Be it known that I, PAU;JA SnMANcng, subject of the King of Hungary, residing lat Maynard, in the county. of` Belmont and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in yltailway-'lies and Rail-Fasteners, of which the following isa specification. f I
"lhis invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in railway ties andrail fasteners.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of av strong' and efficientl tie adapted for the locking.reception` of railway rails in their operative positions thereon without the employment of any boltsuscrews or other similar hold-fast devlces which are now in common use.
A 'further object of the invention is the provision of a metallic railway tie formedin twoidentical parts permitting the devlce to be cheaply manufactured yfor commercial use,jthe.arrangement bein such that the device may .be .readily assem led supporting relations beneath-the rails of a railroad line and dthen securely lockedy upon the rails against accidental .displacement although readily releasable by railroad employees..

With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature ofthe invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and then claimed.

Figure 1 is a side elevation of an assembled tie of my construction with parts broken away and with railway rails operatively mounted thereon.

It being understood that .the device is adapted for operatively positioning railroad rails upon the road bed, the device is herein illustrated in connection with rails 10 positioned in locked arrangement accurately positioned the proper distance apart by means of two identically formed sections 11 and 12,- which constitute in connection with a locking wedge 13, my complete device or tie structure.
The tie sections 11 and 12 being identica in form with relatively wide and narrow. portions or halves 14 and 15 are adapted .to be oppositely positioned with their innersides flatly contacting each other whenthe tie.` is assembled. The narrow end-15 of each tie is provided with a transverse block 16, substantially rhomboidal in cross section projecting above the upper face 17 of the .tie with its inner longitudinal` edge 18 overlying the tie spaced therefrom and adapted i. to overlie the adjacent base flange 19 of one of the rails 10. f
The forming of the tie sections with different sized halves provides a cut-away portion 20 substantially equal to one-quarter of the dimensions of the tie section and providing a shoulder 21 at the inner end of the larger half 14 of the section, adjacent the cut-away portion 20 thereof. The block-.16 projects substantially across the cut-away portion 2O of the carrying sectionv and'is adapted for sliding receptionwithina corre,-
lspondingly formed dove-tail groove 22 in the adjacently positioned enlarged half 14 ofthe companion tie section. An abutment 23 is arranged upon each half 14 of the tie sections traversing the entire width thereof and arranged spaced inwardly o-f the grooves 22, it being understood that the abutments 23 project above the top 11 of the tie substantially the same distance as and bein similar in form to the aforementioned blocs 16.
An inwardly extending pin 24 in the form of a dowel is carried upon the half 15 of each tie section adapted for reception within a receiving socket 25 correspondingly positioned within the inner face of the larger half 14 of the adjacent section.
