To all whom it may concern.'

Be it known that We, RoBERT B. PUGKETT and HARRY R. ABBOTT, citizens of the United States, residing in the city of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful'lmprovements in Heels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to heels, and has for its object to provide a heel of a peculiar and novel construction adapted especially for use in connection with an outer sole having a part of its heel-seat portion cut out as il ustrated and described in companion application filed of even date herewith. i-Vith the above object in view, the invention comprises a heel having a tenonor filling-piece, of smaller dimensions than tlie body of the heel and adapt-ed to be received into an open ing made in the heel-seat portion of the outer sole.

Our invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in Which- Figure 1 is a perspective view ofour improved heel;

Fig. 2 is a plan view of an outer sole adapted to be used in connection with said heel; and i Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through the outer sole and heel in their assembled relation.

Referring now to the drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a heel of the ordinary construction and 2 a tenon, or filling, secured on the upper side thereof, as by nailing. The tenon or filling 2 has the shape of an ordinaryllift, and for the sake of economy may be cut from ordinary leather-board, or it may be in the form of a pieced lift, or it may be made from wood` cork. paste, or anv other suitable and durable cheap material. The outersole 3 is provided in its heel-seat portion 4 with anopening 5, which opening has the configuration of a lift but is somewhat larger in dimensions than the filling or tenon 2. This opening, as described in our companion application referred to, is made bv cutting a lift from the heel-seat portion .of the outer sole. An edge portion surrounds the opening 5, and a corresponding odge portion 7 is provided on the top of the heel b'v the filling or tenon 2. These corresponding edge portions are oi ample width to permit the necessary securing of the heel-seat ortion of the outer sole to the upper, and o the heel to the heel-seat portion of the outer sole. It is desirable that the opening 5 should be larger than the filling or tenon 2 to permit of the necessary adjustment of the heel to the correct position on the shoe, in the event that the opening in the outer sole should not correspond exactly with the relative position of the filling or tenon 2 on the top of the heel. In other Words, by making the opening 5 lar er than the tenon or filling 2 the necessity or absolute accuracy in positioning said open ing on the one hand, or said tenon, or filling, on the other, is obviated.

lVhile we have referred specifically herein to the use of our invention in connection with a leather heel, We Wish it to bej distinctly understood that the invention is equally applicable for use with heels made of material other than leather.

We claim:

1. An unattached heel formed in part of leather, and having a tenon in the form of a lift projecting above its upper side, and forming a unitary part of the heel, said tenon being of less dimensions than the body of the heel, and of cheaper material that the leather portion thereof.

2. An unattached heel constructedl in part of leather,l and having a tenon in the form of a lift projecting from its upper side and forming a unitary part of the heel, said tenon being of less dimensions than the bodyr of the heel, and being inferior in value to a whole leather lift of the same dimensions.

3.111 combination with an outer sole of leather having a section ofthe shape and dimensions of a heel lift cut from its heel seat portion, and a heel secured thereto, having a tenon in the form of a heel lift mounted on its upper side and forming a unitary art of the heel in its unattached state, sai tenon substantially filling the space in the outer sole made by the removal of the said lift section therefrom.
