TOY-BALLOON' VALVE.
memes.
Application ined rebruary a4, 1917.
To all whom t may concer/n Be it blown that l, FREDERICK M DAY- TON, a citizen of the United States, residing at 39 W. 32 St.,.New York, in the county ot New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Toy-Balloon Valve, of which the following is a specilication.
The present invention relates to valves for toy balloons, and aims to provide a novel and improved check v,valve for preventing the escape of air or gas when the balloon is inflated.
llt is the cbj ect of the'invention to provide a toy balloon valve of extremely simple and compact construction, which can be inexpensively manufactured, and which is thoroughly practical and efficient in use.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understoodthat changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein ldisclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
rlhe invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein AFigure l is a perspective view of one form of valve.
Fig. 2 is a diametrical section thereof illustrating the valve disk seated.
Fig. 3 is a diametrical section of a modicationv as applied to the neck of the balloon. n carrying out the invention, there is provided a disk l provided with a central aperture 2 and having a marginal tlange'or rim 3 extending toward one side for housing the valve disk or member 4. This valve disk is composed of a sheet of soft pliant rubber or equivalent l'material and is of slightly smaller diameter than the flange or rim 3. The edge ofthe iiange or rim 3 is provided with inturned ears 5, three of them being illustrated, although any suitable number -can be employed'. A stid disk 8 of metal,
cardboard or the like, is disposed loosely within the flange or rim 3 between the disk 4 andV ears 5. These ears 5 act as stops to limit the movement of the disk 8 away from the seat provided by the disk l surrounding the aperture 2 and the disk 8 acts as a stop t0 limit the movement of the disk 4. The disk l can be provided with anannular cor- Specication of Letters atent.

rugation 6' surrounding the aperture 2 and vpro]ectmg in the same direction as the flange 3, so that the valve disk 4 in being pressed against the corrugation 6 will provide a gas 'tight t, to avoid leakage. rl`he disk l with its flange 3 and ears 5 can be readily stamped from sheet metal or othersuitable stock, and the construction is exceedingly simple and inexpensive. The liange 3 not only accom# modates the valve 4, but also enables the device to be applied to the neck or nipple of the balloon. The device 'is so applied that when the balloon is being inflated, the disks 4 and 8 are blown bodily away from permitting of the passage of air or gas, but as soon as the inflation of the balloon is stopped, the reverse liow of air or gas, due to the tendency of the balloon to deflate itself, will be prevented because of the tact that the disk 4 will -be blown against the seat or disk l with the disk 8', thereby closing the aperture 2. The valve disk 4 is normally fiat, but being composed of soft pliant rub.
the aperture 2 against the ears 5, therebyl' tion thereof which bears against the corrul gation 6, thus vproviding a tight closure.
from being bulged outwardly or forced between the ears 5. l l
The structure shown in Fig.v 3 is somewhat similar t0 that shown in Figs. 1 and 2, with the exception that the ears 5 are osetto further limit the movement of the valve disk 4 away from the seat.
The rim or flange 3 is concaved transversely or is inthe :form of an annular Furthermore, the disk 8 prevents the disk 4- instrucky corrugation providing an outer annular groove, for receivingand holding with an airtight it the bead 9 on the1 end of theballoon neck 7, said ,bead contracting and seating in thel groove.
rlhe present valve is not only useful for toy balloons, but can alsobe used for 're-l taining air in various inflatable-devices, such as oot ball bladders, tires, and the like.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: y
l. A valve embodying a seat member hay` ing an aperture and rim, a pliant valve member within said rim seatable against the seat member to close said aperture, said rim havmg inturnedmeans spaced from said seat member for limiting the bodily movement of the valve member away from the seat member, and said rim being concaved transversely between said seat member and means for the reception of an velastic member within which the valve is inserted.
2.'A valve embodying a sheet metal disk having an aperture and a marginal flange extending to one side, a pliant. valve disk movable within said flange and seatable. `against the aforesaid disk to close said y aperture, said flange having inturned ears spaced from said valve disk for limitingthe bodily. movement of the valve disk away from the first mentioned disk, and said zoflange being concaved transversely between said disk and ears for the reception -of an elastic member withinwhich the valve is inserted.
3. A valve embodying a sheet metal disk having a central aperture, a corrugation surrounding said aperture, and a marginal ange, a pliant valve disk movablewithin said flange and seatable against the aforesaid disk and its corrugation to close said aperture, and a stiff disk within said flange to bear against the vvalve-disk, the edge of said,v flange having inturned ears for limiting the bodily movement of the valve and stiff disks away from the irstmentioned disk, the valve and stiff v disks being of greater diameter than the corrugation.
4. A valve embodying a seat member having an aperture and-a rim, a pliant valve' In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
