To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, THOMAS SPENCER MILLER and Lotus G. RUooLEs, citizens of the United States, and residents, respectively, of South Orange, in the county of Essex, State of New Jersey, and New York city, borough ofv Manhattan, in the county of New York, State of New York, have inventtuating engine or motor,

A further object is to provide a hoisting engine which will embody a plurality of drums each provided with its individual acwhich may be driven to operate said drums simultaneously or independently of each other, and in which the actuating engines or motors may have the power thereof combined to act as the driving means drums.
In accomplishing the above ob ect we prefer to employ a plurality of drumseach hav ing its own individual driving engine or motor, and connect each drum with its engine or motor by an individual drive connect-ion,
whereby the drums are individually driven,
for one of or either of the and also provide means for connecting the individual drum driving means, whereby both the drums will be simultaneously driven and the power of both engines or motors may be exerted upon one of the drums.
The invention consists in improvements to be more full described hereinafter, and the novelty of which will be particularly pointed out and distinctly claimed.

Fig. 3 is a detailed top plan view partly in section of a coupling means for connecting the motors for driving the drums shown in Fig. 1, so that both motors or engines may exert their power upon one of the drums.
Referring to the drawings by characters of reference 30, 31 designate hoisting drums mounted respectively on suitable shafts 32, 33, preferably arranged in longitudinal alinement and journaled in the side frames 36 and the intermediate member 37 of the bed-plate of the engine structure. In the preferred embodiment the drums 30, 31 are keyed or otherwise rigidly fixed to the shafts 32, 33, and each drum carries a driving gear shown respectively at 34, 35. Extending parallel with the axis of revolution of the drums 30, 31 are two driving shafts 38, 38 arranged in longitudinal alinement and having hearing at their outer ends in pedestals 39, and at their inner ends in said intermediate frame member 37. Each'of these shafts 38, 38 carries a driving pinion 40, said pinions meshing respectively with the gears 34, 35

The opposite ends of the armature shafts from the ends carrying the gears 42 are each provided with a friction disk or brake wheel 44 with which coiiperates suitable brake mechanism 45 operated by a solenoid 46 to positively grip and hold the armature shafts against notation. Referring particularly to Fig. l of the drawings, it will be seen that the controller operating shafts 48 are arranged in longitudinal alinement with each other, and are provided at their inner or adjacent ends h coupling extensions 50 having polyends 51 adapted to be connected by a coupling sleeve 52 provided with when said extensions are disconnected, secure the sleeve to the extension carryin the same. It will be understood that this sleeve 52 is movable lengthwise of said shafts to couple them together to cause the controllers to be simultaneously operated, or said coupling may be moved in the opposite direction to disconnect the controller shafts so that said controllers set forth.

It is hereby certified that Letters Patent No. 1,252,473, granted January 8, 1918, upon the application of Thomas Spencer Miller, of South Orange, New Jersey, and Louis G. Buggies, of New York, N. Y., for an improvement in Hoisting- Engines, were erroneously issued to the inventors, said Miller and Ruggles, and the Lidgerwood Manufacturing Compenyas assignee of one-half interest in said invention, whereas said Letters Patent should have been issued to the first-named inventor, said Thomas Spencer Miller and Lidgerwood Manufacturing Company, said corporation being assignee of the interest of said Ruggles only, as shown by the record of assignments in this oflice; and that the said Letters Patent should be read with this correction therein that the same may conform to the record of the case in the Patent Ofiice.
