To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FRANK E. SWISHER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ho-opeston, county of Vermilion and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corn-Huskers, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in corn huskers and has for its object the provision of an improved device of this character by means of which corn may be husked with great rapidity.

The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing, forming .a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a corn husker embodying my invention shown in position of use on the arm of a user, said arm being indicated in clotted-lines, and

Fig. 2 is a detail view illustrating the cooperation of the husker with the hand of the user, the hand being indicated in dotted lines.

The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawing comprises a threaded stem 3 having two securing members or blocks 4 threaded thereon, each of said securing members carrying a securing strap 5 adapted to encircle the upper arm of the user to secure the same to the outer side thereof. The lower end 6 of stem 5 is arranged to project well beyond the elbow of the user and a hook member 7 is pivotally connected with said projecting end 6, said hook member being also arranged to slide through a guide member 8 secured to the wrist of the user adjacent the hand by means of a securing strap 9. A hook 10 is pivotally connected to the lower end of book member 7 within the guide 8 by means of a pivot pin 11 and the point 12 of the hook is arranged to project toward the palm of the hand of the user. A leaf spring 13 is secured to the hook member 7 and the shank of hook 10 across the pivotal joint so as to permit yield ing of said hook away from the palm of the hand of the user when the parts are in the relation shown in Fig. 2, the outer edge 8' of the guide 8 being beveled for this purpose as indicated.

In use the device is secured to the outer side of the left arm of the user by means of Specification of Letters Patent.

the straps 5, said straps being adjusted on stem 3 to cause the end 6 to project well beyond the elbow of the arm, the arm being indicated at 14: in dotted lines in Fig. 1. The guide 8 is secured to the wrist of the user with the hook member 7 sliding freely th'erethrough and the hook point 12 projecting toward the palm of the left hand of the user, the hand being indicated by dotted lines 15 in Fig. 2. To husk an ear of corn the ear, on the stalk, is engaged between the palm of the hand and hook 12, the yielding of said hook member facilitating such engagement, and such being effected while extending the arm at full length. Upon withdrawal of the hand and bending of the arm at the elbow the hook 12 will be retracted relative to the hand and, engaging the husk of the car, will greatly facilitate the tearing of substantially one-half of the husk from the ear whereupon the car may be readily broken from its stem and the remainder of the husk, in this manner experience has shown that corn may be husked with great rapidity. The retraction of the hook is due to the fact that the lower end of stem 3 projects well beyond the elbow of the user so that when the elbow is bent the pivotal connection with hook member 7 stands well out from the forearm, thus compelling the retraction of the hook member with reference to the palm of the hand.

\Vhile I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into efiect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. A corn husker comprising a hook member; means for securing said hook member to the arm of a user thereof with said hook projecting toward the palm of the hand; and a spring arranged to permit yielding of said hook member away from the palm of the hand, substantially as described.

2. A corn husker comprising a hook member: means for securing said hook member to the arm of a user thereof; a hook pivotally connected to said hook member with said hook projecting toward the-*palmof'the' hand; and a spring arranged to permit yielding of said hook member 'away from: the palm of the hand, substantially as described.

3. A com husker comprising a flexible member terminating a hook, a plurality of means for securing said memberv to the outer side of the arm and forearm of the user and with said hook positioned opposite to. and projecting toward the palm of the hand, whereby bending of the elbow causes retraction of said hook, substantially asd-ee. ser bed. v I 1 l.
