I Be it known that I, FRANK DE Minroo, a citizen of the United States, and a resident 'of New York, Bronx borough, in the county of' Bronx and State of New York, have inented certain new and useful Improvejments in Printing Mechanisms, ofwhich the following is .a specification. I
This invention relates to printing mecha nisms and has for its object to provide, for use in a printing machine having an ink ribbon, a mechanism of the class Specified wherein the ink ribbon is fed forwardly for each printing cycle a net amount less than themovement of the printing form, while feeding the ribbon at the speed of the printing form'during its engagement therewith.
With these objects in view my improvements comprise means illustrated in their" preferred embodiment in the drawing accompanying this specification wherein the figure of the drawing is a diagrammatic e elevation of so much of a rinting machine as will suflice to suitab y show the speed slower than the speed of web 19,

Therein a type-form, which may comprise a type-form carrier 2 having a chain of" type-form units 3 led therearound, is mounted for rotation on a fixed axis 4c. Therebe low'platen 5 is pivoted at 6 on arm 7 which swings on fixed pivot 8 remote from pivot 63. Said platen 5 has a downwardly extending arm 9 carrying roll 10 which together with roll 11 also pivoted at 6 engages rotating cam 12 on fixed pivot 13. Rolls 10 and 11 may be urged to engagement with cam 12 by pull spring 14: one end of which is attached to arm 9 and the other end of which engages fixed pin 15.
Type-form carrier 2 may be constantly rotated in the direction of its arrow, or in-f termittently if desired. The cam mechanism just described is efficient for causing platen 5 to coact in rolling contact with successive type-forms on chain 3 when cam 12 is rotated in the direction of its arrow'at a speed four times that of type-form carrier 2, said cam having six lobes while the type-formcarrier has I twenty-four typeformseats,as16. Closely above said web 19 and between it and the type-form, ink-ribbon 24 is led in parallelism with said web and inthe same direction. Said ribbon may be conveniently stored on supply roll 25 and which roll is preferably under frictional tension tending to retard'the paying out ofsaid ribbon. For feeding said ribbon forwardly'in the direc tion of its arrow I provide'rolls 33 and 34. For taking up and storing said ribbon 24: I provide roll26 on fixed pivot 35. Said roll 26 may be frictionally driven by some wellknown means not shown, to at onetime wind up said ribbon and at another time release it as more fully explained hereinafter.
Rolls 33 and 34 are rotatedin'the direction of their arrows'by some-well known means not shown, to advance said ribbon at a make a clear impression and not smudgethe web. To this end I'provide means comprising a movable member such as rollf27,
operable during the coaction of the typeform' and platen for paying out stored slack in the ribbon and thereby permitting the ribbon to travel at the speed of the typeform and platen and for thereafter retrieving from roll 26 an equal amount of ribbon after the type-form and platen have relinquished their grip thereon. In an organized, machine embodyingmy improvements ,inembe rs 2, 12,22, 23, 33, 34 and the frictional drive f rolls 20 and26 will be geared together by gearingofwellknown character and of such ratios as to produce the timing described.
I claim:
1.111 a printing mechanism the combination of a type-form and a ,platen actuated for intermittent coaction, and for forward movement during their coaction, baninkribbon between said type-form and said platen traveling in the same direction as said type-form but at a slower speed, and means operable duringthe coaction of said type-form'aiid platenfor' paying out said ribbon for permitting it to travel at the speed of the type-form and platen and for retrieving a portion of said ribbon when the type-form and platen have relinquished their grip thereon.

In a printing mechanism the combination of a type-form and a platen actuated for intermittent coaction and :for forward movement during their coaction, an ink ribbon between Stld. type-form i and said platen traveling in the same direction as said type-form but at a slower speed, and meanscomprising a movably' mounted takeup member whereby slack is maintained in said ribbon between the periods of coaction of said type-form and platen and whereby said slack is paid out for permitting said ink-ribbon to be fedforwardly at the speed of the type-form and platen when gripped bet-ween thetype-form and platen during their coaction.
3. In a' printing mechanism the combination of a constantlytraveling type form,
a platen actuated ,for intermittent coaction with said type-form, an inkribbon between said type-form andsaidplaten traveling in the same direction a said type formr but at a slower speed, and means operableduring the coaction of said type-form and platen for paying out said ribbon for'permitting it to'travel at the speed of the type-form and platen and .for' retrieving a portion of said ribbon when the, type-form and platen have relinquished their grip thereon.
4:. In a printing mechanism thecombination of a constantly rotating type form, a platen actuated fior intermittent coaction with said type-form and during said coaction travelingin' the same direction and at thesame speed as said type-form, an ink- ,ribbon between said type-form and said platen traveling 111 ,the samer direction as said type-form but at a slower speed, and
means comprising a pair of members under whi ch sai d ribbon is led and a third member between said pair of members and over 7 which said ribbon is led and means for moving one of said members, whereby slack is maintained in said ribbon between the periods of coaction, of said type-form and platen, thereby permitting said ink-ribbon to be fed forwardlyat the speed of the typeform andiplaten ,when gripped between the type-form. and platen duringtheir coaction,

In a printing mechanism the combination of a constantly traveling type-form, a platen actuated for intermittent coaction with said type-form, an ink-ribbon between said type-form and said platen traveling in the same direction as said type-form but at a slower speed, a pair of members under which said ribbon is led and a third mem-,
ber between the units of said pair of members and over which said ribbon is led and means for moving one of said members, whereby slack is maintained in said ribbon between the periods of coaction of said typeform and platen, thereby permitting said ink-ribbon to be fed forwardly at the speed of the type-form and platen when gripped between the type-form and platen during their coaction.

In a. printing mechanism the combination of a constantly traveling type-form, a platen actuated for intermittent coaction with said type-form, an ink-ribbon between said type-form and said platen traveling in the same direction as said type-form but at a slower speed, a pair of rolls on fixed axes under which said ribbon is led, a roll mounted between the members of said pair of rolls over which said ribbon is led, and means for 10. In a printing mechanism the combination of a type-form and a platen actuated for intermittent coaction and for forward movement during their coaction, means for feeding an ink-ribbon between said type-form and platen in the same direction as said type-form but at a slower speed, means for feeding a web of material between said inkribbon and said platen, and means operable during the coaction of said type-form and platen for paying out said ribbon for per mitting it to travel at the speed of the typeform and for retrieving a portion of said ribbon when the type-form and platen have relinquished their grip thereon.

In a printing mechanism the combination of a type-form and a platen actuated for intermittent coaction and for forward movement during their coaction, means for feeding an ink-ribbon between said typeform and platen in the same direction as said type-form but at a slower speed, means for feeding a web of material between said ink-ribbon and said platen in the same direction and at the same speed as said typeform and platen during their coaction, and means operable during the coaction of said type-form and platen for paying out/said ribbon for-permitting it to travel at the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,
