LIGHTNING-ABBESTER.
Application filed January 4,
'Beit known that I, ROBERT B. D YEB, a
I Jefferson and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lightning- Arresters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains, to make and use the same.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in lightning arrestersf Waurika, in thel county of designed more particularly for use in con:
nection with a telephone or other delicate in-. strument susceptible to injury by the overcharging of its circuit.
The primary object of the invention is to' provide a device .of this character which is especially adapted for use in; a single line wire and grounded telephone circuit, while another object of the invention is to generally improve upon devices'of' this charac-p ter'by the provisionof an extremely simple,'
purpose for which erence arresterconstructed in accordance with this said base being preferably of rectangular taken on the planes indicated by strong, durablev and inexpensive construe tion, and one which will be eificient andreliablein operation and well adapted to the it is designed. With these and. other objects in' view, the,.:- invention resides in certain novel features} of construction, and the combination and arrangement of parts as willi be hereinafter fully described and claimed; In the accompanying drawingsfforming part of the application, in which similar ref characters designate like parts throughout theseveral views:
Figure 1 is a side elevation invention, show'ng it attached to the out side of thewallof a building and; having a. means extended into the interior of the building'for operating it a j":-
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the lightning;- arrester, showing the various wires or conductors connected to the same; v
Fig. 3 is a rear view'of the base; and, Figs. 4 and 5 are transverse sectional views the lines 44 and 5 --5of Fig. 2. 32;
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, the numeral 1 designates a base'of por celain or other suitable insulating material, I
configuration and having suitable screw Specification of Letters Patent.
(bars 10 of a lightning be hereinafter described.-

iscrewsbrjbjolts by which it is attached to a suitable support, The rear side or back of the base'l' is provided midway of its, width of'which projects a screw 4, the. latter"extending throughthe intermediate portion of a U-sha'ped bracket 5'. Between the ends of the'arms of the'bracket '5 is fulcrumed intermediate of its ends a, metalliclever 6'.
One end of the lever 6 is forked and between ,the furcations ,7: is secured an insulating block 8. Ahandle 9; or other means for opcrating the lever 6 is secured to the free end of the block y'ond the adjacent free end of the lever 6 as 8, said free end extending beclearly shown in'the'drawings.
Arranged in the recess or channel 2 in the back of the base. is a pair of metallic bars 10,- the adjacent edges of which are provided withsaw teeth and separated by an inter:
space. 11. Through the other ends of these are extended screws 12, the free ends of. 'which 'proj ect completely through the base and through the intermediate portions of a pair of double s'pringcontacts-13 and 14,. the latter beingdisposed on the front of the base near the opposite ends thereof. The contacts 13 and 14 and bracket 5 are all arrangedin longitudinal alinement so that the lever 6 maybe brought :into engagementwith either one of the contacts when desired. Connected to the contacts 13 and 14 and to the bracket. 5 in any convenient manner,
but preferably by means of the screws which vmount such n p 1 various. line and local, circuit wires are to members to the base, are bind- 16 and respectively. The
beattachedto these binding posts asrwill In us'ing the device it is upon the outside of the bui ding, the handle 9 beingv exte' dad to the inside of the same through a suitable -opening 18 in the'wall 19 thereof. The ;loc'al telephone wires'2O and 21Iare. connected to the binding posts is connect- The'jiground wire 23; is "connected to the V v referably placed be herein noted that the device is to be used in connection with a single line wire and ground telephone circuit.
Under favorable weather conditions, the lever 6 is positioned so that, its upper end engages the contact 13, and when in this position, the current will be conducted from the line wire 22 through the upper portion of the lever 6 to the bracket 5, then through the telephone wires and 21 and telephone included therebetween' to contact 14. From the contact 14 the current will be conducted to the ground by the wire or conductor 23. Under'unfavorable weather conditions, that 'is, during a severe electrical storm, the lever 6 is moved in the other direction so as to disengage its upper end from the contact 13 and to engage its lower end with the contact 14. Should the line wire 22 be struck the ground, and are short circuited Thisv affords a better protection than otherwise.
In addition to the function which the double contacts 13 and 14 have in cooperating with the lever 6 in closing the various circuits above mentioned, these contacts serve as a holding means for the lever 6 when it is swung to either of its two positions. 7
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation and use of the invention will be readily understood without a more extended explanation.
As various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details'of construction may .be resorted to without departing from the spiritof this invention, I do not wish to be limited to the construction shown and de scribed, other than as claimed.
I claim:
A lightning arrester of the class described comprising a rectangular base composed of insulating material and having a longitudinally ext ling recess on the back thereof, a pair of alined metallic bars disposed in said recess and having their adjacent ends separated by an interspace, a pair of double spring contacts disposed at the front of said base adjacent the inner ends thereof, screws extending through said bars, said base and the intermediate portions of said contacts for securing said bars and said contacts to said base, a plate secured to the front of said base midrway of said contacts, a supporting bracket secured to said plate, a metallic lever fulcrumed intermediate of its ends to said-bracket and adapted when actuated in one direction to engage one of said contacts and when actuated in the other direction to engage the other'contact and operating means provided at one end of said lever.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
