Be it known that I, ALWIN VON AUW, a citizen-of the United States of America,'and residing in'the borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State'of New York," have invented a certain new and useful Ap: aratus for "Use inthe Manufacture of ooks, of which the'follo-Wing is a specification.

My invention relates to apparatus for use in the manufacture of books and particularly to apparatus for applying hinge tape andfiller strips to sheets fo-r'ledgers and the-like.

The sheets thus prepared are'particularly useful in the'manufacture of loose'leafaccount books, journals,etc. f

If the feed of sheets to the strings a is properly regulated, they are superposed substantially in register upon their discharge to the conveyer c and are carried by the latter in proper relation for the binder, to a piling table f of common type. The strings Z for the upper and lower tiers may be made to travel faster than those for the middle tier, in order to take up the slightly greater distance of travel to the conveyer 6.

Since as above explained, the hinge tapes are of different widths for the different tiers, it is desirable to use ledger sheets of different widths. The leaves formed of the combined sheets and tapes are thus of uniform dimensions and the necessity for subsequent trimming of the sheets is thus avoided. If the outer sides of the guide rollers 21 for the several tiers are in vertical alinement, the inner faces of the rollers. which are of dif ferent widths corresponding to the widths of the tape are therefore stepped inwardly (Fig. A). The guide plates 22 are correspondingly stepped inwardly. On the other hand the distance between the guards 23 and the outer faces of the guide rollers :21 is uniform since the sheets X decrease in width in proportion to the increase in width of the hinge tape.

- As explained in the patent above mentioned it is desirable to provide fillers for the stub of the hook in order to secure substantially uniform thickness in both the stub and the body of the book. Filler strips 28 are employed for this purpose and they may be applied to one or more of the hinge tapes as required by the thickness of the ledger sheet and hinge'tape. As here shown, a reel 29 for the filler strip 28 is provided for each tier. so that it maybe used on any sheet. But it is to be understood that under ordinary conditions, the filler strip will beapplied only to the sheets in one or two of the tiers. The filler strip is carried up from the reel over

30 and 31 and down to the hinge strip as it enters the nip between rollers 16. and drum 2 1. The roller 31 feeds the filler strip to the sameface of the hinge strip as the ledger sheet, butthe,

roller is sopositioned that the filler-strip s spaced from the edge of the ledger sheet 1n order not to impair the flexibility of the hinge strip. rollers 21 for thehinge tape are alined as above suggested, the outer faces of the guide rollers 31 for the filler strip will preferably be substantially alined therewith, so that the outer edge .of the filler strip lies substantially flush with that of the hinge strip. A uniform fiat back for the book is thus afforded.

Inasmuch as the flexibility of the hinge If the outer faces of guide tape should be interfered with as little as possible, and there should be no adhesion between the hinges of adjacent strips, care must be taken to supply adhesive only to those portions of the tape which-are'incon tact with the ledger sheetat one side and the stub strip on the other side of those sheets to which a filler" strip is attached. The pastingv roller, in the latter case, is therefore provided with two contact surfaces 3233 spaced apart, as for instance y a'peripheral groove 34, when the roller is solid, or by two disks spaced apart on a common axis. To prevent an excess of ad hesive being carried up tothe tape, a scraper 35 is preferably used, having scraping edges for the two Contact surfaces 32, 33 of the pasting roller and a tongue 36 which keeps clean the groove or space between the same.

.For'those sheets which are'not supplied with filler strips, a disk with single contact surface is provided, and so located with relation to the hinge tape that it contacts with that portion only thereof which overlaps the ledger sheet.

The sheets may be of requisite size for any desired size or shape of book, since the IOU this roller may be necessary to hold the tape during the action of the cutting knife; but under ordinary circumstances t is unnecessary. It has some value in assisting the feed, by reason of the fact that it presses the tape heavilyagainst one-of the draw- 1ng rollers. 'Butthis assistance 1S unnecessary since the tape is carried forward by the sheet to which it is attached. Again, the'end of the drum )4 may be recessedto afford roomfora heating device, (Fig. 7 by means of which the drum serves the function of a drying as well as a pressure drum. But if the paste is of proper consistency and the scraperssare properly adjusted, .that applied to the hinge tape has become tacky by the time it reaches the drum, and a heater or drieris not needed.

The particular arrangement and construction of the various details of the machine may be readily varied while securingsubstantially similar results, and I do not limit my invention to the precise structure shown and described. r 1
