GLLDU aFd For 1 UTE ratras mrrmarornica treating, fractures, the first force exerted :on the jointed parallelogram member serves' to h 7 bring the device tothe'polnt, and the second f 'pression, tension or extension effect;
like, 7 mg them reduced.
To an whom it may concern." i 1 Be it known that I, "GABRIEL" Louis DUT RD, of 24 Boulevard de Magenta, Paris, in the Republic of France, doctor of medicine, have invented Improvements in or Relating to Surgical and MedicalA'ppli ances, of Which the following is a full, clear,
and exact description.
The present invention relates to an'expanding and removable dev ce for use-1n reducing fractures and maintaining them reduced more particularly =fracturesf0f the limbs and is based on the application of an extensible or expanding member'having a single set or a plurality of setsof jointed links which can be maintained in position by means of a band, strap,tourn1q'u'et or the I or reducing fractures andm'amtam- It is 'know n that when one of the diagonals of a jointed parallelogram is shortened the other is lengthened. [This lengthening at 1 femurtthighbone) the present device is pro- ,vided with'specialmeans of paddingzwhich is fixed above and below the v Wounded limb and serves as a; support for the extremities of the jointedparallelogramslm order'to enable a i suitableextension of this .member to be obtained.
the beginning of the travel,-is considerable, and requires the application of a. comparatively large fo'rce'. On the other hand, :towardthe end of the travel, the lengtheniingbecomes very small, *but the force exerted by the links increases and, in order-t0 move the links to the extreme less and less force is required."
' A jointed member of parallelogram form therefore'bonstitutes"an expansible or, ex-
tension member, the action'of Which-may he graduated at will a cordingto the results to be attained.
:- Arranged m the form of adevice for force produces a useful and adjustable coin- 5 The present dev iceis preferably arranged in the form of a 'sleeve'formcd'by a*s 'et of jointed members which form a par-allele gram the individual links of wh'ieh are ,flexibandbr equivalent. The sleevesmay be 1 arranged 'in'the form of girdles, C a the like-according to the p i he Qlly the aretelaeerrliee pliecbtoja forearm.-
replace, as it is only necessary to. detach the V r band' 'orstrapholding the said sleeve'in position in order to remove the" splint this simple or complex devic'evmayif required be made 1'. immovable by m'eans" of bands or plastered compresses.

? way that the jointed'members in the form 'ofparallelograms may be utilized in a rectil neal series in order to obtain, in a straight direction simultaneous extension or exten- 'sions in independent or-conjugate, convergen't or divergent, parallel series.
When the device comprises two or more sets of** jointed *parallelograms, the latter maybe "-unlted by main branches, -combining the said'sets into'one. U I "yM'o're particularlyin "fractures of the limit myself tothe precise construction de- "scribe'dj'and illustrated. 1 .1
igure 1 shows a device formed of jointed-:2 arallelogr m, 'inxacc'ordance With the present" invention, these parallelograms ibeing 'vvidened' laterally to enable the device tOib .put "in position on a: Wounded limb and removed therefrom; when necessary and with I a minimum of; discomfort to the patient. Whatever ma the apparatus forming the object of this invention may be readily removed for dressing or Other purposes and When in position is practically immovable, and may be utilized if desired in the form of a sling.
As a matter of fact it can be taken aWay and replaced with the greatest facility for the treatment of the Wounds, sores or the like; to that end it is suflicient to detach and refasten the hand holding the device in place.
It may be made immovable by applying to its surface a band or plastered compress after it has been suitably placed in position.
It is to be understood that the methods just described of carrying the inventioninto practice are only given by Way of example,
as other forms of execution are capable of being utilized Without departing from the nature of the. present invention. Similarly the shapes, dimensions and ar rangements of detail may be varied according to the purposes for which the device may be used. I
Claims:
1. In combination, a fracture reducing 'device comprising one or more sleeves formed of jointed parallelograms, the side members of some of the parallelograms of one sleeve being extended to form the sides of some" of the parallelograms of the other sleeve to form a combination splint.
2. In combination, a fracture reducing 1 device comprlslng one or more sleeves each I formed of jointed parallelograms, the side one sleeve being extended and connected With similar extensionson some of the parallelograms of the other sleeve to form a.
members of some of the parallelograms of cavity to protect the vessels of that region 1 against compression.
The foregoing specification of my improvements in or relating to surgical and medical-appliances signed by me this sixth" day of November 1916.
