To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENooH OHNSTRAND, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Extension Spring- Roller, of which the following is a specification.

has for its object the prospring roller for etc, which is particularly simple in construction, economical in manufacture, and highly efficient and durable in use; and the invention consists in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention reference is had to the accompanying drawing in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view, partly broken away, of a spring roller embodying one form of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view, partly in elevation, on line A-A, Fig. 1.
This extension spring roller comprises, generally, sections having tubular telescoping portions, the inner portion being formed with a lengthwise slot, and clamping means comprising a member arranged within the inner tubular portion, and a part arranged substantially within the periphery of the outer tubular portion and extending through the slot and coacting with said member.
1 and 2 are the sections of the roller, the section 1 having a tubular end portion 3, with which telescopes the tubular end portion 4 of the section 2. Usually the sections 1 and 2 are entirely tubular and formed of sheet metal rolled into the desired form; and the tubular portion 3 of the section 1 is integral with the major part of the section 1, and the portion 4 of the section 2 is of less diameter than the major part of the section 2 and extends into, and is secured to, such major part. In so far as my present invention is concerned only the telescoping portions 3, 4 may be formed tubu- In the illustrated embodiment ofmy invention the tubular portion 3 of the section 1 is formed with a peripheral depression 5 sides of the'slot and the and a perforation 6 at the bottom of the depression, the depression 5 forming an in wardly extending boss on the interior of the portion 3; and the tubular portion 4 of the section 2 is formed with a lengthwise slot 7, which receives the boss formed by the depression 5, and the margins 8 on opposite boss are turned inwardly to conform to said boss and to form a depressed slot. Usually the boss and depression 5 are conical, and the margins 8 incline or converge inwardly.
The means for clamping the telescoping tubular portions 3 and 4 of the sections 1 and 2 together in any position of endwise adjustment of said sections comprises a member, as a nut 9, arranged within the portion 4, and a screw 10 extending through the perforation 6, and the slot 7 and threading into the nut 9. The nut 9 preferably conforms to the contour of the contiguous parts of the inner face of the tubular portion 4 and is formed with a groove for receiving and fitting the margins 8 on the opposite sides of the slot of the portion 4, the lengthwise edges of the groove fitting the inner faces of the portion 4 at the bases of said margins. Usually said nut is formed of sheet metal and is arcuate in general outline in'cross section, as shown in Fig. 2, and is formed with a central lengthwise corrugation 11 which forms the groove for receiving the margins 8 and thus forms substantially inclined upper faces for engaging the inner or lower faces of said margins, the corrugation 11 having a threaded opening in its bottom which is alined with the perforation 6 and slot 7. The faces of the arcuate portions on opposite sides or edges of the corrugation conform to and bear radially against the inner faces of the portion 4 at opposite sides of the slot 7 The screw 10 is preferably formed with a head 12 which fits the depression 5 and is thus supported radially within the slot 7, the outer end of said head being substantially coincident with the periphery of the tubular portion 3 so that a curtain or other article may be wound upon such periphery.
The sections 1 and 2 are provided respectively with axles 13, 14 connected thereto in any suitable manner, the axle 13 which is designed to be held stationary when the roller is in position, being connected to one end of a spring 15 located within the section 1 and anchored at its other end to a plug 16 fixed within the section 1. lhe axle 14L rotates with the section 2 and is fixed thereto in any suitable manner. The sections 1 and 2 are also formed with lengthwise channels 17 for receiving the edge of the curtain or any other means of attachment of a cur tain or window, the channel having a contracted mouth 18 which is clampedinto such means of attachment; and the tubular portion 4; is formed with a lengthwise corrugation 19 conforming to the walls of the channel 17. The formation of the channels 17 and 19,- forms no part of this invention and further description is deemed unnecessary.
'In operation the screw 10 is passed through the perforation 6 and threaded into the nut 9. The portion 1- is then the portion 3 of the section 1 with its slot alined with the boss formed by the depression 5. The section 2 is then moved endwise until the roller is of the desired length, whereupon the screw is turned'to tighten the nut 9 thereon, and clamp the portions 8, 4 together,
What I claim is;
1. An extension spring roller comprising sections having tubular telescoping portions,

2. An extension roller comprising sections having tubular telescoping portions, the inner section being formed with a lengthwise slot and the margins ofthe inner section on opposite sides of the slot being turned inwardly, and the outer tubular portion being formed with a perforation alined with the slot, and clamping means including a member arranged within the inner tubular section and a part extending through the perpart having a conical head the sides of which are opposed to said margins, substantially as and for the purpose specified. An extension roller comprising sections having-tubular telescoping portions, the inner section being formed with a lengthwise slot and the margins of the inner section on opposite sides of the slot converging inwardly and the outer section being formed with a depression extending into the slot and engaging the. converging margins, the depression having a perforation in its bottom, and'clamping means including a member within the inner tubular section and bearing against. the-inner face thereof, and a member extending through the slot and through the perforation, the'latter member having a head fitting the depression, sub.- stantially as andifor the purpose set forth.
5. Anextension spring roller comprising sections having tubular telescoping portions, the outer tubular portion being a peripheral depression and a perforation at the bottom of the depression, the depression forming a boss on the interior. of the outer tubular portion, and the inner tubular portion being formed with alengthwise slot and havingits margins on opposite sides of the slot turned inwardlyto conform to said boss, a nut arranged within the tubular portion and formed with a groove for receiving the inturned margins of the inner tubular portion,s aid nut substantially fitting the inner face of the inner tubular portion, and a screw perforation, and the slot, and threading into said nut, the screw having its head bearing on the upper face of the boss, substantially as and for the purpose described.
6. An extension spring roller comprising sections having tubulartelescoping portions, the outer tubular portion being formed-with a peripheral depression and a perforation at the bottom of the depression, the depression forming a'boss on the interior of the outer tubular portion, and. the inner tubular portion being formed with a lengthwise slot and having its margins on opposite sides of the slot turned inwardly to .conform to said boss, and clamping means including a member arrangedwithin the inner tubular portion and being arcuate in general outline in cross-section for. conforming to,
