To all about it may concern Be it known that EDWIN C. DAVIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elyria, in the county of Lorain and State of Ohio, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Shut-Off Valves for Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in automatic shut-off valves for gas burners.
The object of this invention is to provide a valve of this type especially designed for shutting off the flow of gas from the service pipes of a building to a gas burner or jet after the pressure in the gas main has fallen below a predetermined pressure.
My invention, therefore, consists in the features of construction and oombination of parts as described in the specification, pointed out in the claim, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings.

sure is normal. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the valve closed, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section of the auxiliary valve shown double size, the purpose of which is to provide a means of opening the valve after it has become closed.
Again, referring to the drawings, the body portion 4 of the valve casting is divided into two chambers, A. and B. by a diaphragm or wall 13, the said chambers being connected by the opening 14, and designed to be closed when the floating plunger rests upon its seat 12, in the position as shown in Fig. 2.
The said plunger 3 is contained within the barrel 2 which is covered with a threaded cap 1.
An auxiliary valve and valve stem 8 passes through the threaded cylindrical barrel or bushing 9 from beneath and the said bushing has a seat at its upper end in the inlet passage for the valve 8. The internal diameter of this barrel is always sufliciently greater than the external diameter of the valve stem to permit a ready passage of gas between the same and through the opening 16 when the valve is raised in the position as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, and into chamber B by means of port or opening 10. Leakage is prevented around the lower end of the auxiliary valve stem by the packing nut threaded on to barrel or bushing 9 and having an opening permitting the passage of the valve stem at X.
The inlet pipe C dischargesinto chamber or passage A and the outlet pipe D connects with chamber 13.
The operation is as follows l Vhen the pressure of the gas main is normal the cylindrical plunger 3 will be raised in position as shown in Fig. 1 and sustained by the gas pressure upon the surface of the lower closed end, marked 15, so that when the gas falls noticeably below a predetermined pressure the plunger 3 will fall under the influence of gravity to a position as shown in Fig. 2. This effectually closes the passage 14 between chambers A and B and stops the flow of the gas from the inlet, whether or not the pressure again becomes normal.
The auxiliary valve 8 at this time is used to eflect the opening of this plunger 3 by admitting gas beneath the same as follows:
When the valve 8 by hand manipulation is raised to a position as shown by dotted lines at 8 in Fig. 2 the pressure from the inlet is exerted upon the surface of the lower end 15 of plunger 3 by way of opening 16 and port 10 thus causing it to open and in which position it is maintained until the gas pressure again drops below the predetermined normal. Thereupon the operation is repeated. The plunger necessarily is made of a suitably light material, so as to respond to the changes in gas pressure.
In an automatic shut-off valve for gas burners what I claim as new is The combination of a casing having a fluid inlet and outlet, and a diaphragm between said inlet and outlet having an opening therein, and a vertically disposed plunger adapted to be seated by gravity, and to close said opening when fluid pressure is decreased materially below normal, said plunger being normally sustained immedi ately above said opening by fluid pressure, and so positioned as to remain seated upon said opening without regard to the subsequent increase of pressure from the inlet, and an auxiliary valve mechanism compris ing a threaded cylindrical tube extending through the wall of the casing from the bottom and outside thereof, into the inflow space above said diaphragm, and having a utilize the gas pressure from above said valve seat at its top, a valve for said seat having a stem extending through said barrel or tube, and exposed at its lower end for hand manipulation, said tube having an orifice in its side exposed to the outlet chamber beneath said diaphragm adaptedto EDWIN C.
