To all whom it may concern Be. it known that I, Sauver. C. Mclrows, a citizen ot' the United States, residing` at Newark, in the county of -Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes for Electrical Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to brushes for use in ieuition dvnamos and the like and particu arly to the type of brush used in high tension distributers.
It has for itsv objects the productiou'of a brash in which the arcing or burnin is reduced to a minimum, a'brush in whici a wcaring'snrface is provided of durable material, and a brush that will notform u couducting streak on the insulating'snrfaco of the distributer.
.t further object of the invention is to provide a brush formed partly of conduct tug material and partly of non-conducting inaltcrial, constructed in the manner specil0( Ancillary objects of the invention will hereafter appear.
ln the aceommnyiug drawings, Figures l, 2. 3 and 4, s mw brushes constructed .in :ucordalwe with my invention, these brushes being shown in cross-section.
ltig. 5, is a diagram partly in cross-section. showing how my improved brush may he. applied to a distribater. in one of the well known types of ignition dynamos commonly teiuued magnetos. Like figures of reference denote the same parts wherever they are shown.
'lhe numeral 1,-denotes a'n outer casin for the brush, whichmay be either rount or square cr r-1s-seetioned. This material may be fiber or the like and should possess durable wearing qualities.
' lositioned in this material either by being inserted in a suitable aperture therein, or by being molded therein during the process of umnufacture. is thc metallic conductor y comprising the stem 2, suitably attached to or formed integral with the shouldered head tl. Attachedto this head in any suitable. manner. is the spring. udapttnl to press the entire brush structure outwardly when the same is supportcdn the movable distributer iu a magneto;
lu l-`ig. l, the conductor 2 is shown tlush i Bpeoleatton of Letter: Intent. Patented Jan. 15, 1918. Application and oetober 1s, uns. sum no. 126,249. i
at the end 6 of the brush and is thereforeI i adapted, during the rotation of said brush, to makecontact with the metallic distributer terminals, i', 8. 9 and 10, embedded in the insulating wall 1l of the distribu'te'r; and it will be evident, that during the rotation of the brush structure the surfaces l2 and '13 of the fiber surround and protectthe conductor 2. and also serve to preventany urcing that might occur between the conductor! and the distributorterminals, from `will readily jump this .gap and it will be wen-that tu this construction the metallic portion of the brush is not in contact with the inner facc'of the distributor, but that owing to the lar e wearing surfaces 12 and lil of the hrush,t ie distance of the gap from Fig. 2, to the end of the brush structure is accurately maintained.
Fig. 3. shows a modification in which au ordinary carbon brush is connected to themember 3, .while at Fig. 4, is shown a licxible conductor 16, which may serve to connect to a high tension terminal in any. suitable manner as shown in the drawing, thcreby 'eliminating the necessity of the spring -t carrying the current, which is otherwise the. ease.
While I havo shown and described my. invention as'appled to a high tension distributor as used with ignition dyuamos, it will bo understoml that the, invention may be employed in any suitable type of dynanr or motor or other electrical devices. to which it. in united, and l do not wish to conliuc myelf to the precise'construction or arrangeluent herein dist* eed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. A bruslrcomprising a tube. of insulating material, a metallic conductor within seid tube, and a sbonlderodfen-ale about vsaid tube and forming therewith a. structure having outside walls of uniform dimension from end to end, substantially as described. 2. A brush comp'rising a tube of insulating material a metallic conductor within said tubo, a flexible conductor 'oined to said first-conductor, and a shoul ered ferrule about said tube and formin therewith a structure having outside wal s of uniform dimension from end to end, substantially as Idescribed.
3. A brush comprising a tube of insulatin material, a metallic conductor within said tube, a shouldered ferrule about said tube and forming therewith a structure having outside walls of uniform dimension from end to end, and a spring secured to said ferrule and serving to conduct current to said first conductor. l
4. A brush com rising a shouldered?? drical tube of insu ating material, mee' ing core embedded in said tube, a ferrule about said tube and forming with the shoulder thereon a smooth outer surface, and a connection between said core and ferrulc.
5..A brush comprising a cylindrical tube of insulatin material having .a shoulder at one end of esser diameter than the body of the cylinder, a ferrule about said shouldered portion whereby the same is made of equal diameter to the rest of the body of said cylinder, a conductor embedded within sa'ul cylinder and electrically connected to said ferrule and means for conducting current to said ferrule. l
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
