THOMAS N. HOWELL, OF CIBGLEVILLE, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN BURGLAR-ALARMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,296, dated April 2, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS N. HOWELL, of Oircleville, in the county of Pickaway and in the Stateof Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burglar-Alarm; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, ref erence being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in a new arrangement of devices for automatically exploding a percussion-wafer, thereby lightin g a lamp and making an alarm at any desired time; and is also capable of being used as a burglar-alarm, as will be hereinafter fully described.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of my device.
A. represents a block or bed upon which my entire device is placed. B represents a lamp of tubular form, laid horizontally upon and attached to the block A. At the left end of this lamp is a tube, a, which is intended for the insertion of the wick. At the other end of the lamp is a tube, I), through which the oil is introduced into the lamp. 0 is a standard on the block A immediately back of the lamp B, to which standard, on the front side above passage of the fire from the percussion-wafer to light the lamp. Attached to the wick-tube a is a match-holder, h, in which a match is to be inserted, the head of said match being thus interposed between the wick and the opening in the stop a, so that the explosion of the percussion-wafer will light the match and the fire from the match will light the lamp. The
, use of the match is, however, entirely optional with the operator, as by using gasoline in the lamp the explosion of the percussion-Wafer will ignite the wick without the aid of the match. When the bolt D is drawn back it is held by a spring-trigger, t, which is held in position by a stud or lever, 70, attached to the block or bed A. The drawing back of the bolt D causes its outer end to bear against a rod, m, projecting from the stem or rod of the bell-hammer G, which is operated by a clockwork, H, to strike the bell I, said clock-work and bell being attached in any suitable manner to the bed of the machine.
The operation of my machine is as follows: The lamp being properly prepared, the wafer being placed against the stop, and a match being placed in the holder h, if desired, the bolt D is drawn out and held in that position by means of the trigger 'i and stud k. If it is desired to arouse a person at a given time the stud k, which holds the bolt, is connected by suitable means to the power of an ordinary clock, which must be set at the desired time. At the time the stud drops from the trigger the wafer is exploded, the lamp lit, and the alarm-bell started, by which means a general disturbance is caused and the sleeper aroused. If it is desired to use it as a burglar-alarm, cords are attached to the stud 7c and carried across the windows and doors in such a manner that when they are. opened the cord will be stretched, the stud slipped out, and the alarm thus given.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the spring-bolt D, trigger i working in the recess of the boltcase, and perpendicular spring-stud k, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. The combination of the lamp B, spring bolt-D, clock-work H, hammer G, and bell I, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that 'I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 5th day of February, 1872.
THOMAS N. HOWELL. I. U. FINKEL, WM. BOWMAN.
