MUSICAL wms'rtn.
To all whom it may concern: 4
Be it known that I, VILLIAM B. BURGET,
a citizen of the United Statesof America,
residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Musical Whistles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a musical whistle and has for its principal object the production of a device wherein the horn of the whistle is providedwith a simple and efli cient means for releasably holding. the mouth-piece in engagement therewith. V
An0ther object of this invention is the production'of a musical whistle wherein'the horn of the device is provided with'a plate havin 'a number of flan es thereon so as to allow the plate to receive a portion of the mouth-piece and hold the same by means of thefianges, thereby releasably holding the n outlrpiece upon the horn.
Astill further object of this invention is the production of a musical whistle wherein the mouth piece is provided with an extension for permitting the mouth-piece to be attached. to the horn, and by which the mouth piece maybe held when being played inde pendently of the horn.
WVit'h'these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as'will be'hereinafter fully described and claimed. V
In the drawings: i Figure l is a top plan view of the musical whistle. Fig. 2
Fig. 8 is a central longitudinal section through the musical whistle.
Fig. 4-is a section taken on the line 44 of Fig. 3, looking in the direction of the arrows. i
Fig. 5 is a plan view, of the blank from which the horn is formed, showing the plate carried thereby.
Fig. 6 is a top plan view ofthe mouth piece.
Fig. 7 is a bottom plan view of the mouth piece.
Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the mouth piece.
Fig. 9 is a top plan view of a slightly modified form of the mouth piece.
Specification of Letters Patent.
is a bottom plan view of the musical Fig. 10 is'a bottom plan view of the modified device, as shown in Fig. 9.
Fig. 11 is a side elevation of the modified form of the mouth piece. 1
Referring to the accompanying drawings by'numerals. it will be seen that the horn is formed'from a blank and comprises a body 1. This body 1 is rolled in a substantially cylindrical manner, as illustrated clearly in, Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and is joined together by solder or like means so as to have the stem '2 thereof upon its lower portion. l-he hell 3 is also formed from a blank and is rolled so as to have the stem 4 thereof in alinement with the stem 2 of the body l and this hell 3 fits upon the outer end bf the horn body 1, as shown clearly in F ig. 3-. The body 1' although cylindrical at itsouter end is flattened in cross-section at its-inner end so as to form a substantially"rectangu lar structure in cross-section, as shown clearly in Fig. 4.
Theretainiiig plate 5 is positioned within thebody 1 when the .horn'is assembled and is retained in position by means of an in wardly bent flange '6 soldered thereto, or
otherwisesecured, as shown in Figs. 3 and 5. The plate 5 s'provldeduvith overhanging" side flanges 7 and an'overhanginginner flange 8.: referring'particularly'to Fig.
3 it Willbe'seenthat the plate5 is; spaced from the inner portions of the body 1 of the horn so as to extendevenly throughout-its entire lengthfor releasably retaining the mouth piece of'the horn in a setposition.
Patented Dec.18,;1917. Application filed Marchi0,1917j. Serial in. 153,958.
The mouth piece of the whistle comprises a top section 9 and a lower section 10. Since the mouth piece is formed from a blank sheet of'material and is bent intermediate its ends it will be'seen that the sections'9 and 10 are carried in spaced-relation, as
shown in Fig. 8. 'It should further be noted I I that the upper section;9 projects for a considerable distance beyond the lower section 10. These sections 9 and lO'are provided with reduced alined" openings 11 formed therein adjacent the-junction 1'2 of'the sec* tions 9 and 10.
The grooves-1'3 are formed in"alinement with each other and are struck inwardly upon the sections 9 and 10 at a greater distance from the junction 12 of the sections 9 and 10 than are the openings 11. When this mouth piece is played the grooves 13 are intended to constitute guides for thelips of the player, while the mouthpiece may be held inner'endsof the body 1 of the horn are circularly notched, as shown at 14, 'sutlic'ient space is provided for the reception of the lower section 10 without binding or holding the lower section 1 0 of the mouth piece. As a consequence, the mouth piece may be easily played in the usual manner, being held in engagement with the body of 'thehorn by means of the plate 5 and the flanges thereof. By referring to Figs. 9 to 11 inclusive a slightly modified form of the mouth piece is disclosed which is intended to produce more of a flute like note than the preferred mouth piece, for in the preferred mouthpiece a note similar to a clarionet is intended to be made. In this modified form of the mouth piece the sections 15 and 16 are joined as indicated at 17 andthe section15 projects for a considerable distance beyond the section 16. Instead of having the depressed grooves as in the preferred form the sections 15 and 16 are provided with outwardly struck lips 18 in alinement with each other, while between the lips and'the portions 1'7 are formed alined openings 19. Because of ,the construction of the device as shown in Figs. 9 and 11 inclusive, a lightly modified tone or note will bedisclosed over the: form of mouth piece shown inFigs. 6 to 8 inclu SD16. I p
From the foregoing description it Wlll be seen that a verysimple and eflicient musical whistle has been provided, wherein the horn body is provided with a plate havingoverhanging gripping flanges for releasably holding the mouth piece in releasable engagement therewith, while themouth piece is provided with a projection for engaging the plate and flanges, and, furthermore, the mouth piece s provided with grooves and openings for facilitating the formation of notes, which being played into the horn will produce a greater volume, and which can be easlly changed by the springing of one seetion of themouth piece or by the mufiiing of the horn.
What is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a horn body, a plate carried by said body, a flat mouth piece, said flat mouthpiece engaging said plate, and means formed upon said plate and engaging said 3. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a horn body having a bell thereon, an inwardly extending flange formed upon said horn body, a plate fitting upon said flange, means for holding said plate in engagement with said flange, overhanging side and'forward flanges formed upon said plate, said mouth piece comprising a pair of spaced sections, one of said sections projecting beyond the remaining sec tion, said projecting section fitting upon said plate and being gripped by said flanges, whereby said mouth piece will be releasably held in engagement with said horn body.
4. In a device of the class described,'the combination of ahorn body, said horn body being formed from a blank and being rolled to form a cylindrical outer end and a comparatively flat inner end, an inwardly ex tending flange formed upon said innerend'of said horn body, a plate engaglng said flange,
said plate having side flanges formed thereon, said body havinga circularly notched lower portion at the inner end thereof, a mouth piece comprising a pair of sections having grooves and openings formed therein, one of the sections of said mouth piece projecting beyond the remaining section, the projecting section fitting upon said plate and being gripped by said flanges, wherebysaid mouth piece will be releasably held upon said horn so as to allow the notes thereof to pass into the horn, while the other section of said mouth piece will be free to move because of the notching of said horn body.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature. r
