To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK O. Gns'rArson and EDWARD C. GUsrArsoN, citizens of the United States, residing, in the city of Portland, county of Multnomah, and rltate of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Trips for Printinglresses, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to roller tripsfor printing presses, and more particularly to movable bearing devices adapted to be operated, after the ink rollers have passed once over the printing form, for the purpose of supporting said ink rollers free from con tact with said printing form on their return trip, and thereby prevent any regathering of the ink from said form by said rollers on their return trip.
lhe invention, broadly considered, comprises bearing members movably associated with the form for a printing press, at opposite sides thereof, and adapted when in one position to rest flush with or below the printing surface of the form, and when in their operating positions to project above said printing surface, whereby to carry said ink rollers above and free from engagement with said printing surface. In the preferred embodiment of the invention, we provide a device which is automatically tripped after the ink rollers have passed once over the form. We also prefer to provide a construction in which the ink rollers themselves operate to do the tripping. We also have provided a device which is automatically set with each impression taken by the press.
in order that others may fully understand our invention, we have shown in the accompanying sheet of drawings, one practical embodiment thereof which we will now describe.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a form with our invention applied thereto;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary cross sectional view taken on the line 23 of Fig. 1, showing the device set so that the ink rollers, indicated'in dotted lines, will run over and ink the form, as indicated;
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the device tripped, or in its raised position, so as to hold the rollers above the form, in the manner indicated, on their return trip;
Fig. i is a side elevation of the device apart from the form, with its side plate removed to show the interior construction, the bearing trip member being set, as in s- 2;
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing the hearing member tripped or raised, as in Fig. 3; and

Referring now to thedrawings, Fig. 1, A designates a frame or chase, with a form l3, clamped therein, in the usual manner, and with our invention also secured in place therein, and designated CC, at the opposite ends or sides thereof.
The embodiment of the invention here shown for purposes of illustration comprises a long body composed of two plate members 1 and 52, with a slide plate 3, slidably. mounted therebetween, and a trip bearing member 4 mounted thereupon and adapted to be raised. and lowered in a manner now to be described. The plate 1 is recessed in its inner face to receive the slide plate 3, as indicated, which is provided with two inclined slideways 33=*, adapted to slidably receive the two guide members 4l=*-l upon the trip bearing member l. Said bearing member l is also providcdwith two straight pins, as i i .slidably seated between the body plates 1 and 2, and provided with coiled springs, as 4l-i, normally operating to move the bearing member l to raised po sition. Eaid trip bearing member 4t is also provided with a spring-aetuated plunger 5, which fits over the slide plate 3 at its lower end and is provided thereat with a short pin or screw, as 6, adapted to move vertically in the notch 3 in the slide plate 8, the upper end of which notch is formed into a round seat 3 into which said pin 6 fits when in its uppermost position. We are aware that changes can be made in the embodiment of the invention as here illustrated and described without departing from the spirit of the invention, and we do not, therefore, limitthe invention to the particular embodiment here shown for illustrative purposes only, except as we may be limitediby the hereto appended claims.

1. A roller trip for printing presses comprising one or more independent, detached devices adapted to be set .bodily into a portable printing form, and each provided with a movable bearing member, means for holding said bearing member in an inoperative position, and means adapted to be released by rollers passing thereover for auton'iaticallymoving said bearing member into an operative position.
2. A roller trip for printing. presses comprising a pair .of Self-contained members adapted to be inserted in a printing form at oppositesidesthereof and each having movable bearingmembers, means for holding said bearing members in an inoperative position, means tending to move said bearing members into operative positions, and tripping means for releasing said bearing members, whereby they can be moved into operative positions, said tripping means being adapted to be operated by said rollers.
3. Incombination with a detachable frame for holding a printing form, a roller trip adapted to be inserted in said frame, together with said printing form, said trip comprising two bearing members movably supported, means for holding said bearing members in inoperative positions within said frame, means normally tending to move said bearing. members into operating positions, a tripping mechanism controlling the means for holding saidbearing members in inoperative positions, said tripping mechanism projecting into the path of said rollers,
whereby to be engaged and tripped thereby.

5. A roller trip for printing presses co1nprising a body, a bearing member movably mounted therein, means for locking said bearing member in its set or inoperative position, means tending to move said bearing member into its operative position, means for locking it in its operative position, means for tripping or releasing sai d bearingmember from its inoperative position, and means for releasing it from its operative position.
6. A roller trip for printing presses comprising a body, a bearing member movably mounted therein, means operating to move said member into its operative position, a slide member for locking said bearing member in its operating inoperating positions, and means for releasing said slide member.
7. A roller trip of the character referred to comprising a body, a bearing member movably mounted therein and movable to and from said body, a slide plate slidably mounted in said body and having operative connections with said bearing member,means operating to move said bearing member into its operating position, a trip member for holding said slide plate and said bearing member in inoperating positions, and a trip member for holding said slide plate and said bearing member in their tripped or operating positions.
8. In a roller trip of the character described, a bearing member adapted to be moved into operative and inoperative positions, a slide member having operating connections with said bearing member and adapted to move at an angle therewith, said slide member being adapted to lock said bearing member in either of its positions, means operating to automatically move said members in one direction, and a trip member for holding them against said movement.
9. In a roller trip of the character referred to, a body, a bearing member movably mounted therein and movable to and from said body, a slide member movable longitudinally of said body and having operating connections with said bearing member, means operating to automatically move said bearing member from said body, means for locking said bearing member and slide member against movement from either of their positions, and ,means for releasing them, substantially as described.
10. A roller trip of the character referred to comprising a body adapted to be clamped in a printing form, a bearing member mo unted thereupon with portions projecting into said body and being movable toward and from said body, a slide plate within said body, movable longitudinally thereof and having interlocking connections with said bearing member, springs for normally moving said bearing member from said body, a trip member for locking said slide member in one position with said bearing member in inoperative position, and a trip member for locking said slide member in its other position with said bearing member in its 0perating position, substantially as described.
11. A roller trip of the character referred to comprising a body adapted to be secured in a printing form, a bearing member mounted thereupon with portions projecting into said body and being movable to and from said body, means operating to move said bearing member away from said body, a slide member within said body and having interfitting connections with the projecting portions of said bearing member, said slide member being slidable longitudinally of said body and at right angles to the movement of said bearing member, a trip lever projecting from said body and adaptedto lock said slide member in one position, and a trip member projecting above said bearing member and adapted to lock said slide member in its other position, substantially as described.
12. In combination with a printing press and the ink rollers thereof, of roller trip devices having bearing members adapted to be moved into and out of positions for supporting the ink rollers, with trip levers operable by said rollers to release said bearing members, and trip devices operable by said press for releasing and moving said bearing members into inoperative positions, substan tially as described.
13. In a roller trip device of the character described, the combination with movable bearing members and means for moving the same, of a locking device projecting slightly beyond said bearing member and adapted to be operated to release said bearing member by pressure thereupon, substantially as described.
14.
