Description

J. S. MA-CE. Improvement in Vegetable Cutters. No. 125,061. Patented March 26,1872;

WITNESES IMLN TOR UNITED STATES PATENT FFIGE.

JEROME S. MACE, OF AU SABLE, NEW YORK.

IMPROVEMENT IN VEGETABLE-CUTTERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,061, dated March 26, 1872 antedated March 15, 1872.

SPECIFICATION.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JEROME S. MACE, of Au Sable, in the county of Clinton and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Machine for Cutting Vegetables; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon.

This invention relates to that class of vegetable-cutters which are provided with a series of knives arranged across an opening in the bottom board, and which has also a hinged pressure-board for forcing the vegetables upon the knives; and consists in certain details of construction, as will be fully described hereinafter.

In the drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improved machine, and Fig. 2 a plan view of the same.

To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.

A represents the bottom board suitably supported upon any proper standards a a, and provided with an opening, a, as shown. b b represent knives arranged in regular order across the opening a at suitable distances apart, which knives are held at each end by cross-bars at either end of the opening. The cross-bar near the front of the machine is made higher than its fellow, in order that the upper surface of the knives maybe inclined in a downward direction from front to rear, as indicated in the drawing. 11 b represent knives attached to the sides B B, which knives are arranged at right angles to the knives b b, as shown. 0 represents the pressure-board, hinged at c to the bottom board A, which is provided with a guard-board, 0 at its front end, and with guard-fingers c 0 which latter project downward below the knives at the rear end of the opening in the bottom board. D represents a connecting-rod or bar, by which means the board 0 is connected to the operating-lever E, which latter is pivoted in the revolving cross-bar 0, having its bearing in the standards 6 c. F represents a hopper removably attached by means of hooks to the machine proper, which is provided with an inclined bottom board corresponding with the inclination of the knives, as shown.

The operation of the machine is as follows: I

The vegetables to be out are poured into the receptacle formed by the hopper l3 and the guard-board 0 A vibrating motion is then given to the prcssureboard U, by which means the vegetables are permitted to run. down the incline to the knives, upon which latter they are forced and cut by each downward movement of the pressure-board G. The rearward movement of the vegetables down the incline is limited by the guard-fingers c of the pressure-board, so that it is rendered impossible for any to roll beyond the knives. By removing the hopper the knives are easily reached for cleaning purposes. A marked advantage is gained over other forms of this class of machines by the specific construction, which gives a long swing to the pressure-board. It has been usual to hinge the pressure-board upon one side of the opening through the bottomboard; and from this construction it followed that a large portion of the cutting-surface was practically useless, for sufficient room could not be left between the pressure-board and the knives at the hinged end to admit the vegetables between them without necessitating the lifting of the front end of the pressure-board to an inconvenient height. By the employment of guard-fingers, however, I am enabled to hinge the pressure-board at a point removed from the opening, so that the relative movement of the different parts of the pressure-board over the openings is practically the same.

The machine as awhole is simple in its construction and effectual in operation.

Having fully thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. The combination of the pressure-board 0 having the guard-fingers 0 with the baseboard A having the opening a and knives b, as described.

2. The combination of the bottom boardA, sides B B, knives b b, pressure-board O having fingers 0, bar D,leve:-E, cross-bar 0, standards c e, and removable hopper F, the parts being constructed and arranged as described, for the purpose set forth.

This specification signed and witnessed this 11th day of August, 1871.
