IM PR OVEMENT IN THE MANUFACTURE OF BOXES.
. Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 124,997, dated March 26, 1872.
SPECIFICATION.
To whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALPHEUs N. ALLEN, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of lllinois, have invented certain Improvements in the Method of Making Boxes for containing matches and for other purposes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying explanatory drawing, which, together with the letters and figures marked thereon, form part of this specification, and in which- Figure l is a view, unfolded, of the strawboard to form the bottom, sides, and lids of the boxes. Fig. 2 is atop or plan View of a series of the boxes not yet sawn asunder. Fig. 3 is a section on the line ac .n of Fig. 2. Fig. 4. is a section on the line 3 y of Fig. 2.
Like letters of reference made use of in the several figures indicate like parts.
N cttnre of the Invention. This invention relates to an improved method of manufacturing boxes for containin g matches v and for other purposes; and the invention consists in making the boxes of flexible strawboard, or similar substance, folded to form the sides and top and bottom, while the ends are The straw-board is cut in a row. The-end pieces, made square, are then glued in to form partitions, dividing this long folded straw-board into the desired number of boxes. After the glue has become set and hard the whole is sawed asunder, dividing each partition centrally, so that it will form an end for each adjoining box, as will be hereinafter more fully explained.
General Description. In the drawing, A is the lid or cover, B the bottom, 0 the front side, and D the back of the box; all made of straw-board or other flexible material, and made of one piece. This straw-board is cut in long strips to form several boxes, and folded at the places indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 of the drawing, which shows a pattern to form three boxes at once. E E are the outside end pieces, and F F the inside or thick end pieces. The straw-board is folded to form a long square tube, and the thin end pieces E glued inthe tube at each extremity, gluing only the bottom and sides thereof. The thick end pieces or partitions F, made to fit the tube, are also glued therein at stated intervals in like manner, and the whole placed in suitable clamps to allow the glue to harden and set. After the glue has become set the tube, now consisting of a series of compartments with a common lid and continuous sides and bottom, is taken to a circular saw and sawn through at the center of each partition F, thus dividing the tube into a number of perfect boxes, each of the pieces F forming an end of two boxes.
This process enables the boxes to be made at a rapid and cheap rate, and furnishes strong durable boxes, especially adapted for containing matches.
Claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s v The method or process of making boxes, substantially as above described.
ALPHEUS N. ALLEN.
