Description

W. S. LOBDELL.
BARREL LIFTER. APPLICATION FILED MAY 7, 1917.
Patented Dec. 18, 1917.
FIG. 2.
l/VVE N7 0/? Z W/AL' 5106 a? STATES PATENT onnrcn.
WILBUR S. LOBDELL, OF PHILADELPHIA,
PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO THE ELECTRIC TION OF NEW JERSEY.
BARREL-LIFTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 7, 1917. Serial No. 166,892.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBUR S. LoBnELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a certain new and useful Barrel- Lifter, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of the present invention is to provide a comparatively inexpensive, simple, durable and safe lifter for barrels, kegs and the like, which can be easily applied to barrels or kegs of various sizes and in any position thereof and which can be used for piling the barrels or kegs horizontally or end to end and then readily, detached.
The invention will be claimed at the end hereof, but will be first described in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1, is a side view of a barrel lifter embodying features of the invention and showing the same in application to a barrel.
Fig. 2, is an end elevational view of the barrel lifter.
Fig. 3, is a side view,'with.'parts broken away, and
Fig. 4, is an end view.
In the barrel lifter of my invention there is a rigid rod having a two-part branching body 1, and having at one end a chime book 2, and at the other end a rigid'angularly disposed lifting shank 3 adapted to extend substantially centrally of the head of the barrel a. The parts land 3 are disposed substantially at right angles in respect to each other and they are rigid. The part 3 is shown as provided With an eye 4 for attachment to the hook 5 of a hoist or the like. 6, is a coupling shown as provided with openings through which the two parts of the body pass. These parts of'the body and the coupling may be rigidly connected, or the coupling may be permitted a slight range of sliding motion if desired. 7, is a ring as of metal pivotally connected with the coupling and adapted to encircle the barrel, or more accurately, the bilge of one of the ends thereof.
pon reference to Fig. 3, it is evident that the barrel lifter can be readily applied to the barrel a without lifting the latter, by the simple operation of hooking the hook 2 onto the chime at one end and putting the ring 7 around the bilge at the other end. In
the operation of the hoist the barrel is safely lifted in upright position because the line of draft is substantially through the center of gravity of the barrel. Evidently the barrel can be lowered with a little guidance into theposition shown in Fig.. 3, in which the lifter can be readily detached, even though the barrel is piled horizontally upon other barrels. In piling barrels on end they need not be arranged co-axially and when this is done it is evident that the lifter can be readily detached from the barrel because Patented Dec. 18, 1917.
the part of the chime of the latter which is engaged by the hook lies vertically between the lower barrels in the pile.
What I claim is:
1. A barrel lifter comprising the combi-" nation of a rigid rod having at one end a; chime hook and at the other end a rigid an-- gularly disposed lifting shank adapted to extend substantially centrally of one head of the barrel, and a ring pivotally connected with the rod and adapted to encircle the barrel.
2 A barrel lifter comprising the combinatlon of a rigid-rod having a two-part branching body and having at one end a chime-hook and at the other end a rigid angularly disposed lifting shank adapted to extend substantially centrally of one head of the barrel, a coupling on the two-part body, and a ring pivotally connected with the coupling and adapted to encircle the barrel.
