SHIFTABLE CAR-SEAT.
Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Jan. 8, 1918.
Application filed September 2, 1914, Serial No. 859,734. Renewed June 2, 1917. Serial No. 172,525.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, SHERIDAN A. \VALKER, of Elmhurst, in the county of Queens, and in the State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shiftable Car-Seats, and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates particularly to car seats designed for vehicles, but it is especlally adapted for application to car seats used on railway carriages.
The object of my invention is to provide a car seat in which the back and the seat, as well as the foot rest, may be shifted from one side to the other, so that the seats may be reversed according to the direction of movement of the ear and according to the wishes of the passengers.
Another object of my invention is to provide a seat of this character in which the lost motion in elevating the back in the shifting operation is reduced to a minimum so as to avoid unnecessary work in elevating the back in the shifting operation, and so as to avoid damage to the parts which may occur where the seat is elevated to a considerable degree and therefore has to fall a considerable distance in the last portion of the shifting movement.
An object of my invention is therefore to provide a shifting mechanism for car seats in which the back need be elevated only to a sufficient extent to insure that the back and the other movable portions of the car seat will be retained in their shifted positions when shifted.
Another object of my invention is to provide a car seat in which the shifting mechanism is inclosed in a casing of an advantageous character, said casing being so constructed as to effectually brace the seat, notwithstanding the light weight of the parts of the casing.
Another object of my invention is to support the arm rest of the seat in an advantageous manner so that the same will not be broken oii' the end of the seat nor doflected from its proper position by the application of heavy weights as, for example, when persons are sitting thereon.
While my invention is capable of embodiment in many difl'erent forms, for the purpose of illustration I have shown only one form thereof in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the seat made in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section showing the outer plate and inner plate at the end of the car seat; and
Fig. 3 is a horizontal section through the same.
In the drawings I have shown a back 1 which is supported upon two arms 2 having widened lower ends 3. Each of the arms 2 at its lower end is connected at the two sides thereof with levers 4 by means of journals 5. Each of the levers 4 has an enlarged lower end 6 at the corners of which there are provided a pair of recesses 7. The recesses 7 cooperate with pins 8 to support the back 1 in place. The pins 8 are situated between an inner plate 9 and an outer plate 10 which have holes to receive the same, said pins 8 having their ends headed to hold the pins in place. It will be noted that there are three of the pins 8 located at each end of the car seat, one of said three pins being located in the center of the car seat while the other two pins 8 are spaced an equal distance therefrom. It will also be noted that inasmuch as the central pin 8 is designed to cooperate with both ofthe levers 4 at a particular end of the car seat, one of these levers 4 at each end of the car seat is provided with an offset portion 8 in order not tocontact with the adjacent end of the other lever 4. Each of the levers 4 has at about the center of its lower end a circular boss 11 to which is riveted a rod 12. The rods 12 extend from one end of the car seat to the other so as to connect the corresponding levers 4 at the two ends of the seat together. Furthermore, each of these rods 12 is adapted to move, together with its corresponding boss 11, in a guiding slot 13 located in the inner plate 9 at each end of the car seat. These rods 12, by connecting the corresponding levers 4 together, give a uniform shifting movement to the two ends of the car seat so that the car seat may be shifted without any twisting movement. On the inner face of the inner plate 9 I provide apair of circular sockets 11 attached to the plate by means of rivets 15 for receiving cross rods 16. These cross rods 16 support theear seat from ail'vedestal 17,'which may be iloc at edatg. one end of the car seat, while yol'zesor'stra'ps" 18 pass from the pedestals 17 around the cross rods 16 to hold thesame in place, the yokes 18 being held in position 'byibolts 19 passing through the same and through the.
pedestals 17. At each end of the 'c'arseat,
connecting the rods 12, there is a carriage 20 havlng 1n the center thereof a p1vo't'21" for connecting thereto, at each end ofthe car. seat, a foot rest lever 22. The carnage 20 at each endof thecar seat has slots 20 :to.r.e+ ceivethe. rods 12, The twohfoot rest levers 22 are connected together by a foot rest 23.'

the extreme ends ofthelevers 22 there are. pins. 27 which cooperate with yokes28jto. secure to the, upper side thereof rockers.29-,
