ASSIGNOR TO OLIVER IRON &
STEEL COMPANY, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA, A CORPORATION OF PENN- SYLVANIA.
HEATING-FURNACE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,IGHARLES FASSINGER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Heating-Furnaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to apparatus for heatlng round blanks such, for instance, as bolt-blanks where one end of the blank is to be heated properly for upsetting to form the head of the bolt.
The object of my invention is to provide means for heating blanks by which the blanks are heated uniformly to the proper temperature for the upsetting or forging of the metal, thereby reducing the time required for the heating of the blank and, at the same time, producing a better finished product due to the fact that the uniform heating of the blanks causes less oxidation and consequent reduction in loss of metal due to scale.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1- is a side elevation, partly in section of my improved apparatus; Fig. 2 is a cross section on the line 22, Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail of the pusher mechanism.
In the drawings, the numeral 2 designates a suitable base or foundation upon which is supported the furnace 3, and as I have illus-' trated and will describe my invention chiefly in connection with the heating of boltblanks, the furnace 3 is constructed with that idea particularly in view.
The furnace 3 has the heating chamber 4 which may be heated by'gas admitted by v1n the proper distribution of g being supplied in sulficient quantities to give the proper combustion. A refractory lining 6 is provided for the furnace.
The furnace is provided with a cover 7 and the slotted opening 8 extending from one end of the furnace to the other for the entrance of theportion of the blank 9 to be heated. The blank is supported by the top of the side-wall 10 and at its outer end rests upon the guide-bar 11 which is car- Specification of Letters Patent.

ried by the bracket 12. This guide-rod l1 acts in conjunction with the upper guide-bar 13 to form a guide or runway for the outer end of the blank in its passage from one end of the furnace to the other through slot 8, all as fully hereinafter set forth.
To protect that portion of the blank not used in forming the head of the bolt against the heating action of the furnace, I provide the tank 14 which extends for the length of the furnace, and which is located at the proper point so as to protect that portion of the blank not required ,to be heated from the heat of the furnace. Accordingly this tank is located over the'wall 10 and together with said wall forms a passageway 15 for the movement of the blank in its movement from one end of the furnace to the other. Water is admitted to the tank let by the pipe 16 and the-water flows from the tank by the outlet pipe 17, so that a constant circulation of water is maintained so as to give the proper cooling effect.
The blanks 9 are fed to the furnace one by one and are contained in a hopper 18 with an inclined bottom 19. In order to keep the bolt-blanks in proper position for feeding from the hopper to the vertical passage 20, a suitable agitator 21 is provided which is arranged to oscillate. This agitator 21 is arranged adjacent to the upper end of the passage 20 and said agitator fits in the circular seat 22 and is provided with the fiat front face 23. Connected to the outer end of the agitator is the crank-arm 24: which is connected up by the rod 25 to the eccentric 26 on the shaft 27 y A pusher 28 is secured to the slide-block 29, said slide-block forming part of the movable frame 30. This frame 30 has the sliding bearing 31 which surrounds the crank portion 32 of the shaft 27 and said frame is moved back and forth by movement of the crank. A bracket 34 is carried by the frame 30 and said bracket carries the adjustable fin er 35.
reciprocatory shelf 36 is adapted to move in the guide 37, said shelf being con-- herewith, Serial No. 171,186. Accordingly the spring 40 advances the shelf and supports the-blanks in the passage 20 until the pusher advances again and one of the blanks in the passage 20 drops down onto the pusher when the shelf is withdrawn. The blanks are advanced in this way by step-by-step movement and with their inner ends projecting through the slot 8 into the furnace and the cooling action of the water in the tank 14 protects the remaining portion of the blank from the heat of, the furnace, and consequently only'that portion necessary to form the head is heated to a welded heat. The heat of the furnace isso regulated that by the time that a blank has passed from one end of .the furnace to the other and is discharged onto the inclined table 42, the
- blank will have been heated to the proper temperature so that the operator standing at this point can pick up the blanks as they are delivered to the table 42 and feed them to the heading machine.
The time required for heating the blank is greatly reduced due to the fact that the blanks move through the furnace from one end to the other and all the blanks are subjected to the same heating action. If one portion of the furnace is more highly heated than another, this difference in temperature has no effect on the blanks as a whole. In the old method of inserting and withdrawing the blanks by hand, one blank may be inserted at a hotter oint in the furnace than another, and may e unnecessarily heated A while another blank may not be heated the required amount. The overheating of the blanks causes a greater scale and consequent loss in metal.
c By my invention the blanks are delivered to the hopper and delivered therefrom to the pusher, which moves the blanks through the furnaceautomatically.- The uniformly heated blanks are delivered onto the table 42 ready to be upset or forged to the shape required. When once the heat of the furnace has been regulated so that the blanks are delivered therefrom at the proper temperature, no further attention need be paid to it. The only attendant required is the man who picks up the blanks from the table 42 and feeds them to the upsetting or forging machine.
What I claim is:
1. In apparatus for heating round, elongated blanks forshaping, the combination of a furnace having a runway to one side ofand outside of the furnace chamber for supporting the blanks in positionfor heating, said furnace having a longitudinallyextending slot along the same side as said runway, means at the outer end of said runway for feeding the blanks by gravity to said runway, and means for advancing the blanks intermittently along said runway.
2. In apparatus for heating round elongated blanks for shaping, the combination of a furnace having a runway to one side of and outside of the furnace chamber for supporting the blanks in position for heating, said furnace having a longitudinallyextending slot on the same side as said runway, a passage at the outer end of said runway communicating therewith whereby the blanks are fed by gravity to said runway, and means for advancing said blanks-intermittently along said runway.
In testimony whereof, I the said CHARLES FASSINGER, have hereunto set my hand.
CHARLES FASSINGER.
