Sucker-Rod Hanger, of which the following is a specification.
. Byway of explanation it maybe stated A that sucker rods of the sort commonly employed in connection with well operations ordinarily are removed in sections each of a considerable length. These sections of the sucker rods not infrequently are laid down horizontally on brackets, the consequence being that the sections of the sucker rods sag between the brackets and become more or" less bent and distorted, to their obvious detriment. Further, such a disposition of the sucker rod sections places them in positions which are more or less inaccessible to a well 1 operator, .since the sucker rods. must be turned up endwise into a vertical position,- before they can be used again in connection with a well.
The device herein disclosed is an improvement on a sucker rod hanger shown in my co-pending application No. 73,746, filed on January 26, 1916.
The present invention aims to provide novel means whereby the sucker rod sup ports are mounted for sliding movement n a substantially horizontal plane, toward and away from the operator.
Another object of the invention is to. improve the cams which hold the sucker rods.
Another bject of the invention is to improve the hannel members on whichthe' rod-holding cams are mounted.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices ofthat type to which the present invention appertains. 8
With the above and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it 'being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the mvention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention. In carrying out. the present invention A there is provided a pair of uprights 1, which may constitute a part of a derrick or other structure. Assembled with the uprights 1 are forwardly" projecting brackets 2 and 3- which 'fi'referably are of shape and include 'ned top 4 and asubstantiall horizontal base 5. The base 5 of each racket 2 has an abutment 6. The ends 7 of the top 4 and the base 5 pass through the uprights 1 and are attached thereto by nuts 8 and washers 80.
The invention comprises any desired number of su ports 9 preferably in the form of T-mem ers each including a substantially horizontal flange and a depending'vertical flange. In the depending vertical flange of each support 9- at one end of the support there is fashioned a notch 10. A plate '11 is attached by securing elements 12 to the deending flange of the support 9 and is provided with a notch 14 which, cooperating with the-notch. 10, forms an opening receiving the 'base5'of the bracket 2, so that the support 9 may be swung upwardly and downwardly ma substantially vertical plane. Near to the free end of each sup-' port-9, the depending flange thereof is provided with a notch 15, a apte'd to receive the base 5 of the bracket 3. A reinforcing block 16-is located above the notch 15, in the angle defined by' the horizontal flange and the vertical flange of the support 9 and coiiperates with the base 5 of the bracket. 3.
The numeral 17 denotes a securingdevice of any kind, which may be a flexible element, the same being connected with the top 4 of he bracket 2 and being passed around the supports 9, when the same are turned up-- wardly into substantially vertical positions,
as shown in Fig. 2.
Assuming that the supports 9 are provided with suitable means for holding the sucker rods 30, it will be obvious that the rearmost support 9 may be swung downwardly into a substantially horizontal position, the notch 15 being received by the base 5 of the bracket 3. The support 9 which thus is disposed horizontally, may be filled with sucker rods, and may be pushed rearwardly, the said support sliding rearwardly on the bases 5 of the brackets 2 and 3. A second support 9 may be turned'down into horizontal position, be filled with sucker rods, and be pushed rearwardly, this operation being continued until all of the supports are filled with sucker rods.
The means whereby the sucker rods 30 are held detachably on the supports 9 will be described. The horizontal flange of each support 9 is provided in its forward edge with any desired number of notches 18. Upon each side of each notch 18 are placed channels 19, the same being superposed on the horizontal flange of the support 9. The channels 19 are held in place by securing elements 20, the upright flanges of the channels 19 being supplied with notches 21 which give access to the securing elements 20. The flanges ofthe channels 19 are denoted by the numeral 22 and are provided with openings 23. It is to be observed that the bases of the channels 19 are beveled ofl as shown at 24, so that the axes of the openings 23 in the flanges 22 are downwardly and rearwardly inclined. The object of this construction is to prevent the sucker rods 30 from riding forwardly, out of the grip of certain elements provided for-their reception. This feature will be better understood when the description of the invention is proceeded with. Mounted in the openings 23 are pivot elements 25 on which are I mounted to swing in substantially vertical planes, cams which are shown at 26. Each channel 19 preferably carries a cam 26 at each of its ends. The cams of the respective channels 1.9 lie on opposite sides of the notches 18 in the horizontal flange of the support 9. The adjacent or inner ends of the cams 26 preferably are curved and may if desired be provided with teeth 27 Each cam 26 carries at its upper outer corner, a projection 28 which extends in.front of the teeth 27. The projection 28 is beveled as shown at 29, in any desired manner, so that it may cot'vperate with the sucker rods 30 which are to be held.
In practical operation, the upper ends of l the sucker rods 30 are pushed upwardly to the notches 18 and, coactin with the inner ends of the cams 26, raise t e cams. When the sucker rods 30 are released, the teeth 27 (if teeth are used) engage the sucker rods 30 on opposite sides, and hold them securely in place. In this connection, it is to be observed .that the projections 28 overlap the forward sides of the sucker rods 30, and prevent the sucker rods from sliding accientally out of the notches 18. Such an accidental displacement of the sucker rods 30 is obviated, further, because the bases of the channels 19 are beveled as shown at 24, so that the axes of the pivot elements 25 which support the cams 26, slant downwardly and rearwardly.
In order to remove the sucker rods 30, a
port in Fig. 9 is in the form of a bar 31 to the forward edge of which is applied an angle member 32having a depending vertical flange 33, and a flange 34 which slants outwardly and upwardly. The flange 34 carries channels 36 held in place by securing elements 38, the cams appearing at 37, and bolts 35 or the like being employed for holdingthe angle members 32 on the bar 31. The construction of the channels 36 and the cams 37 need not be repeated, since these elements are of the kind hereinbefore set forth, saving for theffact thata rearward inclination of the axes of the cams 37 is brought about by inclining the flange 34, rather than by beveling ofl the bases of the channels, as indicated at 24 in Fig. 8. The results achieved in Fig. 8, obtain in that form of the invention which is depicted in Fig. 9, namely, preventing the sucker rods from sagging forwardly out of the grip of the cams.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device for holding sucker rods, a support, and cooperating elements comprising a flange on the support and a carrier one bracket and adapted to rest on. the base of the other brackct, the supports being adapted to be swung upwardly to coiiperate with the top of the first specified bracket,
