AND`
LABEL-MAKING MACHINE.
Speeiiieation of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 2'5, 1917.
To all 'whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MAx MEYER, acitizen of the United States residing at the city of Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent and State of Michigan, have invented `certain new and useful Improvements in Label- Making Machines, of which the following is a. speciiication. 1 n i i g u This invention relates to improvements in label making machines. i i
My improvements .relate particularly to label strip feeding fmeansiand arefparticularly `designedfby'u mefforembodiment in label cutting and folding-machines `suchas inthe patent shown in M. Petrocchi, Jannary 9,1917, No.1-,211,489, although ca palile of embodiment'in other relations.,
'.lhemain objectsof this invention are: First, tofprovide-an improved feeding means for label making machines. f l Second, to providey an improved? feeding and tensioningmeans for label making machines. '1
Further objects, and objects :relatingto structural details, will definitely :appear p from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure whichis a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which:
. Figure I is a detail plan view of a structure embodying the features of my invention, only such parts of a label making machine bemg illustrated as I deem necessary t0 show an embodiment of my invention.
Fig. II is an enlarged detail section through the tension means for the label strip, taken on the line 2--2 of Figs. I and III.
Fig.- III is a detail section ofthe tensioning means on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Fi II.
Fig.l I is an enlarged detail section through the feed taken on the line 4.--4 of Fi I. Fig. V is an enlarged detail section of the feed jaw on a line corresponding to line takeni looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends `of the sectionlines.
j Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the frameof the machine uponwhich is a slideway 2 for the jaw slide or carriage 3. This aw slide is,.in.the embodiment Illustrated, 1n the form" of a plate. ;A slot 5 isjformed in the. slideway 2 to receive'the slidefblock 6 which is adjustably 'securedito the slide by means of the screws 7, the slide `having a longitudinal slot 8 thereinthrough which these screws are disposed. yThe' slideblock 6 has a notch 9 in its lower end which is engaged by the anti-friction roll 10 of the actuating lever 11. On the slide 3 is a bracket plate12 havin `an upturned `iiange 13 at one edge provi ing a. jaw pivot ear and an upturned iange or jaw pivot ear 14at its opposite edge. The' jaw member l5 pro vided with downturned pivot ears16 at its edges is mounted upon pivot ears of the plate 12 by means of the pivots 16. The jaw member has a downwardly and forwardly projecting jaw proper 17 provided with teeth 17 adapted to enga e the label strip 18 which is disposed Unger the jaw between the pivot ears of the plate 12.y
The jaw has a. rearwardly and laterally projecting arm 19 which is engaged by the spring 20. A'stud 21 on the under side of the arm 19 holds the spring'in placey with the lower end of the spring restingV upon the jaw slide. The jaw is also provided with the forwardly projecting stop arm 22 through which the stop 23 is threaded to engage the slide as shown in Fig V, whereby the teeth 17 can be adjusted to slide over the label but engage the stitching 26 to ad- Vance the strip.
A `lock nut 24 locks the stop in its adjusted position. The spring urges the jaw into engagement with the label strip while the .'stop limits the closing movement of the jaw preventing such excessive pressure of the jaw upon the label as might injure the label, as the label indicia are frequently af fixed by stitching.
To insure an elfective feed ol the label strip it is provided with transverse row-s ot the stitching Q6 which divide it into 'label lengths. The jaw is adapted to engage these transverse `rows :of stitching, thus 'insuring feeding of the label without *the necessity of having the jaw engage deeply the fabric 0f the label.
Ivpreferably provide in this connection a tensioning device comprising the spindle 27 having a head QS at one end,=carnyingz-spool spindles Q9 disposed on opposite sides of the axis of the spindle. Spools 30 are arranged on these spindles 29 and the tnpeislooped over bothspools, that lis, .it is 4formed .into bights, 'the 'bights being passed over fthe spools as clearly shown 'in Fig. .I'I. The spindle :27 -is carried on a. bracket 'Bland is helduntleritension by meanso'f the-coiled spring V32, one end of-wh'ich is engaged with the bracket` at 33 and Ithe .other with the outer end of'thecasing 3st Which'isthreaded upon the -spindle `and -secured in .itsfadjusted position iby the .lock nut 35. Afsleeve is arrangedon the spindle tosupport the spring. -As the feed jaw reoiprocates the labels 'are :fed to :the holding jaws designated generally7 'by the numeral 37, `and drawn through the folding jaws desigmttetl generally vby Ythe inumeral BS. .Numeral ,'39 desigiates the cutter.
In operation, when .the slide =block i6 is urged forward by thelever-.lilthe teeth17 engage with one ofthe '.tmnsverseaxiws 26 of stiteliingz-and 'carry the xlabel strip 'forward -va distance equal to the -length fof ia label, this ibeing thethrow oftheibloek`6. The tend-tof the labelwstrip is :then grasped byfthe [jaws 37 and the lever 1:1 then reverses. its direction. of movementy earnyingxtlle block 6 .and the jaw 17 rearwardly. .The teeth 1T Vslide over the-stitching forming the name oriindioia upon the strip and-stop immediately` behindithe rows of stitchingx. The label isfthensevered from the end of the stripfand the operation repeated. lI-he tension dev-ice. due to the coiled springBQ, maintains fa yielding tension upon the :strip as it `is'draivn forwardfby the jaw laantl teeth 17.
Asfthe details-of the jans'and 38 and the cntt-er) formrno part of my presentinvention I do not illustrate ordescriloe'the same herein. '.Thesame may be, however, an'embodiment of the said patent'to Petrocchi, No. 1,211,489.
I haveiillnstrated 'and described my improvementsrin theform in which I have em bodied: the-same in la machine `suc-h :asf shown in said lfpatent. I have not attempt-edito illustrate or describe various imodifioations and otlnen adaptations Which-.might be desi-rf able for other` applications of my improve ments as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates 'to embody or -adapt the same as may'be desired.
Having thus described my invention, what EI'c'la'im afs new'and tlesireto-secureby TnetfterslPa'tent, :is:
