R. c. McCALEB. CENTRIFUG AL WASHING AND DRYING MACHINE. I
A PPLICATION FILED API. 3| I911- I Patented Jan. 15, 1918.
ROBERT C. MOCALEB, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
GENTRIFUGAL WASHING AND DRYING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 15, 1918.
Application filed April 3, 1917. Serial No. 159,456.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Roimu'r C. MCCALEB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Centrifugal Washing and Drying Machine, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a centrifugal washing and drying machine, and aims to provide a novel and improved appliance of that character for washing clothes and drying them, or for doing other similar work.
One of the objects of the invention is the provision of a device of that character, the tub and corresponding parts. of which can be tilted from horizontal to vertical position. I
Another object of the invention is the provision in a machine of the character specified, of means for dipping the water or cleaning fluid from the lower portion of the tub and raising it up and throwing it from the center outwardly into the rotatable basket by centrifugal force.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a novel driving gearing for the basket, whereby the basket can be rotated at a relatively high speed when in horizontal position, and at a relatively low speed when in a vertical osition.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description roceeds, the invention residesin the comination and arrangement of parts and 'in the details oI construction hereinafter de scribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein' disclosed, can be made within the scope of What is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accom panying drawing, wherein Figure 1 is avertical median sectionpf the machine, portions being shown in elevation. T
Fig. .2 is a fragmental elevation.
Fi 3 is another fragmental elevation showing the tub tilted to vertical position.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a tub 1 of any suitable'construction, havin the top 2 provided with the bin edsection or door 3 permitting access to t e interior of the tub. The bottom or side portion of the tub is trunnioned or pivoted to a pair of legs 4, whereby the tub can be swung to horizontal and vertical position. By the horizontal positionis meant that the tub has its bottom in a horizontal position, and when the tub is in its vertical position, the bottom thereof is vertical. A third leg 5 is attached to the tub to swing onto and rest against the floor when the tub is in horizontal position, and said leg 5 can be engaged b a catch 6 mounted upon the floor to hold the tub in horizontal position. When the catch 6 is released from the leg 5, the tub can be swung to vertical position against or adjacent to the legs 4, as seen in Fig. 3.
A hearing 7 is provided at the center of the bottom of the tub, and a shaft 8 is journaled through said bearing axially of the tub. A basket 9 having apertured walls has its bottom secured upon the shaft in any suitable manner, and the basket has a top or cover 10 provided with the hinged section or door 11 permitting the articles to be readily placed within and removed from the basket when the doors 3 and 11 are opened. Said doors can be held closed by any suit able latches or the like (not shown).
In order to dip and raise water within the tub, a plurality of rods 12 are slidable through the top 10 of the basket and are provided at theirlower ends with scoops or buckets 13, of suitable construction, movable downwardly through openings 14in the bottom of the basket to thebottom of the 'tub. A yoke 15 connects the upper ends of the rods 12 above the top of the basket and underneaththel top of the tub, and a stem 16 swiveled to the yoke 15 extends 'slidably upward through the top of the tub to be. conveniently ralsed and lowered by hand. When the stem 16 is lowered, this will lower the scoops or buckets 13 through the openings 14 so that they will, in whirling with the basket, scoop up the water or cleaning fluid, which is in the lower portion of the tub, lift it and throw it outward toward the side walls of the basket by centrifugal force .to pass through the clothes or other articles for washing them, the scoops or buckets being raised and lowered at suitable intervals, and rotating with the basket. 1
Vertical bars 17 are preferably secured to the interior of the side walls ofthe basket,
for agitating the water, and assisting in the cleaning caring embodies a worm electric motor 21 or other suitable driving means can'be used, and as illustrated, the same is carried by a bracket 22 having a bearing sleeve 23 mounted for rotation upon one leg 4. The upwardly projecting armature shaft 24 of the motor 21 has secured thereto a spur gear 25 to mesh with the spur gear 20 when the tub is in horizontal position and when the motor is swung to brin the gear 25 into mesh with the gear 20. worm 26 is carried by the shaft 24 to mesh with the worm Whee1 19. Thus, when the tub is tilted to vertical position, the motor 21 can be swung with the bracket 22 to bring the worm 26 into mesh with 'the worm wheel 19. Thus, the shaft 8 beingaotuated by-the worm 26 and the worm wheel-19, will cause thebasket tobe-rotated at a' slower velocity than whenthe basket is in horizontal p051 tion with the spur gears in mesh. The tub; and basket can be moved to either horizontal or vertical position, according to the circumstances and the work to be done,
- movable-through the bottom of the" basket thereby providing a convenient able arrangement.
Havin and desirhus described the invention, what is claime as new is 1. A centrifugal machine embodying a tub,-a-rotatable' basket therein, and means to the shaft 8 underneathfrom the lower portion of the tub into the basket.
' 3. A centrifugal machine embodying a tub, a rotatable basket therein havmg an opening in its bottom, a vertically movable member slidably enga in the basket and having a bucket movab e t rough said opening upwardly and downwardly, and means for raising. and lowering said member.
4. A centrifugal machine embodying a tub mounted for tilting movementta shaft carried b the tub, a basket carried by the shaft wit in the tub, a worm wheel and aspur gear carried by said shaft, and actuat ing means having a spur gear to mesh with the aforesaid spur gear when the tub is ii one position and having a worm to me h with the worm wheel when the tub is in another position.
.5. centrifugal machine embod ing a basket and shaft therefor mounted or tilting movement, actuating means, said shaft and actuating means having. ears adapted to meshin one position of the asket to provide 'a"certain'speedandadapted to mesh in another position of the bas'ket'to provide a different speed, and means for movably mounting the actuating means in order that it can be brought into connection with the shaft according to the position of the basket. In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my slgnature in the presence of two witnesses.
