The invention relates to a machine orl Ywhich drawings:

The machine or apparatus comprises a steel ram or piston 1, which is slidably mountedin the ram cylinder 2; this cylinder extends into a member 3 having therein chambers 3 for holding liquid. This member ,3 is sometimes referred to as the chamber member and sometimes as the liquidcontaining member. A pump P is secured to this chamber member and is constructed so as to force liquid from the chambers 3 int-o the cylinder 2, whereby the ram can be i forced forwardly, as in the direction of the arrow A. The pump has the usual valve constructions suitable for this purpose and a further description of the pump is unnecessary at this time. The body or casing 5 of the pump extends in the same general direction that the plunger or ram 1 extends, that is, longitudinally of the machine; in other words, the pump body and the ram are substantially parallel. At the side of the pump body there is a socket G which receives the handle 7 when the pump is in use.
The bending machine also comprises the side pieces 8 constituting hooks or jaws. The ends 8 of these hooks or jaws are .the

portions which engage or receive. the work pieces to be operated upon,and these side pieces may be referred to as the .workengaging members because they directly engage the work to be operated upon or at least the filling pieces between the work andthe jaw members. s p
The bending machine also comprises what may be `considered as a trapezoidal frame having a head member 9, which provides the upper or small end member of the trape- Zoid. This head is preferably, in the form of a steel casting and extends transversely of the bending machine. A member 10, preferably of wrought iron, constitutes the rest of the frame and it comprises the trans` versely extending portion 117 which is4 the base portion of the trapezoid, and the side portions 12 and 13. The head end of each side portion is bent inwardly at `f 2 and 113 and is secured as by means of the bolts 14 and l5 to the head member 9. The head member 9 has a pair of spaced ears or lugs 16 and 17 at one end thereof and a similar pair of spaced ears or lugs 18 andl at the other end thereof. The transversely extending portion 11 constitutes a transversely extending brace between the side. pieces 3.
The side pieces 8 each have an eye or projection as 8a, which fits into the space between the lugs. The side member is held in place on the head as by means of a pin or bolt as 20. The side pieces or hooks are furthermore secured to the frame member as by means ofbolts which pass through the openings 21, thus securing the said pieces 8 directly to the side portions 1:2 or 13, as the case may be.
At theupper side of the head there are also provided handles 22, which can be employed for lifting the bending' machine from one place to another. Handles 23 are also provided upon the side pieces or ,hook members 8.
The transversely extending base member or brace 11 has an opening 24 through which the plunger or ram 1 passes when the 1nachine is being operated.
In Fig. l the plunger is shown in its rearward or inoperative position. From the inspection of this figure it will be observed that the chamber member 3 isvsecured in place upon the head by means of a bolt 25, which passes through the head and is screwed into a boss 2G that is upon the rear or head end of the member 3. The cylinder 2 is held in place in the member 3 by means of the screws 2^?, which maintain the head end or rear end of the cylinder pressing against the member 3.
A suitable packing as 28 is provided between the member 3 and an enlarged or shoulder portion of the cylinder 2. When in operatiton that part of the force which is exerted or reacts in a rearward direction must be resisted. This force which must be resisted is transmitted bythe liquid within thecylinder to the rear or head end of the cylinder 2, thence to the rear or head end of the member 3 and finally to the head 9, to which the side pieces 8 are secured. This head member 9 may therefore be referred to as a resistance head because it resists the action of the cylinder. A ram cylinder bracket 28a is secured by bolts 29 to the Y transversely extending` trapezoidal base members or brace l1. y
This cylinder bracket comprises two upright members 30 and a semi-cylindrical portion 3l, which together' constitute a single member; in other words, the parts 30 and 3l are integral. The semi-cylindrical portion 3l extends around and fits one-half of the forward end of the cylinder 2 and a bracket band or strap 32 extends around the other half. The member 32 has ears 33 that receive the bolts 34, which are relied upon to secure the semicylindrical members 31 and 32 together, whereby the forward end of the cylinder 2 will be firmly secured to the transversely extending brace member l1. The ram cylinder bracket 28a, the ram cylinder 2 and its connection to the head member 9 constitutes a strut, which can be relied upon to strengthen the trapezoidal frame structure as a whole and thus strengthen the bending machine as a whole, and as far as the strut function is concerned the cylinder constitutes a casing for the ram. The wrought metal member 10 is sometimes referred to as a triangular shaped member, because it approximates the shape of a triangle. It is also often referred to as an inner frame member. lt will be observed that the side pieces 8 diverge in passing from the head end to the work engaging end of the bending machine and that the trapezoidal base member or transversely-extending brace 11 serves as a strut or brace between the side members or hooks.
The piston is provided with a rack 35, and a gear 36 meshes with this rack. This gear is carried on a sha-ft 37 which is carried in bearings 38 that are mounted upon the transversely extending member ll. The gear 36 may be relied upon to force the plunger to its rearward position after the bending machine has been used, whereby the ram will be properly restored to its initial position for a succeeding operation. This rack 35 and gear 36 are therefore referred to as the return-in rack and gear.
In the construction shown the sidepieces or work engaging members 8 can be readily replaced and substituted by others should a fracture occur. A similar statement applies to practically all parts of the machine, as embodied in the construction shown. The construction is .therefore such as will facilitate replacement or repair.
Vith the body of the pump arranged as shown, the machine occupies Ycomparatively small amount o-f space. Of course when the machine is being transported, the handle 7 is removed from the machine.
It will be manifest that the invention can be embodied in various formsVr and modifications without departing from the spirit and scope thereof.

A bending machine' of the class described comprising in combination a transversely extending head having ears at each end thereof, a pair of work engaging members or hooks,` one of 'which is connected to the ears at one end of the head, the other of which is connected to the ears at the other end of the head, which hooks diverge in passing from the head, an inner frame member having an end portion which is secured to said head at one end of the latter, side portions which are secured to one of the work engaging members or hooks, a transversely extending portion, a side portion which is secured to the otherwork engaging member or hooks, and' an end portion which is secured to the other end of the head, a chamber member containing liquid, which chamber member is secured to said head, a cylinder located within the chamber member and secured to the latter, a piston or ram in said cylinder, a pump for forcing liquid from the chamber member into said cylinder so as to force the ram outwardly away from the head, and a cylinder bracket for connecting the forward end of the cylinder to the central part of the transversely extending portion of the inner frame member.

A rail `bending machine of the class described comprising in combination a trapey zoidal frame having a transversely extending head member that is provided with an ear or ears at each end thereof, and a wrought metal inner Vframe member which provides the base and side portions of the trapezoid, the head end of said side portions being bent inwardly and secured to said head member, work engaging members or hooks which are connected to the head member, whichA work engaging members diverge in passing from the head, said work engaging members being connected to the side portions of the frame, a chamber member secured to the head, a cylinder extending within the chamber member and secured to the latter, a piston or ram in said cylinder, and a pump for forcing liquid from said chamber member into said cylinder, the body of which pump is located within said trapezoidal frame.

A bending machine of the class described comprising in combination a frame, hooks or work engaging members carried by said frame, a portion of which frame provides a transversely extending member between said hooks or work engaging members, a piston or ram, means between said frame and said piston or ram for forcing the ram forwardly through an o-pening in said transversely extending frame member, and a return-in gear carried by said transversely extending frame member for moving the ram rearwardly by engagement with a rack on the latter. a

A bending machine of theclass described comprising in combination a frame member, diverging hooks or work engaging members secured to said frame member, said frame member having a transversely extending portion for serving as a brace between said diverging work engaging members, a resistance member to which the work engaging members are connected, a ram which is movable forwardly through an opening in said transversely extending member, a cylinder for said ram, the rearward pressure of said cylinder being resisted by said resistance member, means for forcing liquid into said cylinder so that the ram will be forced forwardly, and a bracket connecting the forward end of said cylinder and said transversely extending frame member.

A bending machine of the class described comprising in combination a head member', diverging hooks or work engaging members, the converging ends of which hooks or work engaging members are detachably connected to said head member, an inner frame member engaging said head member, said inner frame member having side portions which are connected to said hooks or work engaging Vmembers and a transverse member or portion which connects said side portions, a ram and a casing therefor, the rear end of said. casing being supported by said head member and the forward end of said casing being secured to said transverse member or portion.

A bending machine of the class described comprising in combination a trapezoidal frame having a transversely extending head member and a wrought metal inner frame member, which inner frame member has a transversely extending portion that constitutes the base of the trapezoid and inwardly extending portions that constitute the side portions of the trapezoid, the head end of which side portions are secured to said head member, a liquid containing chamber member secured to said head member, a ram cylinder secured to said liquid containing chamber member, a bracket for securing the forward end of said cylinder to the transversely extending portion of the frame member that constitutes the base of the trapezoid, diverging work engaging members or hooks, the ends of which that are nearest to each other being secured to the head member, a pump body located between the side portions of said trapezoidal frame, which pump body extends substantially parallel to the axis of the cylinder, and a ram located within said cylinder, the construction being such that the pump can force liquid from the liquid chamber into the cylinder. A hydraulic rail bending machine comprising in combination a transversely extending 'head member having handles, forwardly extending work engaging members or. hooks secured to said head member, one hook being secured to saidhead member by beingl connected to an ear construction at one end of the member, the other hook beingsecured to said head member by being connected to an ear construction at the other end of said head member, a wrought metal frame member having side portions which are secured to' said jaw and a transverse portion providing a brace between said hooks, a cylinder located between said head and said transversely extending brace, the rear end of which cylinder is secured to said head,
the forward end of which cylinder is secured to said brace, a plunger or ram within said cylinder, and a pump having a body which extends in substantially the same direction as the ram, which pump is constructed so as to supply fiuid under pressure to the interior of said cylinder.
12. A rail bender of the comprising in combination a trapezoidal frame having a head member at the small end of the trapezoid, work engaging niembers or hooks secured to said head member,
which work engaging members or hooks are secured to the side portions of the trapezoidal frame, a cylinder arranged to press against the head member, a ram or piston within said cylinder, which ram or piston passes through an opening in the base portion ofthe trapezoidal frame, means for forcing fluid into the cylinder so as to force the ram or piston away from the head member, and means carried by the base portion of the trapezoidal frame for forcing the piston or ram toward the head member.

A bending machine of the class described comprising in combination a trapezoidal frame having a transversely extending head member, diverging work engaging members or side pieces having the ends which are nearest to each other secured to said head member, said side piece members being braced by the base portion of the trape- Zoid, a cylinder secured to said head member, said cylinder also being secured by class described.

A bending machineof the class de'-V scribed comprising in combination a trape- Zoidal frame having a transversely extending head member, diverging work engaging members or hooks which are secured to said head member and which are braced by the base portion of the trapezoid, a cylinder secured to said head member, and secured by means of a bracket to said base portion of the trapezoid, a ram' or piston in said cylinder', and a pump forforcing fluid into said cylinder, the body of which pump is located between the work engaging members or hooks. . 15.A bending machine of the class described comprising in combination a trapezodial frame having a head member, diverging work engaging members or hooks secured to said head member, a member extending from one vhook to theother and serving as a transversely extending brace, a cylinder secured to said head member and to said transversely extending brace, a ram or plunger in said cylinder, and means carried L by the transversely extending brace for forcing the lplunger or ram into the cylinder.
