Application filed February 25, 191?. Serial No. lLgSZ.
To (l ,whom t may concern:
Be it known that Bement S. McConnnnr., a citizen of the United States, residing Lakewood, in the county olf Cuyahoga Aand .State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Expansiondoints, oi' which the following is a ull, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates generally to the formation of oints between blocks of material such as are used in the production oi' roofs, buildings, porches, etc. ln the construction of articles' ofthe character referred to, it has been necessary to provide expansion joint' lnetween ind1- viclual blocks and sections as well as between the lateral edges of street navin anoL the curbs, and these joints have been 'lied with adhesive plastic ,material lt has; been found impracticable, however, to maintain an unbroken adhesive iller for such joints, espeeialy where the joints are widened, as by the contraction of the blocks or the sections ci material between which such joints are provided; also, in the case of block pavement, to maintain all the blocks in close contact and in alinement with a curb under the conditions specified. lt is the general purpose and object of my invention to pro tide for jointsof the character referred to a filling which will automatically accommo date itself to changes of width in such joints under the conditions referred to above, which will at all times maintain an adhesive Contact with the sides of the joint and remain in an intact or unbroken condition, and which will secure the contact and alinenient referred to hereinbetore. l accomplish this object in and through the embodiments of my 'invention illustrated in the drawings forming part hereof, wherein. my joint filler is shown as employed between the blocksl of pavements and between ment and a curb. in said drawinzs, l l
t' f plan view of a section ol pavement, the curb being shown in section and the. joints being provided with a filler embodying one l form of my invention; Fig. represents a sectional view corresponding to the line 'QL-2 of Fig. l; Fig'. 3 a view similar to Fig. l showing a modification ot a joint filling construction illustrated in l? 'l and 2; Fig. l a sectional view corresponding to the line 4:4. of Fig. 3; Fig. 5` an enlarged sectional view taken through one of the 'adhesive' bond between the opposite thereof. This composition may also be o joints between two of the individual blocks shown lin Figs. l and 2; and Fig. 6 a perspective view of the form olspringP ernployed in lligs. 3 and Ll in the production ol my joint filler. l
Describing by reference characters the various parts illustrated, herein, l denotes the curb and 2 a section of pavement, the i pavement beine' composed of a plurality ot individual bloczlis 3, which may be of any desired material;- 't suitable intervals, joints Lll are provided between individual blocks while a wider joint 5 is provided between a lateral side of the pavement and the adjacent side of the curb l. in each of the joints 4. and 5, l insert a plastic composition, indicated generally at G and (3, said composv in preferablyv containing asj'. haltuni, the pur pose being to provide an adhesive lilf r ex tendingr across such joints and providing ln ed as an adhesive bond between the blocks il and the concreto or other foeindation .7. 'llio coniposition, by reason of the asphalmn constituent, is plastic and yielding, as well as adhesiwa. llowever, should the joints be widened, as by the contraction oi' the illecite, or oli' the pavement awhole, due to teinperature or other natural changes, the joint lilli'ng material is liable to break, l'iccaose ol its inability to Flow with sullicientrapidity, and thus to destroy the continuity ol' the filler and the adhesive bond between the op posite sides of the joint. Furthermore, the
blocks will not remain in operative Contact and the alineinent between the blocks and thecurb or between adjacent edges of blockpavingl sections will be destroyed. The breaking of the filler will also result in allowing dirt and' other foreign material to enter the joint and will destroy the eilcclivc ness of the filler. Yln order to overcome lin: objectif noted, in tie/form of my inYM lion shown in Fir" l z and 5 l on' the filling comj'iosition a helical spring a suliicient number ol end to end to provide in eiieot a coi'ilii'nious spring. This sprin; r indicated at t5; and, in applying the saine lo n joint, it will be elongated eoniffwliat so that it will normally be held under comp ssion between the sides of the joint. Then, in the case oi' the widening' olf the joint, the spring will initiirally tend to expand transversely an(l maintain its Contact wit?y il "les thereof. Dun
helical springs placed ing this expansion, it causes the filler com.
permitted. by. Ai'esson of the plasticity of the'V compound and the yielding` of 'the springs under transverse pressure.
As shown. in Figs. 2 and 5, 'i accomplish the same result with reference to the nerrower joints 4 between the adjacent sides of the individual blocks, the springs S being of s diameter to enable them to be applied to the joints 'l and to be embedded in the materisl 6a therein, Where it will normally be held. under lateral compression, as is the,
cese with the spring or springsB.
.ln Figs. 3, 4t and 6, 'there 1s shown s. mogliicetion of my invention, wherein, instead' of employing helical springs, l may employe fist-pletespring i), E?, the plete being reyersely bent'whercby the opljJositely,` projecting convex portions 10,10' will engage the opposite sides of the joint. is is the case with the embodiment of my invention shown in Figs. l, 2 `enti 5,- the springs 9 sind 9 Will be applied'. to their ioints under lateral compression, as elongation prior to or in ywnnection with their 'insertion Within their respectivejoints. The action of the@ springs" in connection with the filling-.mste'riel .5 will be substantially the some as the action. of the springs 8 and 8a.
in applying the joint fillers in accordance with the embodiments of my invention cliscloscei herein, the spring or springs will first be inserte'ci .into e joint :incl the plastic I signature.
nettoie ineteriel will be poured inte the ioint v`iii the usuel manner. However, xio not thereby propose to exclude from the scope oi' ninvention a construction wherein the joint filler. mit, be formed seperately from the joint an 'inserted in its entirety therewithin.` Y i Having thus described my invention, what 1 A iller for joints of the character de scribed comprising a. body lof plastic mete pleistic `:use teriel whereby seidplestic body is caused to `contract and expend 'with the I contraction end ex ansion ofssid s rino. l
:2, A iller for s joint of the 'character clescribed comprising elastic material inserted between the opposite sides oi' s joint, solid material lis-ving' embedded tlierewithin s spring extendingl from side `to side of such joint and normally held under lateral coinpresson between such sides.
3. A filler for a joint of the character described comprising plastic materiel inserted within such joint, seid materiel having embedded therewithine s ring and saici spring havin s portions exten ing in opposite sitections groin thelongitudinsl central portion of the joint and beerinw ageinsttiie opposite sides of such joint auf being normally held under lateral compression Abetween the sides of siichjoint,
Ll. A filler for s joint of theciisrectcr Cie- 1 rial end e spring embedde in said body oi i scribed comprising adhesive olsstic meterial inserted in such joint V beded therein s helical spring, the axis of ssifl spring extending longitucliiislly of the joint and the seid spring beinp normally i i y and beheld. under letersl compression tween the opposed scales of the joint.
in testimony Whereoi, l hereunto sx my I BERTRAM S. MCCONNJLQ.
