To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that 1, CHARLES B. 'MALoHow, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVarner, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented new and useful Improvements in Folding Twin Beds, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in folding twin beds, the objectof the invention being to provide-twin beds which are so connected together that one of said beds can be superimposed upon the other, or the upper of the two beds can be moved to rest partly upon the floor and partly'upon a support attached to the stationary twin bed, said support being soarranged and operated by mechanism operated by the movementof the movable bed relatively to the stationary bed that it will assume an operative position to support one side of the movable bed when said movable bed is moved from its superimposed position upon said stationary bed to a position at one side thereof and resting partly on the fioor, and
when said movable bed is moved to asuper- V imposed position upon said stationary bed said support will automatically be moved beneath said stationary bed.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved folding twin bed with the movable bed superimposed upon the stationary bed and broken away.
Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of the same, taken on line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same showing the movable bed at one side of the stationary bed.
Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 5 is a stationary bed and 6 a movable bed. The bed 5 consists of side rails 7 and 8, end rails 9 and 10, corner posts 11 and 12, a head rail 13 and a foot rail 14.
The movable bed 6 consists of side rails 15 and 16, end rails 17 and 18, posts 19 and 20, a head rail 21 and a foot rail Two arms 23 and 24, constituting supports, are fastened by set-screws 25 to vertical shafts 26 and '27 rotatably mounted in the side rails 7 and 8. At the lower'ends of the shafts 26' and 27 are bevel gears 29 and'30 tion 36 and at its upper end in a horizontally extended portion 37. The horizontally extended portions 36 are rotatably mounted in the posts 12 of the stationary bed 5 and con lower end in a horizontally extended porstitute horizontal shafts, while the horizontally extending portions 37 extend through for the movable bed 6.
the end rails 17 and 18 and constitute pivots It will be seen that when the parts are 24 are positioned parallel to the side rails 7 and 8 of the stationary bed and between said side rails, while the end rails 17 and 18 rest upon the head and foot rails 13 and 14.
Assuming, then, the parts to be in the relative positions illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 and it is desired to use the beds separately and as twin beds, the movable bed 6 is lifted slightly and swung toward the right (Fig. 2) off of the stationary bed 5 and down into the position illustrated in Fig. 3, with the posts 19 and 20 resting upon the floor and with the side rail 16 resting upon the arms 23 and 24. In moving the movable bed from the position illustrated in Fig. 2 to that illustrated in Fig. 3, the portions 36 of the rotary members 33 and 34 are rotated in their bearings in the posts 11 and 12, while the movable bed will swing upon the horizontal portions 37 as pivots therefor and simultaneously with the movement of the bed 6 from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. 3 the bevel gears 29 and 31 and 30 and 32 will be rotated, thus rotating the vertical shafts 26 and 27 and moving the arms 23 and 24, which constitute supports for one side of the movable bed, from the position illustrated in Fig. 1 to that illustrated in Fig. 3that is, from a position parallel to the side rails 7 and 8 and between said side rails to a position at right angles thereto and projecting beneath the side rail 16. The movable bed is now firmly supported partly on the floor by means of the posts 19 and 20 and partly upon and 24. 4 7
When it is desired to fold the twin beds so as to make a'single bed, the movable bed 6 is lifted and carried back upon the rods 35 until it rests upon the stationary bed as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2, and during this movement of the movable bed back to its original position upon the stationary bed the bevel gears will operate to turn the supports 23 and 2% back to their original positions, that is, substantially parallel to the side rails 7 and 8 and lying between said side rails.
WVhile it is preferable to have two supports :23 and 24, as indicated, I do not wish to confine my invention to this particular embodiment of my invention, as a single support might be used and operated .in the same manner as two supports. In such case a single support, however, would be preferably located midway between the head and foot of bed.
It will be seen that said rotatable members and '34 not only constitute braces and operate to rotate the gears in order to operate'the supports 23 and 2#l,but that said rotatable members also act as guides when saidmovable bed 1s being moved so as to be superimposed upon said stationary bed or so as to :rest upon the floor beside said stationary bed. 1
the two supports'23 I claim:
1. A folding twin bed "having, :in combination, a stationary bed 'and 'a movable bed, rotatable members on said stationary bed :upon which said r-mova'hlelbed is pivotally mounted, whereby said movable bed may beguided onto and off of said stationary bed,
a support movably mounted on said staa vertical shaft .rotatablymounted on said stationary bed, an arm onrsaidsha ft adapted to engageand support onesideof said movable bed and gearing connecting one of said rotatable members to said vertical shaft,
whereby saidarm be moved into and out of operative position relatively to said movable bed. I
In testimony whereof Ilhave hereunto set my hand in presence of twosuibscribing witnesses.
