EXERCISING DEVICE.
Application filed November 11, 1916.
To all whom it may comm:
Be it known that l' lflunns'r \V. L1LJl-2GlL\N,
' a citizen of the United States, residing at Medford, in the county of Jackson and State of Oregon, have invented new and useful Improvements in Exercising Devices, of which thefollowing is a specification.
This invention relates to an exercising device.
In carrying out the invention it is my purpose to construct a yieldable platform and to arrange thereon a figure which is adapted to be contacted by the gloved hands of the person exercising and which has associated therewith a recording apparatus whereby the number of blows delivered upon' the said figure and the force of the blows will be indicated. y i
It is afurther object of the invention to produce an exercising apparatus including a yieldable' platform havinga figure hingedlysecured thereon, said figure being con- 'structed of spring material to insure the flexibility thereof and being provided with compressible parts in the nature of inflated members and such parts providing the ob jeets to be contacted by force of blows delivered thereon by the person exercising, the inflatedparts having tubular connections with the registering and recording apparatus, the said recording apparatus also including a motor in the nature of a clock which is adapted to sound an alarm at determined intervals to' denote the intervals between rounds, means being provided between the l'iinged connection of the figure upon the platform for normally sustaining the figure in an upright position, said means being operative by the impact of force, such as a blow of greater force than that usually delivered upon the figure to unlateh the said hinge to permit of the figure being swung by the impact of such a blow upon theplatform.
It is also my purpose to produce an evercising apparatus comprising a yieldable platform which is adapted to bring into play muscles designed to steady the legs to insure confidence in the equilibrium and poise of. the person exercising to provide upon the platform a yieldable life-size figure or dummy which is so constructed as to simulate the motions of an animated body when influenced by the yieldability of the latform or by the impact of the force 0 the blows thereon delivered by the person exer- Specification of Letters Patent.

cising and also to provide means whereby the number and force of blows delivered to the said figure will be indicated and recorded.
Vith the above and other objects in view the improvement resides in the construction.
combination and arrangement of. parts set forth in the following specification-and falling' within the scope of the appended claims. In the drawings: I Figure l is a perspective view of an exer' cising device constructed in accordance with the present invention, I
Fig. 2 is an approximately central vertical longitudinal section through the same; the
dummy oifigure being in elevation, .Fig. 3 is a greatly enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional view through the dummy or figure, Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view through the same illustrating the manner i in which the figure is supported upon .the hinged plate, and Figs. 5 to 7 illustrate details. In carrying out my improveuu-ntl provide a substantially rectangular frame; 1 which is designed to representa roped arena,- and adjacent to or at the corners of the frame I secure helical springs 12 which support a platform 3 upon the frame. Upon the bottom of the frame and at the oornersof the platform I arrange buffer members 44 which are designed to contact with the platform to limit the downward movement there-' of. when the said platform is subjected to weight. or vibration incident to the movementof the person exercising thereon. The springs 2 are preferably provided .With ad justable means, and also means, such as re silieut plates 4,. are arranged at the sides of the frame to limit the lateral movement of the platform, and similar bowed spring plates 4 may be provided at the ends of the frame to limit the longitudinal movement of the platform.
livotally secured to the platform 3, pref- Pivotally secured piston 9 is moved upwardly or outwardly of the cylinder, in a manner and for a purpose which will presently be described. Arranged upon the piston rod 10 between the outer or upper closed end of the cylinder and the piston head 10 is a spring 11 which normally forces the head 9 in one direction jin the cylinder and the rod 10 away from contacting relation with the trig Upon the plate 4-1 arrange a dummy or figure 12, the same being shaped and proportioned to simulate the figure of a male human being. This figure is preferably constructed from coiled wire so arranged as to assure the upright position of'the figure but also devised to permit of the yieldin of the said figure when the same is subjectc to the force of contact from the fists of the person exerr zising. The spring body of the figure 12 is provided with a suitable covering of some soft textile material. The figure 12 is secured to the plate Sprcferahly through the medium of a substantially U-shapcd metal member or bolt 13 which has its arms passed through the spiraldegs of the dummy and its connecting member arranged at the crotch between the legs of the dummy. The arms 14 of the U-shaped spring may be bolted or otherwise securedto the plate The figure'or dummy 12, at the face and chest portions thereof has arranged thereon compressible members 15 and 16 respectively, each of the soul members being in the nature of inflatable bags but, of course, shaped I to conform to the portions of the anatomy of a human being. A tube or hose 17 connects the inflated bags 15 and 16, and a similar tube or hose 18 is connected with the inflatable -bag 16 and is directed through one of the spiral legs of the figure through suitable openings in both the plate 10 and the platform 3, the said tube having connected thereto a branch 19 .which communicates with the lower or outer closed end of the cylinder 8. The tube 18 is also connected with an air pump 20 and is provided adjacent to the said air pump with a branch communicating with an air gage 21. The conducting tube 18 is provided with an additional branch 22. which communicates with one end of a cylinder 23, the said cylinder having arranged therein a spring pressed piston 24 provided with a piston rod 25 which passes through a packing box in the I second end of the cylinder and which has its end pivotally connected, as at 26,-to an arm 27 w 1ch is provided with a marki g element 28, the said markm g element being arranged over a recordin sheet 29. The arm 27 may if desired be pivoted, as at 30, so that the pivotal connection between the said arm and the iston rod25 is loose to insure the tree \vor ing of the arm. may be of any desired or preferred design and is preferably secured to :11 support and also connected with the said support is a motor in the nature of a clock 31', the said clock having its hand so arranged as to contact with a spring pressed trigger upon a .spring actuated alarm 32 at desired intervals, and these intervals are so spaced as to indicatethe time expiring between the rounds of boxing by the person exercising and the dummy.
The conducting-tube 18 adjacent to the air gage 21 is provided with a cock or valve 33 and the branch pipes of the said conducting pipes leading to the cylinders 8 and 23 are likewise provided with cocks or valves 34 and 35 respectively, and the said cocks 34 and 35 are turned oil and the cock 33 is turned on when the pump is actuated to inflate the compressible bags 15 and 16 on the figure. When the said bags are inflated to the desired extent the cock 33 is turned off and the books 34 and 35 are turned on. The air between the inflated bags and the cylinders 8 and 23 are not sufficient to influence the pistons in the said cylinders,.and the spring 11 in the cylinder 8 is of a materially greater strength than the spring within the cylinder 23, so that the piston 24 is easily influenced by air being forced therein upon the compression of either of the bags 15 and 16, but the spring within the said cylinder 23 will have a tend- T he recording sheet and 16 after the piston in'the said cylinder 23 has been actuated to operate the marking element 28 upon the arm 27. The piston in the cylinder 8 is, it will thus be noted, arranged to be operated only when a great amount of air has been forced therein, such as would be caused by a great im act of force delivered upon. either of the inflated bags 15 and 16, and when thispiston is operated the piston rod will contactwith the trigger-7 so that the force of the blow will cause the plate 5 to swing upon its pivot or hinge and cause the figure to be swung against the platform.
To return the figure to its upright position, I secure to the plate 5 a, flexible element 36 which is trained around pulley or sheave wheels 37 and which is connected to apivoted lever 38, as clearly illustrated by the bags;
'inflatable elements and the actionof such air upon the piston.
3; In an exercising device forbo e1"'s, a'
platform, a yieldable figure upon the platform, inflatable bags upon the figure, 'a cylinder, a piston in the cylinderand having a rod extending therethrougl'l, a marking element connected with the rod, 9. record sheet for the marking element against which the marking element bears, tube connections lmtwecn the. inflatable bags and the cylinder, whereby to actuate the piston in the cylinder when one of the bags is compressed, and means fofinjccting a fluid to within 4. In an exercising device for boxers, a figure constructed of coiled springs, inflatable bags upon the figure, a cylinder, a springpressed piston within the cylinder and. having a rod projecting through the cylinder, an arm connected with the rod, a marking element upon the arm, a record sheet against Which'the marking element contacts, tube connections between the inflatable bags and the cylinder, a pump connected with one of the tubes, 3. gage for the pump, and cooks upon thetube between the gage and cylinder.
