing having in its rear a rectangular opening corresponding in shape to the shape of the stud and having formed at a short distance above the lower edge a transverse seat to receive said lip, said stud and opening when assembled having therebetween rectangular recesses for receiving a cementitous substance.
