SCBAPER ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. 12, I917.
Patented Dec. 18, 1917.
WITNESSES v ATTohNEY INVENTOR I ToaZZ whomit may comm V .citizenofl the United States, residing at Gig Harbor, in the county ofv Pierce and State of Washington, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements "in Scraper Attachments, of which the following is a specification. Hj
This invention relates .to-a scraper. attachment and the primary object of the inven tionis to 5 provide .a substitute for. v the ordi nary shoe attachment generally employed .on,
scrapers of this character whereby the loose dirt and the weight which is required to be pulled will be greatly diminished during the haul-back operation of the scraper.
One of the objects of the invention 1s to provide a roller element in substitution for the ordinary shoe attachment, the roller be ing adapted to engage the surface and roll thereover so that the necessary power required to propel the same will be greatly diminished and will leave the loose earth to be picked up by the scraper on its subsequent operation. The invention also aims to provide a roller attachment and scraper that will operate to disengage the scraping edge of the scraper from engagement with the ground to diminish the power necessary to haul-back the scraper necessary with the ordinary shoe attachment and also to eliminate the loose earth generally dragged back each time the scraper is operated with theordinary shoe attachment.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a scraper attachment which consists of comparatively few parts and is simple in construction, but durable and well adapted to withstand the rough usage to which devices of this character are ordinarily subjected.
For a full description of the invention and theadvantages and merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, in which;
Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevation of a scraper of conventional construction showing my invention applied thereto.
Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawing, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, and in which like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the scnarnn ATTACHMENT.

of lugs receives one end 2 of the frame 3 h h is design d oz-be s pp r by t everal-vieyvs, the scrapenbladeflk be 'Tl1e, scraper blade B isadaptedtobe moved v. into and outof engagement with the ground. Suitable detachable lugs 1 are fastened to the scraper LA; and are arranged in pairs adjacent eache'nd. offthe scraper. )Each pair roller l'when the latter is in engagement 1 with the ground surface. The frame is preferably of a length equal to the length of the scraper so that the roller may be substantially as long as the scraper as clearly shown drawing. Suitable tie bars 5 are connected to the frame for providing longitudinal braces therefor and these tie bars are constructed from lengths of angle iron having their terminals fixed to the end portions of the frame.
The roller is mounted upon a shaft 6 the ends of which are suitably mounted in the bearings 7 carried by the frame so that when the roller is in engagement with the ground surface the frame will be supported as shown by full lines in Fig. 1. Extensions 8 are formed on the frame and the terminals of these extensions receive the ends of the rod 9 and the latter also is connected to the terminals of a yoke 10 to which the haul-back in the plan view designated as Fig. 2 in the the scraper, the roller will be in engagement with the ground surface and the frame will pull the scraper blade rearwardly in the usual manner. WVhen the scraper'is operating, however, the frame will be raised to the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and the haul-back cable 11 will be slackeneda Forbringing the roller out of, engagement with the ground during the operation of the scraper I have provided-the lifting cable 12' which is extended forwardly to permit the raising operation to be accomplished from,
the front of the scraper and when this cable 12 is pulled the frame will be raised for raising the roller as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and the scraper may then be moved forwardly with its scraping edge in engagement with the ground. This. cable 12 is slackened as soon as the haul-back cable 11 is pulled.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a very simple and durable scraper attachment has been provided, the details of which embody the preferred form. I desire it to be understood however, that slight changes in the minor details of construction may be made without departing from the edge normally engaged with the ground, a
- roller disposed rearwardly of the blade and of a diameter considerably smaller than thelength of the blade whereby the center of the said roller will be disposed below the center of the blade, a frame pivotally mounted on the said roller and having rearward eXtensionseand forwardlv projecting portion lugs carried by the blades beneath the center thereof and connected to the forwardly projecting portions of the frame, a yoke attached to the rearwardly extended ends of the. frame, the said yoke including a rod, the said rod having connection with the frame to permit pivotal movement of the said yoke, and cables attached to the said yoke and said rod and projecting, respectively, toward the rear and front of the said roller.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
Witnesses i I R. H. LUND,
