To all whom it may concern:
Be, it known that I, THOMAS E. DUNN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rhinelander, in the county of Oneida and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vire- Twisting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a wire twisting device, and the object thereof is to provide simple and efficient means for twisting wire to form it into cables and for other purposes, and which is so constructed that it may be operated with a minimum amount of exertion and by inexperienced persons.
IVith the foregoing and other objects in view, which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, is being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a wire twisting device constructed in accordance with this invention, parts being broken out for convenience in illustration, and in which the wire is shown threaded and the parts ready to be closed down into operative position,
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts in operative position and with the wire twisted.
In the embodiment illustrated, a base plate 1 is shown which may be fastened to any suitable support, not shown. On this base plate are mounted two castings 2 and 3, the casting 2 being secured to the upper face of said plate near one end thereof and provided with longitudinally spaced upstanding apertured ears 4 to form bearings for a journal 5 of a lever 6. This lever 6 has its inner end bifurcated and through the terminals of which pass the journal 5 in the form of a short shaft. A link 7 has one end pivotally mounted between the furcations of lever 6 and is provided at its other end with a hook 8 with which is designed to be engaged a chain link 9.
The other casting 3 is fixed to the plate 1 at the end opposite that carrying the casting 2 and has a bearing 10 formed therein and opening longitudinally relative to basal.
Rotatably mounted in this bearing 10 is acrank shaft 11 having a hook 12 at its inner end and a crank arm 13 at its outer end, said arm 13'being provided with a handle let for actuating it.
A chain link 15 is engaged with the hook 12 of shaft 11 and this link, together with the chain link 9, are designed for threaded engagement with the wire IV which is to be twisted, it being understood that the wire is threaded through these chain links 9 and 15, said wire being passed therethrough any desired number of times according to the threads it is desired to have in the cable to be formed.
A wire or cable guide 16 is arranged on the base plate 1 between the'castings 2 and and extends transversely thereof. This guide 16is also made in the form of a casting bolted or otherwise secured to the base plate and having laterally spaced upstanding flanges 1'? in which are formed registering notches 18 which aline with the hook carrying link 7 and the hooked end of shaft 11 as is shown clearly in the drawings and which form a fixed jaw designed to receive the wire to be twisted.
A pivoted cooperating movable jaw 19 in the form of a heavy bar has one end thereof dlsposed between the flanges at one end of the casting 16 and pivotally engaged therewith, said flanges being enlarged at said ends and apertured to receive the pintle 20 which connects bar 19 to the casting. This bar 19 has a notch 21 formed therein in position to register with the notches 18 in the flanges 17 so that when said bar is swung downwardly into locking position as shown in Fig. 2, the notch 21 will shut down over the wire which is disposed within notches 18 and the flange 17 will operate to hold said bar against lateral movement.
In the operation of this improved twisting device, the parts being in the position shown in Fig. 1, with lever 6 disposed vertically and bar 19 in the same position, the wire IV to be twisted is threaded through the chain links 9 and 15 until the desired number of strands have been placed through said links. The wire is then cut and the ends securely fastened together. The looking lever or bar 19 is then shutdownwardly into closed position as shown in Fig. 2 and the lever 6 is swung outwardly and, downwardly thereby exerting a tightening action on the wire to be twisted. When the parts are in this position, the device is ready for use and the wire is twisted by turning the crank handle let until the desired number of twists have been formed therein.
The twisted wire with the chain links 9 and 15 forming a unitary part thereof may then be removed by raising levers 6 and 19 and disengaging said links 9 and 15 from the hooks 8 and 12 and these links 9 and 15 will operate as connectors for connecting the cable with the object in connection with which it is to be used.
It will thus be seen that by constructing the device in the manner above described that a strong and simple apparatus is provided which may be easily operated by unskilled persons and with the exertion of a minimum amount of power.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,
the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent-to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains and while I have described the principle of operation of the invention together with the device which I now consider to be the best embodiment thereof, I desire tohave it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative and that such changes may be made as are within the scope of the claimed invention.
I claim 1. A wire twisting device comprising a supporting base, a lever fulcrumed on one end of saidbase to swing longitudinally relative thereto, a crank shaft journaled on the other end of said base, hooks carried by said lever and crank shaft, means for rotating said crank shaft, and means disposed intermediately of said lever and crank shaft for guiding and protecting the wire during the twisting operation.
2. A wire twisting device comprising a supporting base, wire engaging hooks mounted thereon, means for tightening one of said hooks to exert tension on the wire, means for rotating the other hook, and wire guiding means in the form of a fixed and a movable jaw arranged between said hooks, said jaws having registering notches to permit the freeturning of the wire and yet hold it in position while being twisted.
3. A wire twisting device comprising a supporting base, a longitudinally opening bearing and a lever carrying member mount ed in longitudinally spaced relation on said base, a lever carried by said member having a' link pivotally connected therewith and provided at its free end with a hook, a shaft journaled in said bearing and provided at its inner end with a hook and a crank arm at'its other end, a wire guide mounted on said base plate between said bearing and lover, said guide having upstanding flanges provided with registering notches, said flanges being spaced laterally apart, a look ing member pivotally mounted at one end between one end of said flanges and having a notch adapted to register in the notches of the said flanges, said bar shutting down between the flanges to hold the wire against rising upwardly during the twisting operation.
