PATENT THOMAS T. HARTFORD, OF BOSTON, .MASSACHUSETTS IMPROVEMENT IN BOOTS AND SHOES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS T. HARTFORD, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Shoe Vamps or Uppers; and I do hereby declare that the following, taken in connection with the drawing which accompanies and forms part of this specification, is a description ot' my invention suicient to enable those skilled in the art to practice it.
My invention relates to an improvement in cutting shoe vamps or uppers; the invent-ion having particular reference to the manufacture of those classes of boots and shoes known as brogans, English ties, womens bahnorals, strap-shoes, and Oxford ties and the object of the improvement being to form the upper and quarter of one piece, inserting or adding only simple lacing or top pieces extending over the tongue, the upper having on each side of the center line a slit into or through which the edge of the lacing piece is inserted, said edge extending under the upper and being stitched thereto. The invention consists in first cutting the upper, including the quarters, in one piece, and then making two angular slits, one on ea oh side of the tongue-forming portion, into which slits one edge of a tie piece or top piece is inserted and stitched, the method of cutting, utilizing stock, dispensing with an unsightly and objectionable side-seam, and making a much neater and better itting shoe.
The drawing shows, at A, a boot made in accordance with this mode of cutting out the upper stock. At B is shown in plan the forni of the upper stock when cut out. O is aside view of one-half of the upper. In all the views, a denotes the upper, cut to a point, b, at the center of the toe, and then widening and curving and continuing back to the points c d,`at the rear or heel portion of the edges c e and dj', which constitute the two edges that meet and are stitched together at the back ot' the heel. Each upper thus cut having this general form, whether intended for a brogan, strap-shoe, Oxford tie, or any other style, and having at the center a slit, g, or apiece cut out, to form the two edges that make the top edges ot' the upper, also has extending from each side ot' the center slit or opening an angular slit, h, (the tongue t' being between and formed by these slits,l this slit being for the insertion of the edge lc of a lacing or top piece, Z, the edges k m being stitched together.
I ciaun- The improvement in cutting out and forming uppers of boots and shoes, consisting in cutting the vamp or fore part with the two quarters in one piece, with a center opening, g, from which opening two inclined slits lead, the bottom edge of a lacing or top piece, l, bein g inserted and fastened at each slit, substantially as shown and described.
Witnesses: T. T. HARTFORD.
