FFIG EDWIN J. TOOF, OF FORT MADISON, IOWA.
IMPRQVEMENT IN RUFFLING ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,231, dated April 2, 187:2.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWIN .1. TOOF, of Fort Madison, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Ruffling Attachments for Sewing-Machines; and I .do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in a presser-foot provided with a folding-in or hemming device, and a bent arm for the reciprocating feed-plate and actuating-lever of a ruffling attachment for sewing-machines, said feed-plate being provided with a foldingin or hemming device, which answers the double purpose of a hemmer or a holder for a guide, which may be used in connection with the presser-foot, said feed-plate being also provided with a set-screw for regulating a de tached lug-plate used in connection with the actuating-lever for the feed-plate, the ruffiing-point of which can be adjusted with relation to the needle through the medium of said set-screw and detached lug-plate.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of my specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improvement in rut-fling attachment for sewing-machines. Fig. 2 is an end view of the feedplate. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the detached lug-plate for the feed-plate.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents an ordinary presser-foot, provided with a folding-in or hemming device, B. From the side of the presser-foot A projects a bent arm, 0, upon the lower limb of which is placed a feed plate, E, which slides on and is held to the limb by the bent portion 9 of the plate. The plate E is provided with a folding-in or hemming device, j, which is formed by bending over portions of the plate, as indicated in Fig. 2, thus constructing the feed-plate and hemnier of one piece of metal. The hemmer f also answers the purpose of a holder for a guide, which may be used in combination with the plate and presser-foot for guiding a piece of goods to be ruffled and sewed between two other pieces of goods, the upper piece being hemmed at the same operation. But when the guide is not used the hemming device f may be used in combination with the presserfoot, whereby a piece of goods may be hemmed, ruffled, and sewed to any part of another piece of goods. The feed-plate has a portion of it turned up at a right angle to the horizontal plane of the plate, as indicated at w. This turned-up portion of the plate is used for supporting the back of the detached lug-plate h, shown in Fig. 3. This plate h is provided with two lugs, 46 t, which, in connection with the set-screw k on the feed-plate, are used for adjusting the ruffling-point n with relation to the needle. The ends of the set-screw k fit neatly between the lugs t of the lug-plate h, and the back of the plate rests against the part a: of the feed-plate E when in proper position as shown in Fig. 1. By removing the detached lug-plate and turning the set-screw k the ruffling-point n of the feed-plate may be adjusted with relation to the needle. The actuating-lever D and piece m, furnished with a set-screw, l, are pivoted to the bent arm 0, as indicated at s. The presser-foot A is attached to the presser-bar of the sewing-machine, and the lever D at w straddles the screw which holds the needle in position.
The operations of the lever D and. feed-plate E are the same as that described in Letters Patent, granted to me October 24, 1871, No. 120,173, to which reference may be had for a more full description of the operation.
Having thus described the nature, construc tion, and operation of my improvement in ruffling-attachments for sewing-machines, what I claim as being of my invention is- 1. The presser-foot A, provided with the hemming device B, bent arm 0, and actuating-lever D, and combined with the feed-plate E, substantially as herein described, .and for the purpose set forth.
2. The feed -plate E, constructed as described, and provided with a set-screw, k, and detached lug-plate h, substantially as and for the purpose herein set forth.
EDWIN J. TOOF.
