Description

JOSEPH J BARTLETT. Improvement in Fire Proof Buildings.. 7
No. 125,163. .Pa tentedApril2,j1872.
Etfiitmm: 1w um: J MM 221M626 fa? W W I ER I I PATENT, OFFICE.
JOSEPH J. BARTLETT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN FIRE-PROOF BUILDINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,163, dated April 2, 1872.
Specification describing a new and useful Proof Buildings, invented by General JOSEPH J. BARTLETT, of the city, county, and State of New York.
The object of this invention is to produce a light, durable, fire and water proof buildingpossessing all the qualities of bad conductors of heat and moisture, which are requisites of good building material. The invention consists, principally, in the use for building purposes of paper or composition containing asbestus when applied to a metallicframe-work in sheets or sections of suitable extent. The invention also consists in the peculiar arran gement of said metallic frame-work.
Figure l of the. drawing represents a horizontal section of part of a wall erected on my new plan. Fig. 2 is a vertical section.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A A are the vertical studs, made of metal, and placed at proper distances apart, duly joined and braced at the necessary places. B B are sheets of asbestus-paper, or asbestusfabric, secured against the outer faces of the studs A, and constituting the outer covering of the structure. Between every adjoining pair of sheets or sections B, I propose to have a vertical anchor or T-shaped stud, G, which enters with its shank between two adjoining studs, A, and overlaps the sheets 13, as shown. A covering strip, D, of asbestus-pape'r is placed over such anchor and tacked or fastened to the main sheets B. At the corners the same arrangement substantially is used,
excepting the consequent change in the form of parts,as shown. The flooring G is supported on inverted U-shaped metallic beams E E, which are by bolts or screws connected with metallic plates F F, that are sunk into the surface of the floor. The windows and doors are hinged, as at a, to the inner parts of the metallic studs.
Though the above-described special construction of metallic frame-work is of advantage, and novel as far as the main feature of invention is concerned, I do not confine myself to any peculiar form and arrangement of parts. My main invention is the construction ofa fire-proof building of metal and asbestus fabric. These substances are fire-proof, durable, strong, and water-proof to all practical intents, and, therefore, best adapted, when in combination, to the purposes specified.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination of asbestus-paper or asbestus fabric with a metallic frame-work for houses, as set forth.
2. The upright studs A A arranged in connection with the overlapping vertical anchors 0, as set forth.
3. The inverse U-shaped metallic beams E combined with the inlaid plates F, as specified.
J OS. J. BARTLETT.
