IMPROVEMENT IN CUTTER-HEADS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,340, dated April 2, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that [,ARCHIBALD D. SHERAR, of Baltimore city, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Improxement in Gutter-Heads, of which the following is a specification:
Description of the Accompanying Drawing.
Figure 1 is an end view of a device embodying invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is an elevation, and Fig. 4a plan of the supporting plate or bracket. Fig. 5 is a lateral view showing that end of the cutter-head which is attached to the mandrel. Fig. 6 is a plan of the same.
My invention relates tothe cutter-heads employed in molding and planing machines; and consists in the attachment of a supporting plate or bracket to the head, for the purpose of strengthening the cutters and preventing them from breaking. I am not aware that in any former inventions for the intended purpose the cutters O O, are provided with any auxiliary device for strengthening the same, other than the plates 61 d and screw-bolts 0 o. It will be observed that the cutters project to a considerable distance from the head so that the leverage upon their edges, when at work, is very great, and is apt to wrench and break them off, especially in molding hard woods.
For the purpose, therefore, of supporting the cutters near their cutting-edges, I attach to the ends of the head a plate or bracket, f, or its equivalent, as shown in Fig. 4, the perimeter of which comes nearly out to the edges of the knives. Segmental raised flanges E E are ca st or formed on opposite edges of this bracket, which abut against the sides of the cutter, as shown at g g, and prevent them from yielding or breaking. To prevent any tendency in the bracket or support f to rotate on the cutterhead, I support the same by means of stout pins or projections m m, which bear against the side of the head, as shown in Fig. 5, and efl'ectually prevent any movement independent of the head.
