Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Highway Signaling Apparatus for Railroad Service, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to signaling apparatus for railroad or like service, and particularly to apparatus of the type used at grade crossings for giving notice of the approach of a train, devices of this type being commonly called highway signal bells.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide a highway signal bell which will automatically start ringing'on the approach of a train and Will continue to ring for a predetermined time and then cease. A highway bell of this sort may be used with considerable advantage where the highway which it serves is located near a station. .The ordinary highway signal bell operated from the track circuit will commence to ring as soon as the wheels of the train short circuit the track circuit battery and will continue to ring until the train leaves the section of track comprised by the track circuit. Therefore, if the highway is near a station where trains, particularly freight trains, are likely to be standing or switching for some little time, it will happen that the signal bell will ring for considerable periods at a time. This is objectionable for reasons of economy in the operation and up-keep of the apparatus, and more so because the public, becoming accustomed to hear the bell ring when there is no danger in making the crossing, will come, in
time, to ignore the signal entirely. With the highway served by a device constructed in accordance with my present invention, the signal will cease after the lapse of a predetermined time from actuation, regardless of whether the train remains upon the adjacent portion of the track or not.
A further object of the invention is to so construct the apparatus that if the train has crossed the highway before the normal ringing period has elapsed, the bell will immediately cease ringing without waiting for the expiration of such period.
The invention has for further objects such other new and improved constructions, ar-
rangements and devices relating to railway signaling apparatus and particularly to highway crossing bells as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is illustrated, in certain preferred embodiments, in the accompanying drawings wherein- Figure 1 is a View, in elevation, ofa highway crossing bell constructed in accordance with my invention, the bell and bell ringing mechanism mounted therein being shown as swung away from the supporting disk or fixed housing member by means of which the apparatus is supported on a post, or like structure, the figure being somewhat diagrammatic in its representation of certain parts of the apparatus and including a diagram illustrating the actuation of such apparatus by means of a line circuit opened and closed by the passage of trains over the track;

Referring first to Figs. 1 to 10 inclusive, A. designates a railroad track used for tratlic both ways, 13 a station, and C a highway crossed by said track adjacent the station B. The highway signal of my present invention is shown as mounted upon a hollow post 25. The housing for the mechanism for operating the signal consists preferably of a disk or fixed-member 26 secured to the post 25 by bolts 27 and a member 28 hinged to the disk 26. The disk 26 is formed with a pair of circun'iferential ribs 29, 30 between which is a gasket element 31 consisting preferably of a section of rubber tubing. The housing member 28 is formed with a flange oven lapping the outer rib 29 and with a rib 33 which bears against the gasket 31. The bell 34. is secured by a screw bolt to the housing member 28. A weather shield 35 secured to a vertical flange 36 on the housing member 28, extends over the upper part of the bell. The bell clapper 37 is carried on a reciprocating rod 38 guided by a bracket 39 on the inside of the housing 28. The disk 26 is formed with an opening40 for the wires constituting the electrical circuits through Which the mechanisms to be hereinafter described are operated.
The bell ringing magnet 41, supported on a bracket 42 on the casing member 28, is provided with a pivoted a rmature 43 to which is attached one end of an elas ic member 44, the other end of the spring being loosely connected with an armature by a link 45. The clapper rod 38 is formed with an angular bend 46 which is held to the under side of the elastic member it by a keeper plate 47. A spiral spring 48 is interposed between the bracket 3 and an adjusting screw 50 passing through the end of the horizontal portion -t-(3 of the clapper rod. The function of the spring 48 is to assist the magnet 41 in raising the armature 43 and the parts associated therewith. The spring is not intended to be strong enough to raise the armature by itself.
Secured to the pivoted end of the armature 43 is a bracket 51 carrying an insulating plug 52 on which rests the free end of a contact spring the other end of which is anchored to a stud 54 on a plate 55 secured to a block 56, of slate or other insulating material, b means of set screws 57 which pass through arcuate slots 58 in the plate giving the latter capacity for angular adjustment. The contact spring 53 normally bears against a contact spring 59 secured to a plate 60 on the insulating block 56. the
plate 60 being preferably formed with a stop lug 61 which limits the upward movement of spring 59. When the magnet 41 is energized the free end of the contact spring is raised and the contacts separated. This breaks the circuit through the magnet 41, as will be hereinafter described, deiinergizing the magnet and causing the armature to drop. The latter movement closes the circuit again by bringing contact springs 53, 59 together. The bell will begin to ring as soon as the circuit comprising the contact springs 53, 59 is connected with the battery D (Fig. 1). It will continue ringing until its circuit is disconnected from the battery circuit. These operations are etfected by means of a controlling magnet 62, the circuit through which is governed by circuit closing devices E, F and Gr operated by the trains (Fig. 1) and by certain timing mechanism which will be hereinafter described. The circuit closing devices E and G are arranged on opposite sides of the highway at any suitable distance therefrom. Their function is to start the bell ringing, the device E operating when the train moves from left to right (Fig. l) and the device G when the train moves from right to left. The circuit through these devices is normally open. The circuit closing device F is normally closed and is arranged close to the highway. l'ts function is to stop the operation of the bell as soon as the train has passed the highway. The timing mechanism. to be hereafter described, operates to keep the bell ringing for a certain predetermined time after actuation through the track device E or (i, as the case may be. The completion of the period, however, is conditioned upon the train not passing the track device F. As soon as the train reaches this point on the track the bell stops ringing even if the normal ringing period has not elapsed.
The controlling magnet 62 is supported on a bracket 63 Fig. 7) secured to the upper edge of the insulating block 56 and provided with an armature 64 (Fig. 6) to which is secured a brass plate 65 formed with lugs 66, 67. the structure being pivoted to the bracket 63 by means of a pivot pin 68 which passes through the lugs 66. 67 and is supported in a vertical plate 69 forming a part of bracket 63- and a lug-70 on an arm 71 projecting from plate 69. The devices E and G, which may be any suitable form ofc'ated, are connected by a circuit consisting gamete 80 secured to an upright 81 formed on the plate 79, a binding post 82 against which the contact finger 80 normally bears, a wire 83 connected with the wire 72, the track device E or G,,as the case may be, the wire 73 and a wire 84 from the wire 73 tothe battery.
Closing of either of the devices E or G establishes in addition the circuit, which is a shunt from the circuit just described,
through the bell ringing magnet 41 as fol-' lows: from the binding post 75 through the spring contact 53, the spring contact 59, a wire 85 to magnet 41, a wire 86 from the magnet to a binding post 87 through a connecting strip 88 on which binding posts 87 82 are mounted, to binding post 82 which is in the previously described circuit.
It will be understood that the controlling circuit through magnet 62 remains closed at E or G only momentarily or as long as it ma take the train to pass the point at wh1ch the circuit closing device in question is located. In order to maintain the ener gizationof the magnet 62 for a definite period of time, the movement of the armature 64 toward magnet 62 brings a spring contact finger 89 and binding post 90 together, thereby closing the circuit through the magnet, shunting out the track device E or G. The contact finger 89 is secured to a pair of. insulating blocks 91 on the plate 65. The binding post 90 is connected by a wire 92 with the normally closed circuit breaking device F. The latter is connected by a wire 93 with the wire 73. With the spring finger 89 in contact with binding post 90 the circuit through the magnet is as follows: from battery D to magnet 62 through wires 74 and 76; to binding post 82 through wire 77 and contact finger 80; from binding post 82 through a wire 94 to the contact finger 89; from binding post 90 through wire 92, circuit breaking device F and wires 93, 73 and 84 to the battery.
The circuit just described may be opened at F, which occurs when a train crosses the highway C, or by a separation between the contact finger 80 and binding post 82. This separation is brought about at the expiration of a predetermined period after the signaling apparatus is first actuated through the instrumentality ofthe track device E by the following mechanism: The spring arm 44 carried by armature 43 of the bell ringing magnet is formed with an angular bend 95 terminating in a lip 96 adapted to bear upon an ad uStabIe stop screw 97 carried in a bracket 98 secured to the insulating block 56, and a pawl 99 is secured to the vertical portion 95 of the spring arm.- The pawl engages a toothed wheel 100-journaled on a pin 101 supported by the plate 69 forming a part of bracket 63 and a depending angular member 102 forming part of the same structure. The toothed wheel 100 is formed with a hub 103 provided at its extremity with a snail cam 104 adapted to engage with a lug 105 on a pawl carrier 106 pivotally mounted on the pivot pin 68 sustaining the armature of the controlling magnet 62 and carrying a pawl 107 which operates upon a toothed wheel 108. This wheel turns on a pivot pin 109 between a boss 110 on the plate 64 and the angular portion 102 of bracket 63. of the arm 106 is limited by a stop 111 formed on a lug 66 of the plate 65. The arm is normally pressed against the stop lug by a leaf spring 112. Pivotally mounted on the same pivot pin 68 is a dog 113 which engages the notched wheel 108. Spring 112 is bifurcated and oneportion, 114, of it bears upon the dog 113 normally pressing the same against stop lug 111. A disk 115 formed with a weight 116 is secured to the notched wheel 108 by means of set screws 117 which pass through an arcuate slot 118 in the disk.
The upward movement of the pawl carrier 106 is limited by a stop screw 119. The
notched wheel 100 is kept from reverse ro. tation by a dog 120 pressed against the wheel by a leaf spring 121. 0n the back of the notched wheel 108 is a fixed cylindrical block 122 of insulating material adapted to come into contact with the spring contact finger 80.
The operation of the timing mechanism above described is as follows: When the armature 43 of the bell ringing magnet 41 is raised, pawl 99 engages with notched wheel 100 and turns it a certain angular distanbe. At each complete revolution of the notched wheel 100 the pawl carrying arm 106 is raised by cam 104 and then allowed to drop. As it drops the pawl 107 engages the notched wheel 108 giving it a partial rotation. the'arm 106, keeps the wheel 108 rom turning back. As soon as the notched wheelv 108 has been rotated far enough to bring the insulating block 122 against the spring contact finger 80 so as to separate the finger from the binding post82, the circuit through magnet 62 is interrupted and the armature 64 falls backward lifting the dog 113 and the pawl 107 outof contact with the notched The dog 113, which is inde endent of mal period of ringing be fixed at one minute the bell will be rung for one minute after the train passes E and then will automatigig cally stop. llf, however, the train crosses the highway before this minute period elapses the circuit of magnet 62 will be broken at F and the ringing will cease immediately.
In Fig. 1.1 ll have shown somewhat diagrammatically a modification of the apparatus to adapt it for actuation from track circuits instead of the line circuit as hereinafter described. In this figure, the track adjacent the station and highway is divided into two insulated sections H, H, the insulation 123 between the sections being ap-' proximately at the highway. The sections H and H are provided with batteries J and J, respectively, connected by wires 124, 125, 124', 125, with the opposite rails near the outer insulated joints 126, 126. In circuit with the insulated sections'll-T and H, respectively, are the magnets K, K, of an interlocking relay, the magnets being connected bywires 127, 128, 127, 128 with opposite rails at points near the middle insulation 123. The circuit through each insulated section, its battery and relay, is normally closed so that the armatures. 129, 129 of the relays stand .out of contact with the contact points 130, 130 of the circuit, to be hereinafter described, which controls the operation of the signal. When a train comes upon one of the insulated sections H or H it short circuits the battery, denergizing the corresponding relay and causing the controlling circuit to be closed. The mechanism for operating the signal in this form of the invention is the same as that pre- I viously described except in certain particuarm 129 against the contact point 130.

This energizes the controlling magnet 62 and closes a shunt circuit through the bell ringing magnet 41 as follows: from binding post through contact springs 53, 59 and wire to magnet 41; from magnet 41 through wire 136 to the contact arm 89 carried by the armature of magnet 62, binding post against which the contact arm e tates vice versa.

This sets the bell in operation and the operation continues, provided the train remains uponthe insulated section H, until the circuit breaking element 122 on the notched wheel 108 comes into contact with the spring 80 and, breaks the bell operating circuit by moving thev spring away from binding post 82.

.the track circuit through magnet K will be reestablished causing the magnet to attract n moving in this and the same series of operation follows as are above referred to, causing the bell to ring until the train crosses the insulation between the blocks. The interlocking rela tion between'the armatures 129., 129 (any suitable form of interlocking relay may be employed) prevents the presence on the block, H of the trains moving from'left to right from reactuating the apparatus and the closed casing in which the operative parts of the mechanism are housed, is shown in Fig. 2 The disk 26 is formed with arib 29 in which is formed a channel 29 slightly narrower at the bottom than at the top:
In this-channel is fitted acompressible asket 31 the outer face of which is flat ut is compressed by the rib 33 on the hlnged casing 28 when the latter is closed, as shown in the figure. The compression of the gasket forces rims or cars 33 out over the rib 29 as shown. These arrangements make the housing absolutely water and dust'proot.
While ll have described my invention 1n certain preferred embodiments, it will be understood that further modifications might be devised without departure from the P1111:-
ciples of the invention. Therefore I do notwish to limit the invention to the exact constructions, arrangements and devices shown and described except so far as thesameare specifically claimed in certain of the claims herein.

In signaling apparatus of. the character described, the combination with a bell and electrically operated bell ringing mecha A. difierent arrangement, with reference to the gasket. between thefixed and nism, of mechanism for controlling the operation of the bell ringing mechanism comprising a pivoted element provided with a counterweight, means for rotating said ele ment, a retaining device adapted to prevent the reverse rotation of said element, a magnet which when energized maintains said retaining device in operative position, and means operated by said rotating element for opening the circuit through said magnet.
2. ln signaling apparatus of the character described, the combination with a bell and electrically operated bellringing mechanism, of mechanism for controlling the operation of the bell ringing mechanism comprising a pivoted element provided with a counterweight, means operated by said bell ringing mechanism for rotating said element, a retaining device adapted to prevent the reverse rotation of said element, a magnet which when energized maintains saidretaining device in operative position, and means operated by said rotating element for open ing the circuit through said magnet.

In a signaling apparatus of the character described, the combination with a bell and electrically operated belLringing' mechanism, of mechanism for controlling the operation of the bell ringing mechanism comprising a pivoted element provided with a counterweight. means for rotating said element, a retaining device adapted to prevent the reverse rotation of said element, a magnet which when energized maintains said retaining device in operative position. and means operated by said rotating element for opening the circuit through said magnet, said weight being adiustable' on said rotating element to vary the normal ringing period of said apparatus.

In signaling apparatus of the character described. the combination with a bell and electrically operated bell ringing mechanism, of mechanism for controlling the operation of the bell ringing mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel provided with a weight, a dog to engage said wheel. a magn t which holds said dog in operative position, a circuit breaking device carried by said ratchet wheel for openingthe circuit through said magnet, and mechanism operated by said bell ringing mechanism for rotating said ratchet wheel. In signaling apparatus of the character described. the combination with a bell and electrically operated bell ringing mechanism, of mechanism for controlling the operation of the bell ringing mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel provided with a weight, a dog to engage said wheel. a magnet which holds said dog in operative position, a circuit breaking device carried by said ratchet wheel for opening the circuit through said magnet, a pawl operated by the bell ringing mechanism, a ratchet wheel rotated by t e pawl, anda pawl, operated by said last named ratchet wheel, which engages with the first named ratchet wheel.

8. ln'signaling apparatus of the character described, the combination with an electrically operated signaling mechanism, of no mechanism for controlling the operation of said signaling mechanism comprising a magnet, a pivoted armature for the magnet, a pawl operated by the signaling mechanism,
a ratchet wheel rotated by said pawl, a cam 116 on said ratchet wheel, a pawl carrier piv-. oted to said armature and operated by said cam, a pawl on said pawl carrier, a second ratchet wheel operated by said last named pawl and provided with a counterweight, a 120 dog pivoted to said armature which operatively engages said weighted ratchet wheel A when said magnet is energized. and a circuit breaking device on said weighted ratchet wheel adapted to break the circuit through said magnet.

In signaling apparatus of the character described, the combination with a bell, of a clapper for the same, a reciprocating rod on which said clapper is mounted, an electro- 13c l magnet provided with an armature and with circuit breaking spring contacts for reciprocating said rod, and a spring attached to said armature Which assists said magnet in raising said armature.
10. In signaling apparatus of the character described, the combination with a bell, of
a clapper for the same, a reciprocating rod on which said clapper is mounted, an electro-magnet provided with an armature and with circuit breaking spring contacts for reciprocating said rod, and an elasticspring member secured at one end to said armature with its free end attached to said rod.

In signaling apparatus of the character described, the combination with a bell, of a clapper for the same, a reciprocating rod on which said clapper is mounted, an electro-magnet provided with an armature and with circuit breaking spring contacts for reciprocating said rod, an elastic spring member secured at one end to said armature with its free end attached to said rod, and a spring interposed between a stationary part of said apparatus'and said rod so as to assist the magnet in raising said armature.
12. In signaling apparatus of the character described, the combination with a bell, of a clapper for the same, a reciprocating rod on which said clapper is mounted, an electro-magnet provided with an armature and with circuit breaking spring contacts and means for pivoting said armature to said rod for reciprocating said rod, a pawl carried log said armature, and mechanism operated y said pawl which is adapted to open the circuit of said bell ringing magnet after the bell has been rung for a certain period.

In signaling apparatus of the character described, the combination with an electrically operated signaling mechanism, of mechanism for controlling the operation of said signaling mechanism comprising a magnet, at pivoted armature for the magnet, a pawl operated by the signaling mechanism, a ratchet wheel rotated by said pawl, a cam on said ratchet wheel, a pawl carrier pivoted to said armature and operated by said cam, a pawl on said pawl carrier, a second ratchet wheel operated by said last named pawl and provided with a counterweight, a dog pivoted to sa1d armature which operatively engages said weighted ratchet wheel when said magnet is energized, a circuit breaking device on said weighted ratchet Wheel adapted to break the circuit through said magnet, and a circuit closing device adapted to be operated to close the circuit through said magnet. r I

In signaling apparatus of the character described, the combination with a bell and electrically operated bell-ringing mechanism, of a controlling magnet, a circuitcloser shunted across the bell circuit and operated by said magnet, a momentarily operated circuit-closing device for closing both the circuit through the bell and the magnet, a circuit-breaking device in circuit with the magnet and timing mechanism operated by said bell-ringing mechanism for breaking the circuit through the magnet after a predetermined period of time.

In a signaling apparatus of the character described, the combination With a bell and electrically-operated bell-ringing mechanism, a circuit closer, a controlling magnet operating said circuit closer, a circuit shunted across the bell circuit, a device for openin said circuit, a momentarily operated circult-closing device for closlng the circuit through the bell and the circuit through the magnet and said device for opening the cirwit, a normally closed circuit-breaking device in circuit with said magnet and with said bell, and a timing device operated by said bell-ringing device for operating said device for opemng the circuit after a predetermined period of time.
