To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Ross M. BIoKLnY, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Handling Coal; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof. 7
My invention relates to apparatus for handling coal.
My invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view; Fig. 2 is a side view partly in section; Fig. 3 is an enlarged section on the line 3-3, Fig. 1; Fig. 1 is an enlarged section 0n the line H, Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line 5-5, Fig. 1; Fig. 6 is a detail showing the manner in which the refuse is discharged from one of the tables. Fig. 7 is an enlarged section on the line 77, Fig. 1; and Fig. 8 is an enlarged longitudinal section.
In the drawings, the numeral 2 designates the chute leading from a suitable screening device, said chute comprising the upper deck" 3, the middle deck 4, and'the lower deck 5. The upper deck 3 delivers the lump-coal to the rotary picking-table 6; the deck 4: delivers the egg-coal. to the rotary picking-table 7 and the deck 5 delivers the slack to the loading or boom-conveyer 8. i
The rotary tables have troughs 9 to receive the coal to be picked. The tables are provided with the rails 10 engaged by the wheels 11 journaled in up-. rights 12 supported on a suitable structure. The tables may be driven by any suitable power as illustrated and described in connection with the above application.
The table 6 has the inner and outer refuse chutes 13 into which the slate or other impurities are discharged by the pickers, and
said chutes radiate from a central chute 14:
to which the refuse is directed to be discharged into a suitable receptacle.
The table 6 rotates in the direction of the arrow, and a plow or baflie 15 directs the picked coal into the loading-conveyer 8.
The picking-table 7 is preferably, located at a slightly higher elevation than the-table 6, and the coal is fed to said table by the deck 4 with the downward extension 16. The table 7 rotates in the direction of the Specification of Letters Patent.

The table 7 is provided with the inner and outer chutes 21for the reception of'the refs use picked from the coal, and said chutes deliver the coal to the pan 22, which is carried by the picking-table 7 and rotates there with. This pan 22 is supported by. the annular plate-girder 23, which extends down from the table 7 and said girder has openings 24 at intervals through which the ref-.

By my invention, the lump-coal directed to the table 6;'the egg-coal to the table 7;
and the slack to the loading conveyer 8 or 20 as may be desired; and to provide for the directing of the slack to either of said conveyers, the deck 5 isprovided with the upwardly swinging gate 28 as indicatedin dotted lines, Fig. 2.
The coal after having beenpicked in the table 6,.is directed intothe loading-conveyer 8, while the refuse is discharged into the central-hopper 1%. .If it is desired to mix the egg-coal picked in the'table 7 withthe lump-coal of table 6, the baflie. 17 is swung to. the position indicated by full lines in,
Fig. 1, whereupon the egg-coal is directed by the chute 18 onto the table 6 adjacent to thechute 15, and is carried along with the lump-coal into the loading-conveyer 8. If, on the other hand, it is desired to separate the lump and egg-coal, the baffle 17 is moved to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 1,
whereupon the egg-coal is delivered by the chute 19 into the loading-conveyer -2O. As clearly stated above, the slack may be either directed into the loading conveyer 8 or 20, as desired.
That I claim is:
1. In coal handling apparatus of the character described, the combination of a rotary picking-table, means for delivering the coal thereto, chutes for the refuse, a common chute with which said chutes communicate, a second picking table at a higher level than said first table, means for delivering coal to said second table, a chute leading from said second table to said first table, chutes for the refuse adjacent to said second table, a pan below said second table and earried thereby communicatingwith said last named chutes, and means for directinmthe refuse from said pan to the common re' table.
'2. In coal handling apparatus of the character described, the combination of a rotary picl'ring-table, means for delivering coal thereto, chutes for refuse adjacent said table, a common refuse .chute communicating with said chutes below said table, asecondrotary pickingrtableat a higher level than said first table, chutes for the refuse adjacent said second table, a pan below said second table carried thereby with which said last named Chfits w imliliflat a b fli in th Pa of a Pa and chu lead ng r m said pan to said common irefusechute of said first table.
3. 8. In apparatus for handling coal of the character described. the combination of a rotary picking-table, impurity chutes. an annular plate carried by said table below the same,
and having openings therein, a pan carried by said table, said impurity chutes extending down in close proximity to said plate, and a guard-plate carried by said table on said plate.
9. In apparatus for handling c'oal of the character described, the combination of a 1:0- tary piclringt-able, means for deliyering coal thereto, a second rotary picking-table at a higher level than said first table and nonconcentric therewith. means for delivering coal tosaid second table, and a chute leading from said second table to said first table.
