FEEDING MECHANISM FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
To all whom it mayconcern .Be itknown that we, HERBERT CoRnALL and JAMES Mom Fomsns, subjects of the King of the United Kingdom of Great Brltain and Ireland, residing, respectively, at Parkview, Helensburgh, Dumbartonshire, Scotland, and Scotstoun, Glasgow, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Feeding Mechanism for Sewing-Machines, of which the followlngis a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements 1n feeding mechanism for sewing machines, and has for its object to provide simple, efficient and convenient means of adjusting the feed from a point above the work-plate of the machine.
The improvements comprise a feed-rocker connected to a feed-bar of the usual construction and provided with a crank-arm which receives motion from the driving shaft of the machine through a sliding connection with a feed-actuating pitman, the latter being provided with a strap to embrace an eccentric on the said driving shaft. The crank-arm of the feed-rocker is in the form of a split tubular post. Slidingly fitted upon the said postiis a block having a forked lateral lug, andslidingly fitted within the cavity insaid post .is an internally screw-threaded annular member having a lateral projection passing through the split or slotted wall of the post and d sposed intermediate the members of said forked lug, the arm being secured to the forked lug by means of a suitable screw or bolt.
The end of the pitman or eccentric rod has a pivotal connection with the slide block, and an adjusting screw is employed to vertically adjust the block relatively to the tubular post. The adjusting screw fits within the cavity of the post and engages the internally threaded member of the block, and its notched end may be manipulated, by means of a key or the like passing through an aperture formed in the bed-plate to raise or lower the block as desired. By the means thus briefly described, the sliding connection between the feed actuating pitman and the ,feederocker may readily be moved toward or :from the axis of movement of the latter to vary the length of feed.

The improvements are shown applied to a machine comprising the bed-plate A, hollow standard B and work-plate C. The usual driving-wheel 1 is indicated by dotted lines and is carried by the driving-shaft 2, the latter rotating within suitable bearings supported by the standard B and the bearing support D rising from the bed-plate of the machine. The feed-dog 3 is adjustably secured by means of the stud-screw 4 upon the feed-bar 5 which overhangs the feed-lift eccentric 6 on the driving-shaft 2. A short pitman 7 is provided with a strap 8 which embraces the eccentric v6, the pitman being connected to the feed-bar 5 by the pin 9. The enlarged apertured rear end of the feedbar is fitted between the apertured branches of a yoke y formed at the end of the arm 10* of the feed-rocker 10, being pivotally connected to the yoke by means of a pin 5", the latter being held in position by the clamping screw 11.

, tubular crank-arm 13, forming part of the in position by means of two clamping screws 14. The connection between crank-arms 13 and eccentric rod 17 comprises a slide block 15 loosely fitted upon the crank-arm and formed with an apertured boss 15* adapted to receive a pin 16 which pivotally connects the boss with the'yoked end 18 of the eccentric rod. The opposite end of the eccentric rod is provided with a strap 20 which embraces the eccentric 21 upon driving shaft 2.
It will be seen that adjustment of the slide block 15 toward or from the axis of movement of the feed-rocker 10 will vary the length of movement imparted to the feedbar 5 and hence will effect a change in the To this end, the tubular crank-arm 13 is formed with a slot 13*? to receive the lateral projection 22 of an internally screw-threaded annular member 23 slidingly fitted within the cavity of the crank-arm. The projection 22 is disposed intermediate the members of a forked lug 24c projecting laterally from the block 15, and is. secured to the lug by means of a screw 25. An adjustin giscrew 26 fits within the cavity of the tubular crank-arm and engages the member 23 of the slide block. The adjusting screw is held against endwise movement, and for this purpose it is provided below its notched head with a flange 26 held between a lower washer 27 and upper washers 28, 29. The lower washer rests upon a seat 8 formed angularly of the tubular-arm, and the upper washers are held in position by means of an apertured cap 30 which is threaded to engage threads formed in the upper internal wall of the tubular arm. The washer 28 may be made of yielding material to compensate for wear in the lower washer 27the latter being preferably formed of metal.
The upper end of the tubular-arm 13 projects immediately below the work-plate C, and the latter is formed with an aperture 31 to permit manipulation of the adjusting screw from a point above the work-plate by means of a key, screw driver or the like. By turning the screw 26 the slide block 15 will be raised or lowered uponthe arm 13, and the connection between the pitman 17 and feed-rocker 13 will be correspondingly Ehangedin position to alter the length of eed.
- The arrangement above described provides a simple, convenient and effective means for obtaining instantaneous adjustment of the length of feed, while retaining the same rigidity as the slotted quadrant adjusting means of well known construction.
It will be understood that the invention is not limited to the precise construction and arrangement of elements herein illustrated. For instance, it is evident that the slideblock 15 may be connected to the element 23 by means other than the forked lug 24; and
any suitable means may be employed for holding the adjusting screw 26 against endwise movement.
Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what we claim herein is 1. In feeding mechanism for sewing machines, the combination with a feed-dog, a feed-rocker and an operative connection beof a driving shaft, a tubular crank-arm carried by said rocker, a reciprocating element operatively connected to the driving shaft, a slide-block engaging the exterior surface of the crank-arm and connected withthe said reciprocating element, and an adjusting screw held against endwise movement within the said crank-arm-and adapted to move ....,the sliderblock toward and from the axis of the feed-rocker.-

4. In feeding mechanism for sewing machines, the combination with a work-support having an aperture therein and a feeddog, of means for imparting operative movements to the feed-dog including a feedrocker, a tubular crank-arm connected to said feed-rocker andextending upwardlytherefrom toward said aperture, an internally-threaded slide-block fitted within the cavity of thecrank-arm, a driving shaft, a reciprocating element operatively connected to said driving shaft, a connection be tween said reciprocating element and the slide-block, and an adjusting screw fitted within the crank-arm and engaging the slideblock, the said adjusting screw moving with the crank-arm below the work-support and into register with said aperture whereby the length of feed may be readily adjusted without disturbing the machine.
5. In a feed mechanism for a sewing machine having a work-support provided with an aperture therein, in combination, a feedbar rocker having a substantially vertical arm, means for oscillating said rocker comprising a-sleeve'adiustable on said arm toward and from the axis of the rocker, and a screw for adjusting said sleeve, the head of said screw lying below and in registry with said opening, whereby the length of feed may be readily adjusted without disturbing the machine.
6. In a feed mechanism for sewing machines, in combination, a work-support having an aperture therein, a feed-bar, and means for imparting thereto a longitudinal, fabric-feeding motion, comprising a feedrocker having a substantially vertical arm, mechanism for oscillating said rocker, and connections between said rocker and said mechanism comprising a member longitudinally adjustable upon said vertical arm, and means for adjusting the same, said last means being located below and in registry with the opening in the Work-support.
7. In feeding mechanism for sewing machines, in combination, a work-support having an aperture therein, a feed-dog, and means for imparting to said dog a longitudimotion I comprising a feed-rocker, a driving shaft, a connection between said driving shaft and feed-rocker including a block slidable upon the feedrocker and adjustable toward and from the axis of the latter, and means for so adjusting said block, said means being located below the work-support and in registry with the opening therein, whereby the stitch length adjusting means is at all times readily accessible to the operator.
