To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ELMER C. NORTHRUP, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Francisco, in the county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented a new and useful Two-Table Nailing-Machine, of which the following is a specification, in such full and clear terms yas will enable those skilled in the art to construct and use the same.
This invention relates to a box nailing machine and its object is to provide a machine which will be simple in construction and which will be easily operated by unskilled help to produce a box, two sides .and one bottom being nailed at both ends in six operations.
This invention is intended to produce a machine which will nail both sides of the box onthe ends on one portion thereof, while another portion of the machine will subsequently nail the bottom to both ends, the sides requiring four nailing operations, while the bottom requires two nailing operations, the two parts of the machine being combined with a feeding device which supplies the nail chucks with four sets of nails for the sides, following which another series of chucks are supplied with two sets of nails 0 complete the nailing of the bottom to the An embodiment of the invention is shown in the drawing in which the same reference numeral is applied to the same portion throughout, and in which- Figure 1 'is aside elevation of the complete machine, i

The numeral 1 indicates the base of the machine from which base four posts 2, 3, 4,v and 5 project, the posts 2 and 5 being joined at thetop to form the main frame of the machine and carrying brackets 6, 7 which support the nail feeding chutes and the chutes leading to the nail chucks. The posts 2, 5 are formed with flanged guides on the edges thereof .and carry respectivelysupporting brackets 8, 9 through which the screws 10, 11 pass, said screws being adjusted by means of the hand wheels 12, 13 respectively. AThe screws 10, 11 support tables 14, 15 respectively, said tables having guides 16, 17 18" order to provide an abutment against which the box end may be placed to gage the proper position therefore when the side or bottom 1s to be nailed thereon.
The upper portion of the machine has inclined guides 23, 24 on which the cross head 25 is slidable.v The cross head is provided with plates 26, 27 secured thereto by bolts for ,directing it in its proper motion on the guides 23, 24 and it has pins 28, 29 which are connected with stirrups 30, 31 in turn connected to the driving links or rods 32, 33. The stirrups 30, 31 are slidable with respect to the links connected thereto by reason of the fact that springs 35, one for each of the links 32, 33, are interposed between the ends of the links and the bottom of the stirrup, thereby allowing-a certain movement of the driven into the box from the chucks before crossfhead with respect .to said links and enabling the machine to make boxesv of slightly di'erent size without injury thereto' when set in a given adjustment. The rods 40, 41 are connected to lugs 45, 46, while the lower ends of said rods lare connected to a cross bar 47 by means of lugs 48, 49 at the ends thereof. "The cross bar 47 has a groove in its upper slde to receive the heads of bolts 50, which bolts pass through lugs 51 carried by the upper end of the vnail chucks 52, the object being to provide means whereby the nail Achucks may be laterally adjusted. lt will be understood that the chucks are placed at a distance of a quarter lor three eighths of an inch above the box when the box is being made and that the nails are the chucks actually touch the box, but not untilthe nail drivers come down into contact with the top of the box is the nailing completed and at that time the chucks have been forced down into contact with the box because the heads 42 depress ,the chucks into contact with the box, but as soon as the drivers begin to rise the two springs 58 lift the chucksothe box and enable the workmen to quickly shift it to effect Athe other nailing operations. Extending from the hoppers 60 downwardly are ten coiled steel spring tubes 63, said tubes being of such a length as to enable the chucks to move up and down into and out of engagement with the box without being disengaged from the chuck hoppers 60 into which they project at their` lower ends. "llhe cam 71 is journaled on a stub shaft 7 2 lsecured to the frame 7 and it is operated by means of a bell crank lever having arms 7 3, 74, the latter arm having a link 75 connected with the pin 29, so that on each downward movement of the nail head the -cam will advance one step and will push the bar 69 carrying the nail escapements 76 to the right such a distance as is necessary to discharge the proper number of nails in the proper tubes. The precise position of the several escapements and nalls is illustrated in Fig. 8, in which it will be seen that the rst five escapements on thejright, Fig. 8, are in position to deliver a nail upon the next movement of the bar 76 over cam B, while the first five escapements at the left of the same figure are in such a position that the points of the escapements hold the nails and prevent them from being discharged on the following stroke. It will be understood that at this time the first live chucks at the left, Fig. 2 have previously had nails dropped therein and are ready to complete the nailing of the box side.l i
The machine is driven from a belt pulley 88 carried on the shaft 89, which shaft is supported in journal boxes of the posts F3 and 4. Above the shaft 89 there are shafts 90, 91 and 92, the shaft 91 being supported in journal boxes in said posts 3, 4, while the shaft 90 is a short shaft supported in a journal box of the post 3 and the shaft 92 is a short shaft supported in a journal box of the post 4. The shaft 89 carries a gear 93 in mesh with a larger gear 94 on the shaft 90, said shaft also having ar'gearv 95 inmesh with a larger gear 96 on the shaft 91, while the latter shaft carries a small gear 97 in mesh with a larger gear` 98 on the shaft 92, the object being to rotate the gear 98 slowly so vas to raise and lower the rod 99 pivoted to the gear 98 by the pin 100 and pivoted at its upper end to the nail box 65, the object being to roll the nails around in the nail box to work. them into the feeding slots carried thereby.
The pulley 88 has a clutch flange 101 which ccperates with the slidable clutch member 102 to drive the shaft 89 when engaged by theoperator. The slidable clutch member is-forced into engagement with the flange of the pulley by means of a heavy 4spiral spring 103 which bears on a washer 104 held in a fixed relation to the shaft by means of the pin 105. shaft 115 journaled in lugs 116, 117 on the base of 'the machine. The shaft 115 also has an arm 118 which is connected at its upper end to the link 119, which link is connected to the lever 110 and. thereby enables the workman to start the machine..
After the clutch members have been engaged the shaft 38 willbegin to rotate and will turn precisely one revolution, whereupon the cam 112 will engage the roller 111 and will throw the slidable clutch memberl out of engagement with the running mem-v ber and at the same time the brake 4lever 120 pivoted near the lower end of the post 3 at 121 will be forced over into engagement with a wheel 122 on. the shaft 89. The brake lever has an arm 123 loosely connected therewith by'means of the bolt v124I and spiral spring 125, the position and pressure of which determines the suddenness with which the shaft 89 will be stopped. The

The operation of the machine is as follows: The workmanfirst places a box side on the table 15. he then places a box end thereon and nails the upper side thereto, another end may then be placed adjacent the chuck and the side that has been nailed turned end for end. whereupon the second end is nailed thereto. As soon as the two ends have been nailed to the side, the side that has been placed on-the table may be picked up with the two ends and in two operations of the 'machine it will be nailed to the two ends, During the last operation of nailing the sides live nails will be delivered to the five right hand chucks, Fig. 2, and upon'the next movement of the foot 'lever t-he bottom will be nailed to the box,
after which the box may be reversed and the bottom is nailed to the other end, whereupon the cycle of operations is repeated with other box ends, sides and bottoms indefi- Anitely.
It is to be noted that the inclined position of the nail chucks is such with respect. to the table on which the nailing is done that when the sides and bottoms of boxes have been nailed on that the nails all incline in different directions. The object of this is to produce a stronger box` than would be the case if the nails were all driven in at right angles to planes of the sides and bottom. The result of driving the nails'in this manner is that to remove any `slde or bottom it is necessary to bend the nails. l
Having thus described my invention what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is as follows, modifications within the scope of the claims being expressly reserved:
l. A box nailing machine comprisin a frame,l two adjustable tables carried there y, sets of chucks for the tables, the set of chucks for each table being alined atthe back of the tables, chutes leading to said chucks, means to feed nails into said chutes, a cam to deliver two series of nails in one set of said chucks over one table and then to deliver a series of nails for a set of chucks over the second table, and means to drive the nails after they have been fed to the chucks. 2, A box nailing machine comprising a frame, two adjustable tables carried thereby, sets of chucks for the tables, the set of chucks for each tablel Ibeing alined at the back of the tables, chutes leading to the chucks, means to feed nails into said chucks, a cam to deliver two lseries of nails inthe chucks over one table and then to deliver a series of nails in the chucks over the other table, and means to operate nail drivers in all or the chucks on each operation of the machinea 3.. A bok nailing machine comprising a frame, two adjustable tables carried thereby, chucks for each table.. the set of chucks for each table being alined at the back of the tables,vnail chutes leading to each. chuck, a nail escapement for each nail chute, a cam to move said escapement to deliver two series or nails to the chucks over one table and then to deliver series of nails 'to the chucks over the other table, and means to drive the nails after they have been fed to the chucksa 4s A box nailing machine comprising a frame, two adjustable tables carried thereby,
side by side, nail chucks over each of the tables, a'gage adjacent the nail chucks for determmin the. position of the box shocks, means to leed two series of nails to the manera chucks over one of the tables and then to deliver series of nails to the chucks over the other table, a nail driver for each of the chucks, a slidable supporting arm for the` nail drivers, and means to-move said nail drivers, said means moving in a plane substantially parallel to the line of motion of the nail drivers.
5. A box nailing machine comprising a frame, two adjustable tables carried thereby, sets of chucks for the tables, a movable frame supporting said chucks, chutes leading to said chucks, means to feed nails into said chutes, a cam to deliver two series of nails in one set of chucks over one table and then to deliver a series of nails for the chucks over the second table, a nail driver for each chuck, means to resiliently support the Jframe carrying the nail chucks, and resilient means for moving the head carrying the nail drivers 6. A bok nailing machine comprising a frame, box supporting tables carried thereby, two series oit nail driving chucks carried by a movable trame, resilient supports for the frame carrying said chucks, means to drive the nails fed to the chucks into' a box placed on the support, said means forcing the chucks into contact with the box, the resilient supports. for the chuck holding frame lifting the chucks od the box immediately after the completion of the nailing operation and before the nail drivers have returned to the end of their throw, and a cam for feeding two series of nails to one set of nail driving chucks and a single series of nails to the other set of nail driving chucks.
