l l LANDLROLLER.
1916. Sera1No.97,159.- K Y ToiaZZ whom z't may concern.' ,i
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. KARL, a
citizenof the United Statesfresident of, Ber-ea, county of Cuyahoga, andState of.Y Ohio, have invented a new and useful Iin;
provenient in Land-Rollers, of which the following 1s a specification, the principle of theV invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applyiiig that principle, so as-to distinguish it from other inventions. v
My invention relates to land rollersand particularly to that classu of rollers which are known aswater ballast rollers in which water lorsand is used as ballast, the subjectmatter con'stitutinga division of original application Serial No. 46,484, filed by me"Y [treme inner ends 5 ofthe bent portion off,l
" the shell and theV inner extremity G of the Y correspondingilai'ige.` This integral unionv August 20, 1915.
V'The object of the invention .is to provide a ballast rollerconstruction which will be eco-Vv nomical of manufacture and efficient in per` Jrorniance of its functions.'
The said invention consists"` of means hereinafter fully described and forth in the claims.
The annexed drawing kand the following description set forth in detail certain means embodying my invention, the disclosed ciple of the invention may be applied.v
In said annexed drawings Figure 1 represents an axial sectiongwith l .the handle omitted, of'a land .roller embodyingniy ,invention and showing the parts thereof occupying the position assumed vprior to the complete assembling thereof.
Fig. 2 represents a section similar to that illustrated in Fig. l, showing the parts'in their final. or assembled position and also showing fragmentary 'portions ofthe handle in section. Y s
Fig. 3 represents upon an. enlarged scale i an axial section ofthe fragmentary portion of the device, one end'of the axial shaft being shown in elevation. Fig. 4c is a modification.
The illustrated tion` comprises an outer shell l of sheet metal bent into cylindrical form and having its meeting vends welded yin the usual' manner.
Inset into each end of such shell is a head 2 consisting of a main circular portion and particularly set v a peripheral-flange 3;k These heads areinset:` a distance such thatthe end portions` of theishelly lforiginally extended beyond the outer extremities of the flanges whereby suchshell end portions may be bent around and:
againstfthe innersurfaces` of the flanges,as
shown in Figs. 1 `and Such bending operation is performed by' they use of wellaplaneperpendicular to the shells axis and' spcification@ Lettsratent. Barme@ Dlgifg; Original application filed August 20, 1915; Serial 1\1,'o.46,l84.v Divided. Vaiid'this applicationriled May 12,. I

, and-*byv means of suitableapparatus for this" purpose well-known to thosenskil-led inthe.
vThe centrali portion-of eacli li'ea'tlvisi"" formed with :a circular opening 7. through?,` which openings extend the vextremities ofv ani` axial shaft 8. AThese extremities arereducedf to forintwo shoulders@ and-10, Figf; thel i shoulder' 9 being located linteriorly ,off the Y drumvand the shoulderl0 exteriorly thereof. Theextreine en'd-poi'tio'nll 'iscylindrical and forms a journal upon which the roller'beai'ings 120i the'handle revolve. These bearings are heldin place by means of a suitable washer 14 itself secured in place4 by meansof a Cotter pin 1.5. The inner ends of the rollers are adjacent to the shoulder 10.1
That portion of the end, naitfof veach shaft intermediate ofthe shoulders L9 landi engaged upon the outside of -thehead` byl a nut-17. if Adjacent to the shoulder^9 isa y l0 is provided with a 4thre'adltiwhicha-"is .i "f
separating washer 1S and"betwee'nl"thisl washer Vvand lthe` head -is 'located ai*'packingv ringl9. y ,l u
The distance between the two shoulders 9,9,of the shaft is'inade'le'ss than the dis'i! tance lbetween the central portion of the as shown in Fig. 1, that is when the heads are in a state of internal rest.
The parts are completely assembled by screwing up the nuts 17 against the outside so as to cause the Washers 18 to engage the shoulders 9. also to compress the packing ring 19 so as to leffect a water-tight joint and also flex the headsinwardly, as
, also imparts an impression of looseness and vweakness to the structure.
especially Vapparent in the case of water- -ballast rollers and where the interior is not laterally against these heads.
This flexing is completely lilled with water and where, therefore, the latter is permitted to move This flexing movement furthermore tends to weakeny the metal of the joints effected between it and the shell.
In the above-described` manner, therefore,
r :I'obt'ain a very simple and rigid construction without unduly increasing the thickness of the heads.
vl/.Vhilc I have shown heads which are in a dished or bent form before assembling *Y the parts, it will be understood that they may be originally perfectly flat, as shown in dotted lines 'm the drawing, as indicated in Fig; 2 assuming a dished form afterv assembly, the shaft 8y being suit- .ablyY designed to meet these conditions,
especially in so far as relates to the. position of the shoulders 9.
It.v will also be obvious tol those skilled intlie art,.that the above-described principl'e of construction may be applied to a land roller in which the heads, after the parts are all assembled and secured to each other, willbe curved in the direction opposite from that shown in the drawings,
that. is, whereas the drawings show concave heads, convex heads: may be formed if desired, either before or after assembling as: indicated in Fig. 4:.
Having' fullyv described my invention,
' Ywhat I claim; and desire to secure by Letters; Patent is,:- 'Y v In. a land roller, the combination of a cylindrical shell; two end-heads secured in Copies oi thisfpatent may be obtained. for
the ends respectively of said shell; shaft 2. In a land roller, the combination of a` cylindrical shell; two end heads secured in theends respectively of said shell; a shaft extending through said heads and having its ends threaded and reduced so as to form two shoulders located interiorly of the heads and adjacent thereto; separating and packing means intermediate ofsaid shoulders and heads, and nuts on said threaded ends of the shaft and on the exterior of said heads respectively, engaging the latter and clamping saine against said separating and packing means; the said shoulders loeing located a distance from said heads such that said nuts set up a condition of tension in the heads when the parts are clamped together by said nuts.
3. In a land roller, the combination, of a cylindrical shell; two end heads *securedr in the ends respectively of said shell; a
shaft extending through said heads andV having its ends 'threaded and reduced. so as to form two shoulders located interiorly of the heads and adjacent thereto; separating and packing means intermediate of said shoulders and heads, and nuts on said lthreaded ends of the shaft and on the extet; In a land roller, the combination of a` smooth cylindrical metallic shell, provided with iiiturned ends, iiangcd heads engaging said inturned ends, said heads being provided each with a perforation, a shaft passing through said perforation, and means upon the shaft to apply force to said heads to tend to iiex them, whereby the tension of flexure is made effective against the ends of the shell.
5. In a land roller, the combination of a smooth cylindrical metallicy shell, provided with inturned ends, flanged heads engaging said ends, said flanges being also welded to the shell,l said heads being provided each with a perforation, a shaft passing through saidperforation, and means upon the shaft to apply force to said heads to tend toy flex them, whereby the tension of flexure is viio made effective lagainstthe ends of thek shell. Signed by me, this 24th day of February,
1916,. i GERGE E. KARL.
