To all whom it may'concern Be it known that I, JoHN T. Haonwooo, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Clarksville, in the county of Montgomery and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cross-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railway ties and clamps and has for its object the provision of novel means whereby steel cross ties are provided with rail supporting portions associated with rail clamping members, the said clamping members being operable to engage and hold rails on the cross ties or to release the said rails so that they can be removed without injury to the cross tie or the clamping members.
A further object of this invention is to provide a cross tie which is comparatively light in construction, yet possessing relatively large and wholly etlicient rail supporting portions on which the base of the rail may rest and by which it is prevented from lateral movement.
A still further object of this invention is to provide rail clamping members with means for holding the rail clamping members in engagement with the base flanges of the rails, means being provided for increasing the pressure of the rail clamping members according to the requirements in practice.
\Vith the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 illustrates a view in perspective of a cross tie with fragments of rails shown associated therewith, one of said rails being clamped in place and the other rail in position to be applied to the cross tie;

'In these drawings, the cross tie is shown as comprising a base 6 with flanges 7 at. its ends and a longitudinally disposed web or rib 8 extending from one flange to the other approximately at the center of the said base. The said base is further provided with lugs or spurs 9 which lodge in the roadbed and prevent movement of the said cross ties.
At the points on the web 8 where the rails are supported, the said web is recessed to form shoulders 10 and 11, the said shoulders engaging the edges of the base flanges of the rails and forming seats which will, to a great extent, prevent dislodgment of the said rails. The said base is furthermore provided with transversely disposed webs l2 and 13 which intersect and are integral with the web 8, the said webs l2 and 13 extending longitudinally of the rail so that they constitute eifective supports for the rai As a means for holding the rails on the cross ties, the cross ties are provided with clamping members, each comprising a shank 14 and a jaw 15, the said shank having an aperture 16 therein for the reception of a bolt or other pivot 17 on which the shank is oscillatably mounted. The jaws are each held in engagement with a base flange of a rail by a tension member which consists of a lug 18 preferably formed from the web 8 the said lug having a screw 19 threaded therein, the end of the said screw being adapted to bear against the shank of the clamp for pressing the clamp into engagement with the base flange of the rail. It is understood that the elements associated with each clamping member are duplicated as a part of the invention, and a description of one will suflice as a disclosure of all the means herein for holding the rails in engagement with the cross ties.

In a cross tie, a base, a web supported by the base, said web having notches in its edge forming seats for rails, webs extending transversely of the base and connected to the longitudinally disposed web for supporting rails, clamps, means for pivotally mounting the clamps in operative relation to base flanges of rails resting on the cross tie, and tension members for holding the clamp in place. a I
