To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALiCE BRIGGS, a .citi- City, in the county of Erie and Sta-te'of -Pennsylvania,y have invented; certain new :mounted upon the upper section 1 -.1 ofthe; stick and a spring-catch'V 14 ,is;provifdedf on. the upper section lA to holdv the ring or fer and useful Improvements infU'mbrellas, of which the followingf is a specification.v 'Y
Y My invention relates to new and useful improvements in umbrellas, and more particularly to a folding umbrella. A
The primary object of the-inventionis the construction of anumbrella in suchv amanner'that it may be folded to be :carried in a small space.
A further object ofthe invention is the provision of telescoping ribs and a cover which may be folded when the ribs are` telescoped. v r
A still further object ofthe invention is the provision of means for folding thel cover simultaneously with the tel'escoping of the ribs.
IVith these and otlier'objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and arrangementA of parts which will be more clearlyunderstood from the following description and drawings in which,
Figure 1 1s a vertical section throughthe-- umbrella when in raised position,
Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the umbrella in raised position,
Fig. 3 is a side view of the umbrella frame in folded position,
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through one of the ribs, and
Fig. 5 is a transverse section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrows.
In the drawings1 the numeral 1 indicates the several sections of the stick and said sections are hingedly connected by means of the plates 2 which are connected to the sections by means of the pins or rivets 3. II`he sections 1 are held in their extended position by means of sleeves 4 which extend over the hinged joint.
The ribs of the umbrella are formed in sections and comprise the tubular members 5 and rods 6 which telescope within the tubular members 5. On their upper ends, the tubular members 5 are provided with the extensions 7 having eyes 8 therein. A longitudinal opening or slot 9 is formed in each of the tubular members 5 and a projection 10 is secured to each rod 6 and ex- Y Y I Spielciea'tion ofi"Letters1"ajti1t.` vApplication'filed'november 21,1916. Rings ,Lor Y ferrules'12 and rule in raised position.- Brace-bars 15 are pivotally-connectedto the ring 12 at one end and at-the opposite end arepivotally,

ferrule'12, land the brace-bars 17r extend downwardly atan-angle from the ring or Y ferrule 13.l
A covering 18v ofan-y desired"fabricl is to the sections 6 at the lower ends thereof forthegpurpose presentlvdescribed.; Thebrace-bars 15 are provided on the upper edges thereof with projections 19 having Yconnected to tliejribs, but; is only connectedu g openings therein, and cords 20 are connected to `said projections by passing through the openings, and extend upwardly and through openings in the covering 18, thence extend over the covering and are connected at the point indicated at 21. These cords 20 are used for folding the covering 18 when the ribs are telescoped for folding the umbrella.
Having fully described the details of construction it is thought that the advantages of such an umbrella as well as the mode of operation will be clearly understood. In Fig. 1 of the drawings, I havev shown the several parts of the invention with the umbrella in raised position. lVhen it is de-V sired to fold the umbrella, the spring-catch 14 is released and the ring or ferrule 12 slipped downwardly, thereby drawing the tubular sections 5 of the ribs inward or toward the handle-sections 1. The ring or ferrule 13 is raised and, by drawing upon the brace-bars 15, will telescope the sections 6 of the ribs within the tubular sections 5. When the umbrella is to be folded, it is also necessary that the fabric covering 18 be cords 20 which are connected to the fabric and to the brace-bars l5. `When the brace-V bars l are lowered by sliding the ringor ferrule l2 the cords will be pulled and will;V
fold the lower portion of the Yfabric over the top portion.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secureby Letters Patent is:- i f l. An .umbrella comprising a stick, telescoping ribs connected to said stick, a cover connecting to said ribs, and means for foldfing theupper and lower parts'of the cover in lapped relation to one another Where said ribs are telescoped.
' f 4. An umbrella comprising a stick, tele- Copies of this patent may lie obtained for 2. An umbrella comprising a stick, telescopmg ribs connected'to said stick, a cover 'connected' to said ribs, and flexible elements for folding the Lipper and lower parts of the cover in lapped relation to one another where said ribs are 'telescoped 3. An umbrella comprising a stick, telescoping ribsconnected to the stick, braces connecting the ribs and handle, a cover connected to the ribs, and means connected to the braces for folding the cover where said ribs are telescoped.
scoping ribs connected to the stick, braces connecting the'ribs and stick, a cover secured to the ribs, and cords operable by the braces for folding lthe cover where said ribs are Y telescoped.
5. An umbrella comprising a stick, tele- 6. An umbrella comprising a stick, ribs e connected to the stick, braces connected to the stick andl ribs, Vsaid braces having projections on the upper edges thereof, Said projections provided with eyes, a cover connected to the ribs, and cords connected to theprojections on the braces and to the cover. L t
7. A folding umbrella comprising a sec- Y tional stick, ribs connected to the stick, said ribs being formed in sections, one section being tubular and having a longitudinal slot therein and the other section telescoping therein and provided Vwith a projection exA tending through theslot, a ring slidable on the stick, braces connected to the ring and projection on the telescoping rib section, a second ring slidable on the stick above the first-mentioned ring, braces connected to said ring and first-mentioned braces, a cover Y connected to the ribs, Vand cords connected to the iirst-mentioned braces and cover and operable to fold the latter.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature `in presence of two witnesses.
