Be it known that I, VPETER Nr rAs, a subject of the King of Greece, residing at ashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety Devices for Gas- Burners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to safety devices for gas burners and it is designed more particularly to prevent the escape of gas by the accidental blowing out of the flame by the air from an open window or by a person unfamiliar with the operation of a gas burner.
The object of my invention is to provide a safety device having a hinged wind shield extending vertically upon one side of the tip or burner which is regulated as to the distance between the shield and tip by an adjustable bracket so that the shield will fall to a horizontal position by the slightest current of air striking against the surface of the shield adjacent to the tip.
Furthermore the object of my invention is to provide a safety device having a valve seated in the bracket adjacent the burner and which is normally held in an open position by a spiral spring seated in the valve casing.
Finally the object of my invention is t9 provide a safety device of the foregoing described type, which will possess advantages in points of simplicity, durability, and efliciency, proving at the same time comparatively inexpensive to produce and sustain.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereiafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of the specification, wherein like characters denote correspond ing parts in the several views, in which Figure 1 is a side view,

In the drawings 1 indicates a gas bracket provided with the usual plug valve 2 which is connected to the service pipe in the usual manner. The bracket is provided at its outer end with a tip 3 and a valve 4 located adjacent the burner or tip 3, and the valve 4 comprises a casing 5 provided with a cap vided with a valve stem 8 which extends above theouter surface, of the, cap 6. A shoulder 9 is secured on the valve stem and a spiral spring 10 having one end seated against the shoulder 9 and its opposite end seated against the upper surface of the bracket 1 within the casing, normally holds the valve 7 in an open position.
A support 11 provided with apertures is attached to the vertical portion of the bracket 1 so that the valve casing 5 will be flush with the surface of the support and the valve stem 8 project a suitable distance above the surface of the support. A wind shield 12 is connected to the support by a hinge 6 which is threaded on-the valve casing. I also provide a wing 16 which projects beyond the burner so that the current of air will be directed against the central portion of the shield 12 and throw it from a vertical to a horizontal position.
I provide an adjusting arm 15, pivotally connected to the support by a pin or bolt 15 to regulate the degree of the incline of the wind shield 12. A pin 18 may be inserted in holes 17 in the support to lock the adjusting arm or bracket in the position desired.
In the operation of my device the shield 12 is set in approximately a vertical position, the incline of the same may be regulated by the bracket 15. It will be understood that the greater the degree of the incline toward the burner, the greater will be required the force of the air current to throw the shield to a horizontal position. When a current of air strikes against the shield it is thrown to a horizontal position and by reason of the weight 14 it depresses the valve stem and closes the valve in the gas bracket thereby preventing the escape of gas from the pipe through the tip or burner. After the shield is thrown upon the valve stem, the weight overcomes the strength of the spring and holds the valve closed.
It is believed that the construction, and operation of my improved safety device will be understood from the foregoing descri tion, it being noted that changes may e made in the proportions and details without departing from the scope of my invention.
