Description

LEONARD AARON IPI-IELPS, 0F PEORIA, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO AVERY COMPNY, 0F PEORIA, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION 0F ILLINOIS.
CLUTCH-TRIPPING DEVICE.
Application filed January 6, 1915.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that l, LEONARD A. PrinLPs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clutch-Tripping Devices, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the invention serves to prevent such accidental dropping of the hammer by providing a foot edal and a manually operated lock for the foot pedal making it necessary to use both feet to release the clutch tripping pedal, thereby limiting the possibilities of the accidental dropping of the hammer.
For details of construction of this invention reference may be had to the following drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a trip haminer showing the improved clutch tripping device.
F ig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2--2 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged view of the clutch tripping device, and
Fig. 4 is a sectional view on thc line 4-4 of Fig. 3.
A conventional trip hammer is shown in the drawings, the base being indicated by the numeral 1, the hammer by the numeral 2 and the side hammer supports and guides Iby the numeral 3. A clutch is shown disengaged at which may be of any -well known type. 6 and 7 represent, .respectively the drive belt and power receiving'shaft, and when the two parts of the clutch 5 are engaged, it will be seen that power is transmitted through the shaft 8 and the gears 9 to the shaft 10, causing the same to rotate, and thereby raise and lower the hammer through the resultant revolution of the crank member 11. n
At the base of the hammer, pivoted at 12,.
Specification of Letters Patent. t

Serial No. 831.
there is the foot pedal 13, which is held locked in position by the toothed segment on the lever or bell crank 14. This bell crank is preferably in a box or casing 15 below the surface of the floor, and is pivotally supported at 16 upon the brackets 17, 17 on either side of the bell crank. At the other end of the bell crank there is provided the vertical guides 18, 18 these serving to prevent any lateral movement of the bell crank. The foot pedal 19, which extends a little above the ioor of the shop is in contact, at its lower end with the bell crank 14 and serves as a means, by pressing down upon it, to disengage the toothed segment from the pedal 13. The spring 20 serves to restore the foot pedal 19 and the bell crank 14 to their original positions.
vPivoted to the end of the foot pedal 13 is a rod 21 which is pivoted at its upper end to the bell crank 22, which in turn is pivoted to the clutch shifting rod 23.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the operation of this invention is as follows:
When in locked position the entire apparatus is as shown in F ig. 1, the clutch tripping device being locked into position by the teeth on the bell crank 14. To unlock the foot lever 13 the operator pushes down with one foot on the foot pedal 19 thereby forcing the teeth of the bell crank from out of contact with the foot lever 13. With his other foot the operator presses down upon the foot pedal 13, which, being pivoted at 12, forces rod 21 upward and the clutch shifting rod 23 inward, thereby engaging the clutch member 5 and raising and lowering the hammer as described above.
When it is desired to discontinue the operation of the hammer, pressure is removed from the foot pedal 13, the spring 24 thereby causing the foot pedal 13, the rod 21, bell crank 22 and rod 23 to resume their original positions thereby disengaging the clutch and stopping the hammer. After the foot pedal 13 resumes its original position pressure is removed from the foot pedal 19, the spring 20 forcing the teeth of the bell crank 14, into engagement with the foot pedal 13, thereby locking the same.
Thus it will be seen, that, inasmuch as it requires the use of both feet, not simultaneously, but one after the other, the danger of the accidental dropping of the hammer is minimized.
What I claim is: c y 1. AThe Ycombination of a clutch, a vertically/movable foot pedal connected with the clutch and adapted to be located near a Y floor, a casing adapted to he positioned with its top flush with the surface of the floor7 a-'lever pivoted in the casing and extending upward through an opening therein to' engage the pedal and hold it in a position With the clutch disengaged, and a foot controlled device extending upward through an opening in the casing and servingto inove the lever to release the pedal.
2.7The combination of a clutch, a Vertically movable foot pedal connected With the clutch and adapted to be located near a floor,` a Casing adapted to be positioned With Copies of this patent may be obtained for its top flush with the surface of the floor, a bell crank pivotcd in the casing and haring one of its arnis extending upward through an opening therein and provided with notches to engage the pedal and hold it in any of several positions with the clutch disengaged, and a foot controlled device extending upward through an opening` in the casing and serving to move the hell crank to release the pedal.
In testimony whereof, I ailix in)v signature, in presence of twov witnesses.
