Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. HLQfi, dated March 13, 1855.
- necticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Breech-Loading Fire-Arms, which, to distinguish from another invention of mine of a similar character, I will call No.
1; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure lis alongitudinal section of a breechloading pistol constructed according to my invention; and Fig. 2, a section of the breech, showing a modification of the invention.
This invention relates to all fire-arms to which either the sliding or rising-and-falling breech is applied.
It consists in so connecting the hammer with the breech that the chamber may be opened to receive the charge by the act of cocking the hammer, and closed by the falling movement of the hammer when the latter is set free to explode the charge.
In Fig. 1 A represents a sliding breech working on a center or pivot, a. B is the ham mer; C, the tumbler; D, the mainspring, and E the trigger, all of which are applied in a manner substantially similar to that in which they are applied in some other fire-arms. The breech is connected in rear of its pivot a, by means of a stirrup or link, I), with the front part of the tumbler in such a manner that the drawing back of the hammer to cook it throws the breech downward far enough to expose the whole of the rear of the chamber, as shown in black outline, and the falling of the hammer raises the breech far enough to close the rear of the chamber, as shown in red outline. The charge, in the form of a cartridge, is inserted after cocking the piece, and when the trigger is drawn the hammer falls and the breech rises simultaneously.
In Fig. 2, instead of a stirrup, a pair of toothed segments, 0 e, are represented for connecting the breech A with the hammer and tumbler, the former segment being attached to the breech and the latter to the hammer and tumbler. These segments may be secured to the pivots a of the breech and g of the hammer and tumbler, outsidethe stock, or may form portions of the breech-piece and tumbler.
This invention is applicable either to the sliding breech or to the risingand-falling breech-piece which has the chamber within it, and in either case makes a very simple fire-arm and one easily handled and capable of repeating with great rapidity.
The vent, when the sliding breech is used, may be either in the breech, as shown, or in the barrel.
