DANIEL FRED GREEN, OF PORTLAND, OREGON.
COVER-REMOVER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 18, 1917.
Application filed March 1, 1917. Serial No. 151,809.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL F. GREEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cover-Removers; and'I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to jar cover removers, and has for its object the provision of a device for lifting the tops or covers of fruit jars which are seated with a close fit upon the jar, and either by reason of the close fit .or the firm seating ofthe covers upon the gaskets, must be pried up with the instrument. More particularly, in that class of jars which are known as Economy j ars, in which the caps are made of thin sheet metal which firmly and closely seat over the flanged rim of the jar, it is always difficult to remove the top and generally the latter must be so distorted or damaged in its removal that it is impossible to use it a second time. It is for the removal of this type of covers that my improved device is particularly adapted, though it may obviously be used for lifting any covers which merely need to be pried off of the jars.
With the above objects in view and such others relating to the details of construction as may hereinafter appear, my invention will now be fully set forth and described, reference being hadto the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the device in the act of lifting a jar cover,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation, and
Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
. Referring more particularly to-the drawings, 1 represents a yoke consisting of a foot piece 2 and the spaced arms 3. The yoke 1 forms a base and fulcrum for a lifting lever 4, the latter being journaled between the arms 3, and extending forwardly from the latter in a flattened and upwardly curved bit 5, the bit 5 being shaped practi- Copies of this patent may be obtained for cally, into a knife edge which may be vertically projected against the lower edge of a' cap 6. The rear end of the lever 4 is shapedinto a broadened handle '7 of suitable formation, and having such a direction with regard to the yoke 1 that it will con veniently approach the body of the jar in the operation of the device. Below the fill? crum of the lever 4t between the arms 3, the latter are provided with bearing openings 8 within which one end of a curved brace arm 9 is swiveled, said arm bearing such relation to the yoke 1 that when the latter is positioned upon the neck of a jar, the brace 9 will. encircle the neck and thereby hold the lifting device in proper position for its operation.
In the use of the abovedescribed implement, the brace 9 is first passed around the neck of the jar and the foot 2 placed against thebase of the neck, where the latter swells.
into the body of the jar. This positioning brings the lever 4 into such relation to the top, that the knife edge or bit 5 may be brought against the edge of the cap 6, and easily worked between the cap and the jar, this action simultaneously loosening the cap and lifting it from the top of the jar, allwith the least possible damage to the cap. It has been my experience thatcaps lifted by the device of my invention may be employed a number of times before they are so completely worn out as to be of no further value.
What I claim as my invention is A jar cap lifter, comprising a bifurcated foot-piece having its ends shaped to engage the shoulder of a jar, a resilient open ring carried by the foot-piece to encircle the jar neck, and a lever pivoted between the bifurcations of the foot-piece, said lever having its forward end shaped into an upwardly curved bit adapted to wedge below a jar cap, and the rear ortion of the lever being shaped into a lifting handle.
In testimony whereof, I affixmy signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
DANIEL FRED GREEN.
