Be it known that we, TALBOT C. DEXTER and Ross MEREDITH, citizens of the United States, both residing at Pearl River, county of Rockland, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet-Bucklers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to feeding mechanism by means of which sheets are successively fed from a pile to be operated upon by printing, folding or other machines. The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will simplify and facilitate the buckling, lifting and separating action, thereby increasing the etficiency of a sheet-feeding machine. One of the objects of the present invention is to provide an improved device for lifting a buckled sheet by means of a pneumatic system which depends upon the presence of the sheetin a buckled condition for producing the required degree of suction. Other and further objects will appear in the specification and be pointed out in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which,

Referring more particularly to the drawings, in the embodiment of our invention shown in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, a block or slide 1 is reciprocably mounted in the guides 2 which are integral with ablock 3 within which is journaled a screw 4 threaded into the nut 5 carried by the block 1. On the lower end of the block 1 are guides 6 within which reciprocates a slide 7 provided with Specification of Letters Patent.

an upwardly projecting arm 8 to which one end of a connecting-rod 9 is pivotally connected at 10. The other end of said rod is pivotally connected at 11 to a cam 12 keyed to a cam shaft 13 which is journaled in hearing lugs 14 which are rigid with the block 1. A rack 15 carried by the slide 7 meshes with a gear 16 mounted on a shaft 17 which is carried by suitable bearings suspended from the guides 6. An arm 18 swings about the axis of the shaft 17 and carries at its outer end a frictional buckling instrumentality 19 in the form of a roll. The spindle 20 to which the roll 19 is keyed, has keyed thereto a spur gear 21 which has geared connections with the gear 16 by means of the interposed gears 22. Mounted on the arm 18 is a forwardly presented plate 23 which carries a sucker 24, said sucker being provided with a short pipe section 25 which is connected by a tube or hose 26 with the upper end of a cylinder 27, said cylinder being mounted on one of the guides 2 by means of a strap 28. A tube or hose 29 which is also connected to the upper end of the cylinder 27, leads to a curved pipe 30 which has its lower end connected up with a pipe fitting 31. The lower end of the pipe fitting 31 is open to provide an aperture which is periodically closed by a closure 32. Projecting rearwardly from the cylinder 31 is a pipe section 33 which may be connected up with any suitable means for evacuating the air from the cylinders 27 and 31 when all apertures to the outside atmosphere are closed. The closure 32 is mounted on a pin 34 slidable in a collar 35 and yieldably supported by a spring 36, said collar being integral with an arm 37 pivoted on a shaft 38 to which is keyed a cam arm 39 carrying a cam roller 40, which runs on a cam 41 keyed to the. cam shaft 13. J ournaled in the forward end of the arm 37 is a pin 42 from which depends a clamp foot 43 provided with an upwardlly presented arm 44 having an arcuate slot 45. Pivoted at 46 on the block 1 is a link 47 which carries at its lower end a pin 48, which slides in the slot and serves'to oscillate the clamp foot 43 during its rising and falling movements. A forwardly presented bracket arm 49 carries a. pin 50 upon which is pivotally mounted a socket member 51. A cam bar 52 which projects rearwardly from the socket member 51 is adapted to be engaged by the pin 12 carried by the arm 37 whenever said arm 37 is depressed under the action of a spring 53 which is wound upon the shaft 38 and imparts a pressure tending to hold the clamp foot 43 in its lowermost position. A red 54 which projects forwardly from the socket member 51 carries a shaft 55. Keyed to one end of said shaft is a lever arm 56 in which. is journaled a roller 57 which constitutes a stop for confining the buckling movement of the sheet under the action of the roll 19. To the other end of the shaft 55 is keyed a lever arm 58 to which is pivotally connected a rod 59 upon which is adjustably monnted a' bushing 60 which carries a pin 61. A lever arm 64 which is pivotally mounted on a shaft 63 has its lower end pivotally connected to the pin 61 and is provided with a cam roller 65 which is adapted to be periodically engaged by a pointed cam 66 on the cam shaft 13. lVithin the cylinder 27 is reciprocably mounted a piston 67 to which is connected a piston rod 67. A connecting rod 68 has its upper end pivotally connected to the rod 67 at 69. The lower end of the rod 68 is pivotally connected to theshaft 20 so that whenever the piston moves upwardly in the cylinder 27, the buckling roll 19 together with the sucker 24: is elevated from the pile P of sheets. The operation of this embodiment of our invention will now be readily understood and briefly related is as follows:
According to Fig. 1, the cam 12 has just released a cam rolle1 70 which is journaled in the cam arm 71 rigid with the lever arm 18. scend upon the top sheet of the pile P under the pressure of a spring 72 on a rod 73 which is pivotally connected at 74 with the connecting rod 68. This stage of the operation is also shown in Fig. 3, clamp foot 13 being raised, while the stop roller 57 is lowered upon the top sheet of the pile to confine the buckling action which continues as long as 'the roller 19 remains in contact with the top sheet. An inspection of Fig. 3 will show that the cam 66 is about to engage the roller 65, thus imparting a rearward movement to the stop roll 57 which brings the parts into the positions shown in Fig. 4, the buckled portion 74 of the top sheet being put into close contact with the sucker 24 in such a way as to close the aperture in said sucker. It will be seen from Fig. 3 that the closure 32 closes the cylinder 31 so that the suction through pipe section 33 serves to retain the top sheet against the sucker 24 and as the pneumatic. system is evacuated, the piston in cylinder 27 will be raised and impart an upward movement to the sucker 24 and roll 19. It will be seen therefore, that the buckling action will ter- Said arm 18 is therefore freed to de-' minate and the top sheet be elevated above the pile in such a way as to permit free access to a cushion of air which may be projected between the top sheet and the remaining sheets of the pile in a well known manner. As the top sheet is withdrawn from the pile, the cam 4-1 releases cam roller 40 and permits a downward movement of the arm 37 under the action of spring 53 in such a manner as to force the clamping foot 43 down on to the pile below the top sheet which is being withdrawn. This downward movement of the clamp foot 43 is accompanied by an upward movement of the stop roller 57 by reason of the pin 42 engaging the cam arm 52 which projects rearwardly from the socket 51. The relative positions of the parts are shown in Fig. 5. in the embodiment of our invention shown in Figs. 6 and 7, the buckling roll cooperates with astop roll 81 in a manner similar to that already pointed out in the foregoing embodiment. According to this embodiment, however, a cylindrical member 82 is pneumatically connected with the elevating mechanism in a manner similar to that shown and described in the former embodiment. The member 82 is provided on its lower end with a sucker 83 which is separated from the curved plate 84: carried by the arm 85 which periodically raises and lowers the roll 80. Means for periodically raising the sucker 83 in this embodiment are provided by a strap 86 which is carried by the lower end of a downwardly and for wardly deflected arm 87 and as shown in Fig. 6 is pivoted at 88 and provided with a slotted end 89 which may be adjustably secured by a screw 90 to one arm of a cam lever 91, the other arm of said cam lever being provided with a roller which is periodically displaced by acam 92. In both of these embodiments therefore, the buckling roll and sucker are automatically raised at regular time intervals by means of the cam move ments unless they have been previously raised by the automatic action set up by the top sheet of the pile closing the suckers 24 and 83 which brings about an automatic operation before the expiration of the periodical time.
What we claim is 1. In av sheet-feeding machine, sheet-buckling means, and suction-operated sheet-lifting means, including a sucker which acts upon said sheet and is acted upon by said sheet to control the lifting movement of said lifting means.
2. In a sheet-feeding machine, a sucker normally disposed to act upon a portion of a sheet in buckled position, sheet-buckling means, and means operated by suction and connected up with said sucker for raising said sucker.
3. In a sheet-feeding machine, a sucker normally disposed to act upon a portion of a sheet in buckled position, sheet-buckling means, and means operated by suction an Connected up with said sucker for raising said sucker, said sucker-raising means being adapted to raise said buckling means.
4. In a sheet-feeding machine, a sucker normally disposed to act upon a portion of a sheet in buckled position, sheet-buckling means, and means operated by suction and connected up with said sucker for raising said sucker, said sucker-raising means being adapted to raise said buckling means, said buckling means including parts movable upwardly and downwardly independently of each other.
5. In a sheet-feeding machine, a sucker normally disposed to act upon a portion of a sheet in buckled position, sheet buckling means, and means operated by suction and connected up with said sucker for raising said sucker, said suction-operated means being provided with periodically operated suction-breaking means.
6. In a sheet-feeding machine, a suction system provided with a normally open aperture which is adapted to be closed by and to lift a sheet, sheet-buckling means adapted to move a portion of said sheet into position to be drawn over said aperture, means subject to said suction system for raising the portion of said system which contains said aperture, and means for opening and closing a second aperture in said suction system.

In a sheet-feedingmachine, a suction system provided with a normally open aperture which is adapted to be closed by and to lift a sheet, sheet-buckling means adapted to move a portion of said sheet into position to be drawn .over said aperture, means subject to said suction system for raising the portion of said system which contains said aperture, and means for opening and closing a second aperture in said suction system, the last said means including a normally open closure and automatically timed means for closing said closure during the operation of said buckling means.
8. In a sheet-feeding machine, means for buckling a sheet, a cylinder provided with a reciprocable piston, said cylinder being open to atmosphere on one side of said piston, a suction system connected up with said cylinder on the other side of said piston, said system including a sucker normally disposed in a position to be closed by and to act upon a portion of Said sheet in buckled position, and means connecting said sucker to said piston.
9. In a sheet-feeding machine, means for buckling a sheet, a cylinder provided with a reciprocable piston, said cylinder being open to atmosphere on one side of said piston. a suction system connected up with said cylinder on the other side of said piston,
said system including a sucker normally I disposed in a position to be closed by and to act upon a portion of said sheet in buckled position, and means connecting said sucker to said piston, said buckling means including a frictional sheet-engaging instrumentality connected to said piston. 10. In a sheet-feeding machine, means for buckling a sheet, a cylinder provided with a reciprocable piston, said cylinder being open to atmosphere on one side of said piston, a suction system connected up with said cylinder on the other side of said piston, said system including a sucker normally disposed in a position to be closed by and to act upon a portion of said sheet in buckled position, and means connecting said sucker to said piston, said suction system being provided with automatically operated means for breaking the suction in said system.
11. In a sheet-feeding machine, sheetbuckling means, and means for raising the buckled portion of a sheet, the operation of said raising means being controlled by the relative positions of said buckled portion and said raising means.
12. In a sheet-feeding machine, sheetbuckling means adapted to operate periodically in buckling the top sheet of a pile, a pneumatic system including a sucker for engaging and lifting the buckled portion of a sheet, and means operated by said pneumatic system under a predetermined pressure therein for raising said sucker, such predetermined pressure being possible only when the sucker is sealed by said sheet.
13. In a sheet-feeding machine, sheetbuckling means adapted to operate periodically in buckling the top sheet of a pile, a pneumatic system including a sucker for engaging and lifting the buckled portion of a sheet, andmeans operated by said pneumatic system under a predetermined pressure therein for raising said sucker, such predetermined pressure being possible only when the sucker is sealed by said sheet, said buckling means being operatably connected to said raising means.
14. In a sheet-feeding machine, a rotary shaft, an arm oscillatable about the axis of buckling instrumentality being adapted to move a portion of said sheet into position to be acted upon by said sucker, a pneumatic system connected up with said sucker, and
means operated by said pneumatic system for raising said arm.
16. In a sheet-feeding machine, an oscillatory arm, a sheet-buckling instrumentallty carried by said arm, a sucker, said sheetbuckling instrumentality being adapted to move a portion of said sheet into position to be actedupon by said sucker, a pneumatic system connected up with said sucker, and means operated by said pneumatic system for raising said arm, said sucker being carried by said arm.
17. In a sheet-feeding machine, sheet-buckling means, a pneumatic system, means operated by said pneumatic system for raising said sheet-buckling means, and means partaking of the rising movement of said sheetbuckling means for controlling theoperation of said raisin means.
18. In a sheeteeding machine, sheetbuckling means, a pneumatic system, means operated by said pneumatic system for raising said sheet-buckling means, and means partaking of the rising movement of said sheet-buckling atmeans for controlling the pressure within said pneumatic system, the operation of said raising means depending on such pressure.
19. In a sheet-feeding machine, a sheetbuckling instrumentality, a sucker carried thereby in suitable position to operate upon the buckled portion of a sheet, means for raising said buckling instrumentality and sucker, a pneumatic system including said sucker for operating said raising means, and means other than said sucker for controlling the pressure in said pneumatic system.
20. In a sheet-feeding machine, a sheetbuckling instrumentality, a sucker carried thereby in suitable position to operate upon the buckled portion of a sheet, means for raising said buckling instrumentality and sucker, a pneumatic system including said sucker for operating said raising means, said pneumatic system being provided with an aperture other than that in said sucker, and a closure for said aperture.
21. In a sheet-feeding machine, a sheetbuckling instrumentality, a sucker carried thereby in suitable position to operate upon the buckled portion of a sheet, means for raising said buckling instrumentality and sucker, a pneumatic system including said sucker for operating said raising means, said pneumatic system being provided with an aperture other than that in said sucker, a closure for said aperture, and an automatically operated foot clamp connected to said closure.
22. In a sheet-feeding machine, a sheetbuckling instrumentality, a sucker operative on the buckled portion of a sheet, means for raising said sucker, a pneumatic system including said sucker for raising said sucker,

said pneumatic system being provided with an aperture other than that in said sucker, a closure for said aperture, a clamp foot,
and means for cooperatively actuating said clamping foot and closure.
:23. In a sheet-feeding machine, a sheetbuckling instrumentality, a sucker operative on the buckled portion of a sheet, means for raising said sucker, a pneumatic system including said sucker for raising said sucker,

In a machine of the character described, a sucker, a sheet-buckling instrumentality associated with said sucker, a stop movable into and out of engagement with said top sheet to cooperate with said sucker and sheet-buckling instrumentality, and means operated by suction when said sucker is sealed by a sheet for raising said sucker.

In a machine of the character described, a sucker, a sheet-buckling instrumentality associated with said sucker, a stop movable into and out of engagement with said top sheet to cooperate with said sucker and sheet-buckling instrumentality, and means operated by suction when said sucker is sealed by a sheet for raising said sucker, said stop being movable toward said sheetbuckling instrumentality,
